An impeccably researched and inspiring insight into the evolution of jewellery through the ages, explored through exquisite photography of pieces drawn from the V&A’s outstanding collection

Jewels and Jewellery surveys splendid early medieval and Renaissance pieces and superb examples of Arts and Crafts, Art Nouveau and 21st-century jewellery. Exquisitely detailed photography reveals both rare and precious stones as well as the elaborate techniques of the jeweller’s craft such as chasing, enamelling and cameo. Among the ‘star’ pieces are the diamond and sapphire coronet designed by Prince Albert for Queen Victoria, and the Papillon ring by London jeweller G, donated to the Victoria and Albert Museum in 2018 by Beyoncé, alongside a multitude of dazzling rings, brooches, earrings and tiaras.

Clare Phillips considers the history of Western jewellery in three parts, first exploring the materials used by jewellers, then turning to the development of styles in jewellery from the Middle Ages to today, before examining the ways in which jewellery has been hallmarked, distributed and worn over recent centuries. Showcasing pieces by Cartier, Tiffany and Liberty, this beautiful volume is the ultimate guide to the history of Western jewellery.

Contents List:

Stellene Volandes
ID: 14238
Издательство: Rizzoli

The history of the world -- triumphs and tragedies, breakthroughs and breakups -- through the iconic jewels that have inspired and influenced since the dawn of time.

From ancient treasures to royal weddings, great heists to the red carpet, this book is a stunning, surprising, and glittering tour of historic turning points and gem-driven drama, delving into the passions and predilections of some of the world's most interesting and extraordinary people.

Starting in the era of Cleopatra and continuing through to contemporary jewelry statements by Jennifer Lopez, Lady Gaga, and Meghan Markle, Stellene Volandes tells the stories of how shiny stones and precious metals have determined empires, inspired expeditions and great crime, and been the communicator of status and ruin since ancient times. Each moment is placed in historic and relevant context, with Volandes drawing engaging parallels between Napoleon's gift to Marie Louise at the birth of their son and the modern push present or the insouciant story behind the brooch Jackie Kennedy famously wore to a 1962 State Dinner with the Shah of Iran. Illustrated with a mix of archival images and gorgeous photography of the jewels, this book is a beautiful, informative, and essential read for history lovers, fashion, celebrity, and pop-culture followers, as well as passionate jewel hounds.

About the Author:

Stellene Volandes is an internationally renowned expert in jewelry. In addition to writing about jewelry for Town & Country (where she is also editor in chief), she hosts a series at the 92nd Street Y on jewels and their history. Her first book, Jeweler, was published by Rizzoli in 2016.

Part of a well-known book series on contemporary art jewelry by jeweler Nicolas Estrada, this completely new edition of New Earrings (not a single piece from the 2013 edition has been included) highlights the work of some of the most exciting and innovative international jewelry artists working today. The more than 550 pieces featured by 198 jewelers from all over the world break away from the traditional notion of jewelry making to stake out new terrain. They represent a variety of creative approaches and methods, from more traditional to strikingly avant-garde creations, that speak and inspire, embodying all the ingenuity, flair, eloquence, sensitivity and individual freedom of the diverse creators. Some of the earrings are made using unconventional materials like porcelain or plastic while others use classical materials such as gold in ways that provocatively go against the grain of convention, reflecting the artist's personal identity and tastes or containing a subtle commentary on contemporary concerns.

Aimed at students, professionals and jewelry lovers, this second edition of the book published in 2013, has a new layout and concludes with a brief description of the careers and web pages of the featured artists.

Anastasia Young, Paul Wells
ID: 18030
Издательство: Hoaki

A detailed and abundantly-illustrated reference that focuses on the innovative curved score folding for sheet metal techniques to create beautiful, dynamic three-dimensional forms, much like metal origami, in jewellery and metalsmithing.

Anastasia Young and Paul Wells, both renowned London-based jewellers, authors and lecturers, have created a practical visual handbook on curved scoring and folding techniques applied to jewellery and metalsmithing for small objects. The book’s clear, hands-on approach, with explanatory photographs for each step, makes it an invaluable resource. Readers will discover a variety of ways to score and fold metal and give it different finishes, shaping flat sheets into to visually organic forms, including guides on the tools needed for each method. A final section contains useful resources, from a detailed analysis of score depth based on the gauge of the wire used to information about where to source materials and facts about metalworking and jewellery in general.

About the Authors:

Anastasia Young is a London-based jewelry artist, author and lecturer whose work has been exhibited internationally. Young's eclectic jewelry is often project-based and driven by a combination of ideas and technical investigation; she uses narrative to explore both the design of a piece and its display when not being worn. Examples of her work are held in the permanent collections of the Science Museum, London and Central Saint Martins Museum. Young is a graduate of the Royal College of Art and Central Saint Martins, where she lectures and teaches short courses in jewelry making. Having written three technical jewellery books (Thames & Hudson, A&C Black) which have been translated into seven languages, Young is well known as an educator and through her teaching and writing. In 2017, Anastasia was appointed to the board of the Association for Contemporary Jewellery, and is also the Technical Features Editor of its biannual magazine, Findings.

Paul Wells is an award-winning London-based silversmith and jeweller, renowned for his use of direct metalworking techniques. Wells' silverware makes innovative use of fold-forming and he has developed a method of creating curved scores which can be used to fold sheet metal in a visually stunning and unique style. His technique has been recognized by Goldsmiths' Crafts and Design Council with two Gold Awards for Technological Innovation. Wells' exploration of this technique has led to the production of intrinsically organic silver forms which almost appear to have grown themselves into existence, creating confounding biomorphic designs that are both functional and decorative. Having taught at several London colleges for two decades, Paul Wells is a respected educator and keen advocate of fold-forming, and has contributed to many books published by Quarto, Thames & Hudson and A&C Black.
