The effect of light cannot be overestimated. The most splendid interior will not shine without adequate lighting.

In the last few years, a new school of lamp designers and light manufacturers have taken the lead in creating and developing a new frontier of domestic lighting. These innovative solutions reflect the cutting-edge of contemporary furniture design, interior design, and architecture as much as a recent quantum leap in illumination technology. Many countries around the world have already banned or are in the process of phasing out traditional incandescent light bulbs in favor of more energy-efficient lighting. Because these familiar sources of illumination are becoming extinct, the areas of lighting and light design are currently experiencing significant changes. New technologies such as LEDs and OLEDs are inspiring both designers and manufacturers to develop new forms, functionalities, structures, and constructions.

Lux describes and documents this current evolution in lighting and light design. Norman Bel Geddes Designs America accompanies a landmark exhibition exploring the career of Norman Bel Geddes (1893–1958), one of the 20th century’s foremost theatrical and industrial designers. This companion volume explores Bel Geddes’s life and career in comprehensive detail through nearly 100 projects, ranging from streamlined airplanes, ships, and cars, to stage sets, appliances, and much more. Both the exhibition and the book bring together never-before-seen drawings, models, photographs, and films drawn from the Ransom Center’s Bel Geddes collection. He is perhaps best known for his Futurama display for the General Motors Highways and Horizons exhibit at the New York World’s Fair of 1939–40, which to this day remains a useful model for city planning and design. The exhibition is curated by Donald Albrecht, who contributed the book’s introduction and serves as its editor. In addition to Albrecht, who has written the introduction, twenty scholars have contributed essays.

Philippe Starck is one of the world's most prolific and famous designers. Well known for his luxurious hotels and restaurants, he is equally celebrated for his inspirational reworkings of everyday household items.

Whether it be his iconic lemon squeezer, dubbed the 'Juicy Salif', or his colourful stylized toothbrushes, Starck's works are some of the earliest examples of 'democratic design'. This idea, that exceptional products should not be exclusive and elite, but be accessible and affordable, would eventually revolutionise modern design.

Starck has worked privately for French president Francois Mitterand, decorating a suite in the Palais d'Élysée in Paris in 1982. He has designed products for a number of internationally renowned organisations including Microsoft, Lacie, Eurostar, Alessi and Fossil.

These volumes will introduce in a practical manner the personalities and the works of the world's major designers by way of an historical-critical introduction to the work and life of each individual designer. An accurate selection of the designer's most famous objects arranged in chronological order and a critique of his or her work summarising the most significant reviews published in magazines and newspapers will complete the subject.

Christina Morozzi is the editor of Design magazine and works as a curator of exhibitions in Italy and abroad. She is also a visiting professor at Domus Academy of Milan and University of Art and Design, Lausanne, Switzerland.
