A vast expanse of a country, more than double the size of Germany, with a population density of just three people per square kilometers, and an incredible diversity of fauna — even in the most extreme environments.

With a booming economy and stable democracy, things are going well in Namibia. Tourism plays a huge role in the country, with some 1.5 million travellers visiting each year to explore and enjoy the country’s phenomenal landscapes, wildlife, natural history, and its immense sense of space. This breathtaking Namibia book by New York Times-acclaimed photographer Michael Poliza captures some of the country’s most spectacular scenery, from the highest star dunes in the world around Sossusvlei to the NamibRand Nature Reserve, the Namib Desert, and the granite peaks of the Spitzkoppe. Life always shows Michael Poliza new paths: from actor to entrepreneur, from professional photographer to travel designer. After a career in the IT and Internet industries, Poliza started a three-year multimedia expedition on a ship around the world. In 2002, he settled in Cape Town, traveled the African plains and quickly became a world renowned wildlife and landscape photographer. The New York Times said of his work that “it could change the way you think about photography.” Captivated by the beauty of his work, friends of Poliza begin to ask if they can accompany him on his expeditions, and in 2011, he founded the company MICHAEL POLIZA PRIVATE TRAVEL, which tailors very special adventure trips to the most beautiful and untouched places.

Gunter Kast is a freelance journalist. He lives southwest of Munich in Herrsching am Ammersee. He has reported from approximately 90 countries around the world (and counting), with bylines in the German daily papers Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung and Süddeutsche Zeitung, among others. He is especially taken with Africa. Other than the nearly uninhabited open spaces, what fascinates him most about Namibia is the fact that the wildlife in the nature preserves in the northwest is able to roam freely, unhindered by fences.

This is an expanded and updated version of Nan Goldin’s seminal book The Other Side, originally published in 1993. There will be a revised introduction by Goldin, and for the first time the voices of those whose stories are represented. Now being released at a time when the discourse around gender and sexual orientation is evolving, The Other Side traces some of the history that informs this new visibility.

The first photographs in the book are from the 1970s, when Goldin lived in Boston with a group of drag queens and documented their glamour and vulnerability. In the early eighties, Goldin chronicled the lives of transgender friends in New York when AIDS began to decimate her community. In the nineties, she recorded the explosion of drag as a social phenomenon in New York, Berlin, Bangkok and the Philippines, photographing their public personas while showing their real lives backstage. Goldin’s newest photographs are intimate portraits, imbued with tenderness, of some of her most beloved friends. The Other Side is her homage to the queens she’s loved, many of whom she’s lost, over the last four decades.

This book marks the occasion of the exhibition Naty Abascal and Fashion! organized by Museo Jumex, Mexico City, from November 7, 2019 to January 5, 2020. Like the exhibition, it aims to evoke the big ateliers or couture studios, whose mirrors have witnessed the evolution of fashion, along with designers and models. Their reflections highlight the unique details of the cut and the proportion of the outfits that contribute to the transformation of the female silhouette, which testifies to contemporary times like any other art form. She is considered one of the most elegant women in the world. Vicente Gallart was born in Valencia, and he lives in Madrid. He is a fashion journalist, and he began his career at VOGUE Spain. He works for GQ Spain and Condé Nast College Spain. In addition, he founded the sustainable website Ecolover.life, and he is the author of the books 100% NATY: el manual de moda de Naty Abascal and IRRESISTIBLES: 100 años de it girls en la moda.

Navitimer. A mysterious name at first glance. It is in fact a contraction of two words, which correspond to the two major functions of a revolutionary watch: NAVIgation and TIMER.

A chronograph designed for airborne navigation. But much more than that, an exceptional destiny, shaped by extraordinary and visionary actors. Anthony Marquié is a French national and a trained aeronautical engineer. He swiftly turned to an international career in finance and investments. He has always been a collector of both modern and vintage watches, including many icons from the Omega production. Today he spends a lot of his time looking for rare examples, as well as studying the market for prestigious watches and collector's pieces. Grégoire Rossier is a Swiss biologist specialising in bioinformatics. Helmut Newton was in his sixties and already a well-established photographer when he and his wife moved to the French Riviera. At an age when many people would consider retirement, Newton instead plunged headfirst into one of the most prolific and liberating stages of his career. The city of Monaco was the perfect backdrop for his fashion photography, and it also provided him with a wealth of subjects for his famous portraits, including the stars of the Ballet de Monte-Carlo and the Princely Family. The Day May Break, photographed in Zimbabwe and Kenya in late 2020, is the first part of a global series portraying people and animals that have been impacted by environmental degradation and destruction. The people in the photos were all affected by climate change, displaced by cyclones and years-long droughts. Photographed at five sanctuaries, the animals were rescues that can never be re-wilded. As a result, it was safe for human strangers to be close to them, photographed so close to them, within the same frame. The fog on location is the unifying visual, as we increasingly find ourselves in a kind of limbo, a once-recognizable world now fading from view. However, in spite of their loss, these people and animals are the survivors. And therein lies possibility and hope.

People and animals were photographed in the same frame and indeed convey a sense of connectedness through a shared fate. Fog is the unifying visual, symbolic of the natural world rapidly fading from view; and an echo of the smoke from wildfires, intensified by climate change, devastating so much of the planet. But in spite of their loss, these people and animals are survivors, pioneers entering the new phase our world has reached. In The Day May Break they share their powerful stories.

Nick Brandt (*1964, London) studied painting and film at St. Martin’s School of Art, London. In 1992 he moved to California, where he still lives today. Since 2001, he has documented the destructive impact that humankind is having on the natural world and, as a result, on humans themselves. Chapter One of his seminal series The Day May Break featured photographs taken in Zimbabwe and Kenya in late 2020. Chapter Two, shot in Bolivia in 2022, is the first time in his 20-year career that Brandt has made work outside of Africa.

London- and New York-based artist Nick Waplington uses photography to capture the complex and far-reaching aspects of our lived experience. Nick Waplington is a British artist living between London and New York. He has published extensively throughout his career, including Safety in Numbers (1995), Truth or Consequences (Phaidon, 2001), Working Process (2013), a collaboration with Alexander McQueen, Hackney Riviera (2019), and Anaglypta (2020). Waplington has exhibited in galleries and museums worldwide, and in 2015, was the first living British artist to have a solo photographic exhibition in the main galleries of Tate Britain, London.

Simon Baker is a curator, writer, and educator, and is currently director of the Maison Européenne de la Photographie, Paris. Formerly, he was senior curator of international art at the Tate Modern, London
