About the Author:

James Hamilton is Curator at the University of Birmingham, and has worked at the Ulster Museum, Belfast, Portsmouth and Wakefield City Art Galleries, the Mappin Art Gallery in Sheffield and as a Director of the Yorkshire Contemporary Art Group. He organised a seminal Arthur Rackham exhibition at Sheffield, Bristol and the Victoria and Albert Museum in 1979/80 and has written biographies of J. M. W. Turner and William Heath Robinson.

“Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful.” This quote alone from William Morris could summarise the ideology of Arts & Crafts, a unique movement which triggered a veritable reform in the applied arts in England. Founded by John Ruskin, then put into practice by William Morris, the Arts & Crafts Movement promoted revolutionary ideas in Victorian England. In the middle of the “soulless” Industrial Era, when objects were standardised, the Arts & Crafts Movement proposed a return to the aesthetic at the core of production. The work of artisans and design thus became the heart of this new ideology, which influenced styles throughout the world, translating the essential ideas of Arts & Crafts into design, architecture and painting.

 A great part of the history of Morocco relates to tradition, ranging from oral culture to architecture, including various arts illumination, calligraphy, sculpture, tattooing..., - and crafts cabinet-making, ironwork, pottery, weaving, gold work...-; a tradition which handed down from one generation to the next satisfies the aspirations of each period, while embracing the opposition between ancient and modern . Bob Willoughby (1927-2009) took his first photo at the age of twelve. By 1954 his exhibitions of photographs of jazz musicians and dancers led to a contract with Globe Photos, followed by work at Harper's Bazaar. After shooting Judy Garland during the filming of A Star is Born he became the first "unit photographer"— hired specifically by movie studios to take on-set promotional "stills". The author of numerous books on photography, he lived his last years in Vence, France.
