Gathered around the fire, source of life, protected from the elements by ice and animal skins, the peoples of the great north bring pleasure into their bleak existence by using what meagre sustenance they find in nature. Tales and histories inspire the imagination of these peoples during the long winter evenings, giving rise to a little-known culture, that of men for whom day is often night. The distinctive identity passed on to us so vividly by the peoples of the great north is gradually disappearing, particularly in the mad rush to colonize northern Siberia and in the frenzied search for wealth beneath the earth.

The introduction of the Porsche 901 in 1963 marked a milestone in automotive history. Although the name later had to be changed because Peugeot had patented having a 0 in the middle of car model numbers, the 911 didn’t let anything stand in the way of its becoming an iconic sports car. This success story spans all the way from the 901 and the Carrera RS 2.7 (which with its characteristic rear spoiler ― the so-called “ducktail” ― was the fastest production car of its time) right up to the current generation of the 991. The famous automotive photographer René Staud showcases the most important models ― all in his typically radiant and distinctive style.

Ansel Adams
ID: 2124
Издательство: Bulfinch Press

From 1948 to 1976 Ansel Adams produced seven portfolios, each a limited edition of 10 to 15 signed photographic prints. This book reproduces all 90 of these superb images, including many of Adams's most famous monumental landscape photographs and some remarkable, less familiar portraits and architectural studies. The Portfolios of Ansel Adams was first published in 1977. In 1981 it was decided to take advantage of new printing technology and also to have the book redesigned. In this new printing, the typography from the introductory texts of the original portfolios was faithfully reproduced. In addition, new laser-scanned separations were made of all the images to guarantee the best possible reproduction of the photographs. In his eloquent introduction, John Szarkowski observes that of all Adams publications, his portfolios most clearly represent his personal view of the meaning of his work.

A graphic exploration of the origin of hardcore

Long, long ago, in the year 1965, there was no explicit pornography. There was the odd grainy stag film, the occasional French postcard, the rare Cuban chapbook or homemade Polaroid, but the glossy professional color pornography ubiquitous to modern society did not exist. The man who changed all that was Berth Milton of Stockholm, with his audacious little digest, Private. He and Private were directly responsible for Swedish Parliament's decision to treat sexually explicit materials as protected free speech, leading to the abolition of obscenity laws over most of northern Europe. With its smiling, exuberantly uninhibited models, Private created a fantasy of Sweden as the most liberated country on earth, a sexual wonderland that enchanted men around the globe. Publisher Milton was the magazine's sole photographer, so the Private paradise was very much his personal dream. Genius and tyrant, he insisted on only the best for his magazine, rising in the 1970s to become the Hugh Hefner of Hardcore.

This five-volume, 960-page mini-boxed set presents the best of Private from 1970 to 1979. Each 192-page book features seven to ten of the best photo sets, arranged in chronological order, produced from the original color transparencies. Also included are photos never seen in the magazine, plus behind-the-scenes photos of Milton at work and all of the magazine covers. Vintage art, ads, and editorials complete this fascinating look at the birth of pornography and the infamous Swedish Sin.

Motorcycles as motorcycles are meant to be: radical, stylish, subversive, raw. The Ride 2nd Gear continues to present the latest custom bikes and the best builders on the planet.

Men and motorcycles: a story that has vacillated somewhere between cult and cliché for years. Custom bikes, in particular, have a history that is deeply rooted in the spirit of freedom and change of the 1960s, as well as man’s primal urge to build something with his own hands — or, in this case, tools. The Ride 2nd Gear is a showcase of the power and beauty of these bikes.

The Ride 2nd Gear presents a stunning selection of recent custom motorcycles, as well as the small, local workshops around the globe in which they are built. Hotbeds of creativity and craftsmanship, these workshops are mostly run by single individuals and attract a small yet devoted community of fans and fellow builders.

The custom bike community as a whole is united by its passion for the ride — one so strong that it is now attracting a younger generation. Whether alone or in a group of like-minded friends, in a city or in the countryside, just for the weekend or embarking on a long-distance road trip, these drivers are actively sharing and celebrating pure riding pleasure on their own unique motorcycles that are lovingly crafted with time, dedication, and technical expertise.

From limited series to one-offs, The Ride 2nd Gear features the brilliant results of this process. Its pages are filled with bikes that offer extraordinary design and driving experiences. In fact, established brands are now acting on trends set by the custom scene whose bikes are often more radical and sophisticated because more attention can be paid to detail and each new idea can be fine-tuned to perfection.

Some models shown in The Ride 2nd Gear stem from or are based on classic bobbers and choppers, Italian-style racing machines, plastic Japanese motorcycles, and rare BMWs or Triumphs, which may very well be up to 80 years old. Others are art bikes made for show or futuristic visions inspired by the aesthetics of science fiction, fantasy, or anime. But whether they preserve or radically expand on traditional craftsmanship, these custom machines are more agile, faster, and therefore more fun than anything produced in the past.

Journalist and custom motorcycle expert Chris Hunter co-edited both this book and our previous release The Ride. Born in England, Hunter now lives with his family in New Zealand, where he runs the motorcycle website Bike EXIF. It is now the world’s most popular showcase of custom bikes with millions of pageviews every month and a passionate global following.

The motorcycle is back! The Ride is about custom motorcycles as motorcycles are meant to be and the people who build and drive them.

The motorcycle is back! Similar to the fresh contemporary scene that has established itself around bicycles in the last few years, the motorcycle is currently undergoing an aesthetic rebirth. A young subculture worldwide is discovering the motorcycle as an expression of its personality and creativity.

The Ride explores motorcycle riding as it is meant to be: as a means of getting around with attitude, as an extension of one’s own body, as an expression of personal freedom, but also as a significant challenge to technical expertise, craftsmanship, physics, discipline, and driving skill.

In the motorcycle scene of 1960s Britain, it was frowned upon to drive a motorcycle as it was produced in a factory. Following in this historical tradition, The Ride focuses on those who are creating customized motorcycles that come as close to one’s own vision of how pure riding should be as possible. For example, the creative young people who are buying old, wrecked bikes on eBay, removing everything but the motor and frame, and then rebuilding them in ways that are as radical and subversively creative as they are knowledgeable and respectful of tradition.

The archetypes of the new motorcycles created in this way — classic board racers, bobbers, café racers, and choppers — may very well be 30-50 or even 80 years old, but what is made out of them is new, not retro. Decked out with state-of-the-art disk brakes, LED lights, gears, and drive components, these machines are more agile, faster, more radical, and therefore more fun than anything produced in the past.

The Ride features transformations such as a boring plastic motorcycle made in Japan in the 1990s turned into a slick café racer with an Italian feel, a soulless neo-baroque machine turned into an in-your-face scrambler, or an old find from grandpa’s barn turned into an absolutely comfort-free hardtail with the coolest of sounds.

The book also presents small, local custom motorcycle workshops from around the globe that have established themselves with sought-after products that inspire other builders worldwide. It features extensive profiles of pioneers including Walt Siegl, Wrenchmonkees, DP Customs, Deus, Shinya Kimura, and Uwe Ehinger and their very different ideas of how a motorcycle should be. The unique bikes created in their garages — sometimes made-to-order, sometimes in a limited series — are often technically superior, better thought-out, and simply more radical than those produced by larger manufacturers who need to appeal to a broader audience.

The spirit of this young motorcycle scene is reminiscent of that of current bike frame builders or even today’s new food subculture. It’s about making, transforming, or designing something with your own hands. In this case, something that will get a person from A to B, that makes noise, smells, vibrates, and comes to life. What could be more exciting, more analog, and more satisfying?

About the Guest Editor:
After a twenty-year career as a creative director, Chris Hunter quit the advertising industry to run the motorcycle website Bike EXIF. It's now the world's most popular showcase of custom bikes, with millions of pageviews every month and a passionate global following. Hunter has traded the bright lights of London and Sydney for the solitude of rural New Zealand, where the lack of decent broadband is made up for by magnificent riding roads.

Jonathan Sanders, Heidi Hollinger

Heidi Hollinger, in a photographic tour-de-force, has captured the spirit of the Russian people as they adjust to their new freedoms. Her sympathetic portraits reveal how some "emerging" Russians relish their new opportunities while others, rooted in the past, struggle to survive in their changing world. The wide-ranging collection in this sumptuous volume includes images of workers, entertainers, artists, military officers, religious leaders, cosmonauts, Stalins great-grandson, and Lenins niece, among others. Accompanying the portraits is a fascinating text by Jonathan Sanders, who provides insight about the people of modern Russia and Hollingers importance in documenting them during this intriguing, troubled era.

For nearly a decade, Hollinger has lived in Russia, at first as a visitor and gradually as an insider, gaining access to such high-profile politicians as Mikhail Gorbachev and Vladimir Putin, as well as other top-echelon personalities. At the same time she explored Moscows lower depths: mounted on in-line skates and armed with mace, she invited typical Russians to her studio to pose for a portrait. Her "working folk" images are in the tradition of pre-Revolutionary masters, who also wandered through the streets in search of representative faces to photograph.

Heidi Hollinger, who was born in Montreal and lives in Moscow and Montreal, contributes her work to leading publications, including Newsweek, Time, Esquire, and The New York Times Magazine. Her photographic books have been published in Canada and Russia. Over the last decade she had more than thirty one-woman shows across the world from Omsk, Siberia to Los Angeles. Her photographic books have been published in Canada and Russia. Her photographic books have been published in Canada and Russia. Jonathan Sanders is a well-known historian and veteran CBS News Moscow correspondent. He served as Ferris Professor of Journalism at Princeton University and taught courses in Soviet and Russian history and television at Columbia University. Made in India. The Sartorialist’s portrait of the country’s unique style and beauty

Scott Schuman, a.k.a. The Sartorialist, has been travelling to India for over a decade to capture its wildly original beauty in markets, music festivals, city streets, and cricket fields, and across cities like Delhi, Jaipur, Chennai, and Mumbai. The result gathers all the unique qualities that have brought him worldwide renown: a photojournalist’s eye, a humanist’s empathy, and a fashion aficionado’s appreciation for design.

An intoxicating mix of colour, pattern, and texture, The Sartorialist: India is a photographic tribute to the country’s diversity and splendour. Famed American photographer and blogger Scott Schuman journeyed to India many times to capture its wildly idiosyncratic styles, whether on the streets, in markets, on the cricket fields, or at residences in cities like Delhi, Jaipur, Pushkar, and Mumbai.

Schuman’s affinity for his subjects is evident, and he celebrates people of all ages and from all walks of life, from ravers, transgender subjects, wrestlers, surfers, grandfathers, and fashionistas to children and labourers. He also shines a light on the new India as much as on the time-honoured. The casually chic layering of textiles, the enduring prevalence of traditional attire, and India’s pure physical beauty all add up to a richly satisfying visual and cultural experience. The images are also illuminated by an introduction by the acclaimed fashion writer Bandana Tewari.

This vibrant monograph is Schuman’s first for TASCHEN, and it showcases all the unique qualities that have brought him worldwide renown: a photojournalist’s eye for a decisive moment, a humanist’s sense of empathy, and a fashion aficionado’s appreciation for design.

The photographer:

Based in New York City, Scott Schuman had worked in fashion marketing and branding when, in the early 2000s, he began casually photographing stylish people he encountered on the street and posting the images to a blog he called The Sartorialist. Schuman quickly garnered an avid following, and went on to shoot campaigns for Gap, Verizon, Nespresso, DKNY Jeans, Absolut, and Burberry. His work resides in the permanent collections of the Victoria & Albert Museum and the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography.

The author:

Bandana Tewari is former fashion features editor and is now editor at large at Vogue India. She has contributed to numerous publications including Elle and Marie Claire and writes a column for The Business of Fashion.
