The outsider inside. From the streets to the galleries: the artist who turned the institution upside down

From the streets of New York to the walls of its most prominent galleries, young graffiti artist Jean-Michel Basquiat (1960-1988) was catapulted to international fame in his early 20s and died of a drug overdose at 27. The subject of a feature film by fellow artist Julian Schnabel, Basquiat is one of the most admired artists to emerge from the 1980s art boom. This book explores his short but prolific career.

The present publication is dedicated to the expressive self-portraits by Jean-Michel Basquiat and covers his lifelong intensive study of the self. In Basquiat’s œuvre the self-portrait, one of the major subjects of art history, occupies a central position that has not been examined to date.

Jean-Michel Basquiat’s self-portraits are regarded as being among the most important of his radical creative works. In addition to some 50 specific portraits of himself, we can also see his series of likenesses of African-American men as concealed reproductions of the artist. Not least because Basquiat, who was affected himself by everyday racism, identified with his heroes, saints and martyrs as he portrayed them. Bohemian glass dynasties lasted for centuries, until the middle of the 20th century, when the entire community of German-stock craftsmen was expelled from the area in the turbulence of World War II. Though Gablonz will forever feel the loss of these great craftsmen, their artistry has been meticulously researched and documented by Sibylle Jargstorf for this book.

The way our environment looks, the appearance of everything from housing estates to newspapers, is partly the result of a school of art and design founded in Germany in 1919 and closed down by the Nazis in 1933. This was the Bauhaus, which has left an indelible mark on art education throughout the world. 

Setting everything against a backdrop of the times, Frank Whitford traces the ideas behind its conception and describes its teaching methods. He examines the activities of the teachers – artists as eminent as Paul Klee and Kandinsky – and the daily lives of the students. Everything is described with the aid, wherever possible, of the words of those who were there at the time.

The Bauhaus movement is one of the most significant and consequential cultural emergence of the 20th century. Walter Gropius founded this institute of design in 1919 in Weimar and it was effective in Weimar, Dessau and Berlin. The various professors, Walter Gropius from 1919 to 1928, Hannes Meyer from 1928 to 1930 and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe from 1930 to 1933, were also renowned architects of their time. The works of the Bauhaus artists, Lyonel Feininger, Wassily Kandinsky, Paul Klee, Gerhard Marcks, Oskar Schlemmer and László Moholy-Nagy as well as those of the students and young faculty members, Josef Albers, Herbert Bayer, Marcel Breuer, Gunta Stölzl and Joost Schmidt, were unanimously admired and aroused the interest of museums across the world.

Their teachings in design are still observed in today’s architecture and design schools but also in general art classes. The products of the Bauhaus, such as Marcel Breuer’s well-known steel pipe furniture, became inexpensive classic design standards. The Bauhaus buildings have made architectural history and now belong to the UNESCO world heritage.

The Bauhaus movement was built on the basis of new aesthetic perspectives and creative teaching programmes for the education of architects, designers and artists for a new, democratic society after WWI.

Its syllabus was a combination of creative training, basic artistic knowledge, productive workshop production, and learning to work as a team. Animated by a social awareness, the Bauhaus would soon combine its creativity with industrialisation and mass production and conceive numerous products which were not only beautiful but durable, useful and affordable.

In 1933, the Nazis closed the Bauhaus, triggering the emigration of many of its members, many choosing America, and thus the ideas of the Bauhaus were spread worldwide.
