What does migration mean for those, who stay behind?

Louise Amelie's documentary photo series is an artistic exploration of the global phenomenon of migration and its many facets, which are often ignored in European migration politics. Migration has always been an integral part of human experience and will continue to be. Yet in public discourse it is presented as an aberration, while the existence of nation-state borders is hardly ever questioned. On the globe, Kyrgyzstan nestles inconspicuously next to Kazakhstan and China, but on the ground the vastness and heights of the mountains seem endless. In contrast to the natural beauty, prefabricated housing estates spring up in the capital, Bishkek. Here lives a young population that, despite all the adversities of post-Soviet reality, faces the world with great confidence. In a collection of portraying texts and photographs that foreground the individual stories, the book is an expression of solidarity and empathy, and shows that migration can mean both an opportunity as well as the painful loss of a beloved Missing Member.

About the Author:

The artistic focus of director and photographer Louise Amelie (*1991, Berlin) is on documentary and street photography. Her series, shot in the USA between 2016 and 2020, have been exhibited internationally and have been awarded the German Photo Book Prize and the Belfast Photo Festival. Since 2021, she has been exploring the theme of post-Soviet identity and migration in Central Asia, spending two and a half months in Kyrgyzstan for this project.

Magnum Magnum showcases the best of Magnum Photos, celebrating the vision, imagination and brilliance of its photographers – from the acknowledged 20th-century greats to the modern masters and rising stars of our time

Since its founding in 1947 by Robert Capa, Henri Cartier-Bresson, George Rodger and David ‘Chim’ Seymour, Magnum Photos - the legendary co-operative - has powerfully chronicled the peoples, cultures, events and issues of the time. Now, following its 75th anniversary, Magnum Photos and Thames & Hudson join forces to publish an updated and expanded edition of the original hit publication Magnum Magnum (2007), which was previously presented in three formats and sold over 200,000 copies worldwide.

Organized by photographer, Magnum Magnum is built upon a founding concept that made Magnum such a unique creative environment; a collaborative process where each of the four founders picture edited the other’s photographs. This book evokes the same creative spirit, with each photographer selecting and critiquing six key works by another of the agency’s 87 photographers along with a commentary explaining the rationale behind their choices.

This new edition adds the 25 photographers who have joined Magnum in the last 15 years. With more than 150 new photographs and over 700 pages, this book is the definition of an updated classic.

About the Authors:

Brigitte Lardinois is a Reader in Understanding of Public Photography at the London College of Communication, University of the Arts London. Lardinois’ association with Magnum began in 1995 when she set up the Cultural Department of their agency in London. She has been involved in group exhibitions as well as solo shows – working closely with Henri Cartier-Bresson, Martin Parr, Josef Koudelka, Eve Arnold, Elliott Erwitt and many others.

Clément Chéroux, Clara Bouveresse
ID: 11475
Издательство: Thames & Hudson

The official publication celebrating Magnum Photos’ 70th anniversary: a totally fresh and perceptive view of the legendary agency’s history and archive

This landmark book celebrates the 70th anniversary of the world’s greatest photographic agency, Magnum Photos. Offering a fresh and insightful view of the agency’s history and archive, it takes an analytical look at the work of Magnum’s photographers, and provides an understanding of what it is that makes Magnum Photos so different, so special and so great.

Author and curator Clément Chéroux, together with Clara Bouveresse, demonstrates how Magnum Photos owes its pre-eminence to the ability of its photographers to encompass and navigate the points between photography as art object and photography as documentary evidence. A Magnum photograph can be expressive and bear witness at the same time.

The book is organized into three main parts: Part I (1947–1968) views the Magnum archive through a humanist lens, focusing on post-war ideals of commonality and utopianism. Part II (1969–1989) shows a world fragmenting, with a focus on subcultures, minorities and outsiders. Part III (1990–2017) charts the ways in which Magnum photographers have captured – and continue to capture – a world in flux and under threat.

Featuring both group and individual projects, the book includes magazine spreads, newspaper articles, excerpts from books, and other valuable material, putting some of the world’s most recognizable images in creative context. Complete with extensive texts, an anthology of correspondence and an agency timeline, Magnum Manifesto is an expertly curated, essential collection of images and commentary for anyone seeking the very best in photography.

Contents List:

Preface: May 22, 1947 • Part I, 1947–1968: Human Rights and Wrongs • Part II, 1969–1989: An Inventory of Differences • Part III, 1990–2017: Stories About Endings • Epilogue: 'Magnum Is…'

About the Authors:

Clément Chéroux is senior curator of photography at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. He was formerly head curator of photography at the Centre Pompidou, Paris.

Sandro Miller
ID: 13593
Издательство: Skira

John Malkovich and Sandro Miller pay homage to the icons of photography that have changed our collective imagination.

Meryl Streep is a myth, even without the celebrated portrait taken by Annie Leibovitz in 1981, and another myth – John Malkovich – pays heartfelt homage to her talent, with the complicity of Sandro Miller in a project designed to bring to life the works of master photographers that have changed our collective imagination. In this original project, photographer Sandro Miller uses the celebrated American actor to recreate some of the most famous portraits of all time. Malkovich Malkovich Malkovich! is a sort of magic formula with no need for Photoshop, relying simply on the actor’s chameleon-like talent to open the doors of our imagination.

Thanks to meticulous make-up sessions, costumes and sets, coming after months of research, Malkovich becomes Albert Einstein sticking his tongue out at Arthur Sasse (1951), Che Guevara as captured by Alberto Korda (1960), Hitchcock, the master of suspense, as portrayed ironically by Albert Watson, and Jack Nicholson behind the mask of the Joker by Herb Ritts (1988). Miller’s impressive talent for lighting and editing takes care of all the rest. Establishing a profound connection with the subjects and authors, styles and artistic languages, Malkovich represents Robert Mapplethorpe’s transgressive Self and animates Andres Serrano’s plastic crucifix (1987), Andy Warhol’s pop art and the fragrance of Jean Paul Gaultier’s vibrant spirit immortalized by Pierre et Gilles (1990). With a fur wrapped around his head, Malkovich becomes Mick Jagger as depicted by David Bailey (1964) and even transforms, naked and covered with bees, into Richard Avedon’s famous Beekeeper. The same versatility allows him to embrace his Yoko Ono, lying beside her nude like John Lennon before Annie Leibovitz’s camera in the award-winning shot taken only a few hours before he was murdered.

About the Author:

Sandro Miller (1958) is considered one of the world’s foremost advertising photographers. He is known for his expressive images and his close collaboration with the actor John Malkovich and other members of the Steppenwolf Theater Company of Chicago.

ID: 16113
Издательство: Rizzoli

Celebrated Italian photographer Marco Anelli captures the construction of Magazzino Italian Art, a new Hudson Valley institution dedicated to postwar and contemporary Italian art.

The transformation and expansion of a 1960s factory building in Cold Spring, NY to house an extraordinary art collection has been documented by Marco Anelli, Magazzino Italian Art’s first artist in residence. From initial excavations to the installation of artworks in the galleries, Anelli traces Spanish architect Miguel Quismondo’s plan to create a space that bridges the artistic legacy of the Hudson Valley with the demands of ambitious contemporary artworks. Several essays and examples of founders Nancy Olnick and Giorgio Spanu’s stunning Italian art collection enliven Anelli’s series of landscape photographs and portraits.

For its 100th anniversary, the construction company Holcim has commissioned a unique artistic memento. Star photographer Marco Grob along with the artistic duo of hiepler, brunier, were invited to photograph the company's workers and its workplaces. The result is a stunning homage to 80,000 employees in 70 countries. With his sensitive yet direct portraits, Marco Grob captures the face of the company. His images provide an engaging contrast to the abstract beauty of hiepler, brunier,'s architectural studies of Holcim's workplaces. The resulting series of black-and-white photography has great resonance and pays fitting tribute to the New Objective tradition of August Sander and Albert Renger-Patzsch.

Author Marella Agnelli and Marella Caracciolo Chia
ID: 16003
Издательство: Rizzoli

The exclusive world of one of the twentieth century’s most glamorous and alluring women, as seen through her private homes and gardens. Nicknamed "The Swan" by Richard Avedon when he photographed her iconic portrait in 1953, Marella Agnelli is not only one of the great beauties of the last century, but also the most elegant and cultured of that exclusive club.

Born the Neapolitan princess Marella Caracciolo di Castagneto, she became Marella Agnelli with her marriage to Gianni Agnelli, the Fiat industrialist. However, her innate style dates back to her New York internship with photographer Erwin Blumenfeld, and she was a Vogue contributor in the 1950s and ’60s as well as appearing in its pages. One of the most photographed women of the jet-set society, she was captured by Avedon as well as Irving Penn, Henry Clarke, Horst, and Robert Doisneau, among others. Agnelli collaborated with the best artists and designers of her day, with her many residences as their palette. From Italian interior design legend Renzo Mongiardino — who worked on her New York apartment alongside a young Peter Marino — to Gae Aulenti, the important Italian architect, who built her homes in Turin and Marrakech, Agnelli created a series of extraordinary houses and gardens, full of timeless elegance, invaluable art, and groundbreaking decorating ideas. With ten residences spread throughout Turin, Rome, Milan, New York, St. Moritz, and Marrakech, ranging from regally classic villas to ultramodern apartments, her impeccable taste shines through in these gorgeous interiors and gardens.

One of the famous modern fairy tales of love, glamour, and heartbreak, Marella Agnelli has become an icon of our times.

About the Author:

Marella Caracciolo Chia is a respected design journalist for Architectural Digest, the New York Times T Magazine, among other prestigious publications.

Masako Toda
ID: 15900
Издательство: Prestel

Published for the first time in book form, this startling and intimate collection of late images by the great twentieth-century Japanese photographer comprises the series Private Scenes and Letters from Journeys.

One of the most important Japanese photographers of the last century, Masahisa Fukase was known for exploring themes of isolation, lonliness, and melancholy and for his transgressive and intimate approach to the medium. This volume includes two of his last and arguably most personal series. Private Scenes features photographs taken over the course of the year 1989 in different locations around the world and in which he is both subject and photographer. He then painted over the prints with colored washes to create an entirely new piece. For this same series, he later photographed scenes from daily life, this time in Tokyo, changing camera and adding the date on his photographs, but still representing himself in the images. This volume reproduces for the first time in book form all of the photographs that make up both original series. It charts a turning point in Fukase’s work — an artist grappling with his medium and with a compulsion to share his personal experiences with his audience. The photographs are accompanied by a text by Masako Toda, who offers a contextual and historical consideration of Fukase’s œuvre.

About the Author:

Masako Toda is a photo historian, author, and curator of Japanese photography. She holds a masters from The University of Tokyo. Toda is a lecturer at Musashino Art University, Tokyo College of Photography, among others. In 2006, she was awarded the incentive award by the Japan Society for Arts and History of Photography. Toda's field of expertise is the history of modernism as well as postwar Japanese photography.

Richard Garvey-Williams
ID: 17027
Издательство: Ammonite

What makes a great photo? Flicking through the pages of most popular photography magazines you might get the impression that there’s only one rule of importance – ‘the rule of thirds’. Indeed it appears that some will judge the merit of a photograph based almost solely on this. Rarely do you hear discussion about ‘visual weight’, ‘balance’, ‘negative space’, ‘depth’ and so on. Author and professional photographer Richard Garvey-Williams argues that success lies in a combination of four elements: an impactful subject; dynamic composition; effective use of lighting; and, perhaps the most crucial, ability to invoke an emotional response in the viewer.

In clear, concise and jargon-free text he also considers the role of tone and colour in good composition, and offers invaluable tips and the tools to help the photographer take control of the creative process. The book is illustrated with examples of the author’s own beautiful nature photography, along with diagrams and notation to explain techniques most clearly. A final chapter in this definitive guide for all serious photographers discusses photography and its relationship to art before offering a considered conclusion to the exploration of this fascinating topic.

About the Author:

Richard Garvey-Williams was fortunate to have spent much of his up-bringing in East Africa and naturally developed a love for the wildlife that was so abundant at that time. On leaving school he obtained a degree in Zoology from Manchester University, but it was only later that his passion for the natural world was re-kindled, largely by linking it to his other love, photography. Richard and his wife Lisa spent eight years living in the southern part of Greece in an area blessed with some wonderful mountain scenery and deep gorges. This, in combination with the changes that occurred through the seasons and the wonderful light quality, provided excellent opportunities for him to hone his landscape photography skills. In addition to exhibiting prints and publishing his work, Richard regularly leads photographic safaris and landscape photography workshop holidays abroad, in addition to workshops and tutorials to individuals and small groups at his South Devon home.
