Anna Sparham, Robin Muir The National Trust
ID: 17380
Издательство: National Trust Books

Spanning the history of photography from the 1840s to the present day, this beautifully illustrated book showcases 100 photographs chosen from the many thousands held in the National Trust's collections.

Spanning the history of photography from the 1840s to the present day, this beautifully illustrated book showcases 100 photographs chosen from the many thousands held in collections at National Trust properties across England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Alongside works by well-known photographers such as William Henry Fox Talbot, Julia Margaret Cameron, Camille Silvy, Edward Chambré Hardman, Dorothy Wilding, Angus McBean and Jane Bown are remarkable images captured by less familiar practitioners. Many of these photographs have only recently been discovered and are reproduced here for the first time.

Professional studio portraits, landscapes and images of war sit alongside family groups, domestic scenes and travel photographs by talented amateurs whose images provide glimpses into the way we have viewed and recorded the world over the last two centuries. Through these pages, glassplate negatives give way to celluloid film; monochrome makes room for colour; and while still inspiring many, early cumbersome processes evolve into modern, portable formats that would bring photographic creativity within easier reach of everyone.

The book concludes with a useful illustrated glossary of photographic terms and a gazetteer of National Trust properties with significant photographic collections.

About the Author:

Anna Sparham is National Curator for Photography at the National Trust. Since 2001, she has worked extensively with historic collections of photographs and contemporary photographic practice across the arts and heritage sector. She was formerly Curator of Photographs at the Museum of London, publishing widely and curating several exhibitions on subjects including women's suffrage, youth culture and London at night. Her interests include 20thcentury portraiture, the natural landscape, and analogue and alternative processes.

Robin Muir is a writer and curator, specialising in photography. He is currently a Contributing Editor at British Vogue and consultant to its archive. He has curated major exhibitions at the National Portrait Gallery, the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Museum of London and the Yale Center for British Art. His many publications include The World's Most Photographed, Cecil Beaton's Bright Young Things, monographs on David Bailey, John Deakin, Terence Donovan, Norman Parkinson and Snowdon, and several books on the history of Vogue magazine, including Vogue 100: A Century of Style and most recently The Crown in Vogue.

Celebrate That Special Bond Between Men and Cars, and the Stories That Connect Them

Discover actor and director Ed Burns talking about his 1969 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme, a model he’d been dreaming about since his days pumping gas. NBA legend Shaquille O’Neal, whose favorite cars are trucks — he loves the wow factor of an International CV Series 6.6. Or Jay Leno on his 1955 Buick Roadmaster, big enough for him to sleep in while trying to make it as a comic. Filled with stunning photographs of the whole cars and of the exquisite details that make car lovers’ hearts beat just a little faster, as well as more than 80 personal stories, it’s a joy for every reader who knows that a car is never just a car.

Man-about-town and NYC men's style fixture Matt Hranek is back with his second book, A Man & His Car.

Here is a beautiful homage to an object of men's obsession, told in firsthand and original interviews. Jay Leno, a major car collector and the host of Jay Leno's Garage, shares the story of his oldest car, a 1955 Buick Roadmaster that he bought for $350, which he literally slept in before getting his break in L.A. Kevin Costner reveals that he got so attached to the iconic Shelby Mustang he drove in the movie Bull Durham, he bought it for his own personal collection. Franz von Holzhausen, chief designer at Tesla, who worked hand in hand with Elon Musk to design the Tesla Model S prototype, says that his love of cars started when he was two (as evidenced by a picture of him sitting in a high chair drawing a car). And as for Snoop Dogg and his 1965 Cadillac "Snoop DeVille" convertible -- do we even need to explain?

A Man & His Car includes visits to some of the most exclusive collections in the world -- from that of the Petersen Automotive Museum to those of car manufacturers from Fiat to Ford -- giving us access to Steve McQueen's favorite car, a 1956 Jaguar XKSS; the 1971 DeTomaso Pantera that Elvis purchased for his then-girlfriend Linda Thompson (and which has two bullet holes in the steering wheel and one in the driver's-side floorpan from when, after an altercation with Thompson, Presley fired three rounds into the interior when the car wouldn't start); and a super-rare, 24-karat-gold-plated 1980 DeLorean DMC-12, a model that was sold exclusively to American Express Gold Card members through the 1980 American Express catalog, for an astronomical $85,000 (equivalent to more than $250,000 today). Exquisite photos of each car accompany each story, and since cars naturally hold more detail than watches, there will be more photos in this book -- of the cars head-on, of their hood ornaments and wheels, and of course full-body shots. With Hranek's storytelling, the cars become more than just vehicles for transportation and status symbols; they represent pop-culture moments, pioneering achievements, heirlooms, friendships, and more.

About the Author:

Matt Hranek is an author, photographer, director, and the founder/editor of the men's lifestyle magazine WM Brown. He is reasonably obsessed with cars, watches, bespoke tailoring, and well-crafted things. Originally from Binghamton, New York -- not too far from his Wm Brown Farm in upstate New York -- Matt currently lives in Brooklyn and can occasionally be found in old-school hotel bars throughout Europe, Negroni firmly in hand. Find him on Instagram at @wmbrownproject.

Matt Hranek was the author behind the wildly successful book A Man & His Watchthis book explores another relationship between men and an inanimate object: the car.

Published with the same care as his previous title, with the book nestled inside a slipcase this is a book for those “who know that a car is never just a car”.

Charles Fréger, Sumedha Sah, Anuradha Roy, Catherine Clément, Kuhu Kopariha
ID: 17025
Издательство: Thames & Hudson

A festival of Indian folk rituals and costumes bursting with colour, captured by renowned photographer Charles Fréger, the creator of a distinctive and powerful new genre of portrait photography.

Internationally renowned photographer Charles Fréger continues to explore global traditions and cultures, by celebrating the powerful visual aspects of Indian folk culture and religious ritual. India is the home to a myriad of local traditions, legends and religions, each with their own festivals, rites and rituals. Celebrations burst with vivid colours and often wildly exuberant costumes, some representing gods and goddesses, others legendary heroes from Sanskrit epics such as the Mahabharata and the Ramayana.

In Charles Fréger’s photographs, those who honour local cultural traditions are represented in single or group portraits, represented against carefully chosen landscapes and backdrops, from the heart of festivals and celebrations. Fréger’s unmistakable style of portraiture allows us to admire the complexity of their adornments – masks and headdresses, costumes and body paint – and to consider the abundance of imagination that expresses India’s countless stories and characters, both human and divine.

This spectacular gathering of warrior figures, deities, musicians, tigers, mahouts, epic characters and their avatars is accompanied by texts setting the huge variety of eclectic costumes in context, and describing the local festivals and rituals. This compelling sequence of new portraits will enthral those with an interest in folk traditions, as well as the followers of this internationally acclaimed photographer.

About the Authors:

Charles Fréger is a photographer based in Rouen, France. Internationally acclaimed for his subtle and poetic portraiture, he has devoted himself to the representation of social groups. Previous books include Portraits in Lace: Breton Women (2015), Yokainoshima: Island of Monsters (2016) and Cimarron: Freedom and Masquerade (2019), all published by Thames & Hudson. Anuradha Roy is a novelist and journalist living in northeast India. Catherine Clément is a philosopher, critic and feminist.

Olga Sviblova, Varvara Rodchenko
ID: 11291
Издательство: Skira

A leading representative of the Russian avant-garde, Alexander Rodchenko (1891–1956) revolutionized the world of graphic art, design and photography.

The over 250 illustrations featured in this volume allow the reader to grasp the full force of this innovator and to appreciate the charisma he exerted on fellow artists as much as on the men of letters, directors and intellectuals who shared his path.
Whether it is the photomontages he created for Vladimir Mayakovsky’s poem Pro Eto (About That), the covers designed for the magazine Novy LEF (New LEF) – a veritable point of reference for the revolutionary intelligentsia – or cinema posters and book illustrations, Rodchenko’s works bear witness to his many collaborations and friendships, evoking not just the image of a brilliantly creative personality but a unique phase in twentieth-century history.

The remarkable photographic portraits by the artist, his pictures of urban landscapes and architectures, as well as his photo-reportages in factories and building sites bring back both the faces and spirit of an age of great hopes and equally great contradictions. To this day, the style of Rodchenko the photographer, marked by unusual perspectives, sharp angles and diagonals, stands as the purest witness not just to the talent of an artist but to his eagerness to modernise art and the world at large.

Complementing the volume are contributions by Olga Sviblova, the director of the House of Photography / Multimedia Art Museum of Moscow, by the grandson of the artist and leading scholar of his work Alexander Lavrentiev, in addition to writings and testimonies by Rodchenko himself and his daughter Varvara.

The definitive story of Amy Winehouse’s life and career told through key photographs, memorabilia and recollections by those who knew her best. Curated by Amy’s stylist and close friend Naomi Parry.

Amy Winehouse left an indelible mark on both the music industry and pop culture with her soulful voice and bold 60s-inspired aesthetic. Instant Andy. Before there was Instagram, there was Warhol

Created in collaboration with the Andy Warhol Foundation, this book reveals hundreds of instant pictures by the artist. From self-portraits to still lives, anonymous nudes to New York high society, from Cabbage Patch dolls to Dolly Parton, Keith Haring to Audrey Hepburn, these impromptu images offer a unique record of the Pop Art maestro’s world.

Andy Warhol was a relentless chronicler of life and its encounters. Carrying a Polaroid camera from the late 1950s until his death in 1987, he amassed a huge collection of instant pictures of friends, lovers, patrons, the famous, the obscure, the scenic, the fashionable, and himself. Created in collaboration with the Andy Warhol Foundation, this book features hundreds of these instant photos.

Portraits of celebrities such as Mick Jagger, Alfred Hitchcock, Jack Nicholson, Yves Saint Laurent, Pelé, Debbie Harry are included alongside images of Warhol’s entourage and high life, landscapes, and still lifes from Cabbage Patch dolls to the iconic soup cans. Often raw and impromptu, the Polaroids document Warhol’s era like Instagram captures our own, offering a unique record of the life, world, and vision behind the Pop Art maestro and modernist giant.
