Ikko Tanaka (born in 1930) is one of the established masters of Japanese graphic design. His work draws together influences from East and West, acknowledging the vocabulary of European Modernism while remaining characteristically Japanese. Inspired by sources as diverse as traditional Japanese illustration techniques and his passion for American jazz, he is renowned for numerous cultural posters and programmes for theatre and ballet, many for Kanze Noh Drama.

This work examines Tanaka's entire career, encompassing graphic design and art direction, editorial and interior design. The book is structured into four chapters, each addressing a different aspect of Tanaka's career and a concluding section comprises a critical anthology with contributions from commentators on contemporary graphic design.

Following an introduction by Gian Carlo Calza, the book is structured in four chapters: Japanese Style, Typography, Invitation to Theatre, and Art and Communication Today, each of which addresses a different aspect of Tanaka's momentous career. The concluding section comprises a critical anthology, with contributions from numerous leading commentators on contemporary graphic design, together with an extensive bibliography.

About the Author:

Gian Carlo Calza is Professor of East Asian Art History at the University of Venice and Director of the International Hokusai Research Centre in Milan. He is the author of many books and articles on Japanese art, including Hokusai, also published by Phaidon.

The volume presents a structured path through images in a lively photographic sequence devoted to the various artists who have worked with Bisazza to create the works on display, which have been rigorously handcrafted with refined mosaic tesserae. This varied collection of works, realized by Tord Boontje, Aldo Cibic, Sandro Chia, Jaime Hayon, Arik Levy, Alessandro Mendini, Fabio Novembre, Mimmo Paladino, John Pawson, Andrée Putman, Ettore Sottsass, Studio Job, Patricia Urquiola, Marcel Wanders, and Richard Meier, gives a new voice and expression to the skill shown by Bisazza in rising to the challenge of art. Previously reserved for company production, over 80,000 square feet of exhibition space has been recovered and used for display thanks to the conversion project by the architect Carlo Dal Bianco.

The volume closes with the spaces devoted to the photography of architecture, which host works by authoritative figures from the world of photography.

Ian Phillips is an English-born, Paris-based journalist. He was editor at large for AD Germany for twelve years and has written on interiors, fashion, and the arts for publications such as Architectural Digest, the Wall Street Journal, the Telegraph Magazine (UK), Vogue Living (Australia), and 1stdibs. He has interviewed the likes of Yehudi Menuhin, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Balthus, and Yves Saint Laurent, and is the author of four books. Minimum Design: An indispensable compendium on important designers of the modern era

Tunisian- born designer Tom Dixon's career took off in the 1980s when, as an ex- musician and a self-taught welder, he began working for Italian design giant Cappelini. His iconic 'S' chair design produced for Cappelini, and, later, his 'Jack light' created for his own company, Eurolounge, made him an iconic househood name. Dixon's creative process is unusual in that his ideas originate from the tools and materials he has selected, rather than vice versa, creating unique contemporary objects.

In 1998, Dixon was appointed Head of Design by household furnishing retailer Habitat, later becoming Creative Director until 2009. Each file presents original work by the artists including some made specifically for the festival. The book allows reader feedback by way of device scan-able barcodes which will be used to develop info-graphic artwork later in the year.

The book includes a selection of the sketches that Lanfranco Bombelli drafted, first in Paris and later in Barcelona, for the graphics of the exhibitions in the American Trade Centers in Milan, Stockholm, Paris and Frankfurt, from 1963 to 1978, until they were closed, as a continuation of what the Marshall Plan had been. His artistry in geometrical compositions is based on a minimum of plastic means and inspired by mathematical principles.
