Abstract pioneer. Harmonies in red, yellow, and blue

Less was more for Piet Mondrian. With his strictly limited pictorial elements — the colours red, yellow, and blue, black lines, white space — he sought a ‘universal harmony’ and created a whole new domain of avant-garde abstraction. This essential guide presents Mondrian's pioneering oeuvre, as well as his works of fashion and design, from White Stripes album covers to haute-couture dresses.

A key figure in the international avant-garde, Piet Mondrian (1872–1944) was at once an extraordinary painter and leading art theoretician whose influence resonates to this day. Coining the term “Neo-plasticism”, he pursued a style of painting composed only of primary colours against a grid of black vertical and horizontal lines and a white base background.

Mondrian’s vision was that this essential painting would help to achieve a society in which art as such has no place, but rather exists for the total realization of “beauty.” With stints in Amsterdam, Paris, London, and New York, Mondrian drew upon the modern metropolis and modern music, especially jazz, as points of inspiration. In 1917, he co-founded De Stijl, originally a publication, and subsequently a circle of practitioners, committed to a strictly geometrical art of horizontals and verticals.

With key works and succinct texts, this introductory book presents Mondrian's distinctive and pioneering oeuvre, an abiding inspiration for fashion, art, architecture, and design, from White Stripes album covers to Yves Saint Laurent dresses.

Claude Monet (1840-1926) was both the most typical and the most individual painter associated with the Impressionist movement. His long life and extraordinary work were dedicated to a pictorial exploration of the sensations which reality, and in particular landscape, offer the human eye. Monet’s poplars, grain stacks, Rouen Cathedral, and water lilies paintings—among the most beloved works of the Impressionist period—were created long before the currents of the contemporary avant-garde and had an inestimable influence on the development of modern art.

Lasting impressions of nature. The most typical and the most individual Impressionist painter

Claude Monet (1840-1926) was the most typical and the most individual Impressionist painter. His long life he dedicated to a pictorial exploration of the sensations which reality, and in particular landscape, offers the human eye.

But while Monet the painter was faithful and persevering in the pursuit of his motifs, his personal life followed a more restless course. Parisian by birth, he discovered plein-air painting as a youth in the provinces, where one of his homes, Argenteuil, has come to represent the artistic flowering and official establishment of Impressionism as a movement, with Monet as its creative leader.

In his endeavor to capture the ever-changing face of reality, Monet went beyond Impressionism and thereby beyond the confines of self-contained panel painting: in Giverny he painted the Poplars, Grain Stacks and Rouen Cathedral series in which he addressed one motif in constantly new variations. Here, too, Monet laid out the famous garden with its water-lily pond which he was to paint on huge canvases well into the 1920s. He thereby sought to render not reality as objectively experienced, but rather that which takes place "between the motif and the artist." In their open, merely tenuously representational structure and impressive scale, Monet’s water lily paintings — created long before the currents of the contemporary avant-garde — point the way to the developments of the future.

Prince of the Impressionists. Capturing the ever-changing face of reality

Hailed the Prince of the Impressionists, Claude Monet (1840 - 1926) transformed expectations for the purpose of paint on canvas. Defying the precedent of centuries, Monet did not seek to render only reality, but the act of perception itself. Working en plein air with rapid, impetuous brush strokes, he interrogated the play of light on the hues, patterns, and contours and the way in which these visual impressions fall upon the eye.

Monet's interest in this space between the motif and the artist encompassed too the ephemeral nature of each image we see. In his beloved water lily series, as well as in paintings of poplars, grain stacks, and the Rouen cathedral, he returned to the same motif in different seasons, different weather conditions, and at different times of the day, to explore the constant mutability of our visual environment.

This book offers the essential introduction to an artist whose works simultaneously reflected upon the purpose of a picture and the passage of time, and in so doing transformed irrevocably the story of art.

Master of the Sublime. The essential Impressionist

Along with Turner, no artist has sought more than Claude Monet (1840-1926) to capture light itself on canvas. Of all the Impressionists, it was the man Cézanne called "only an eye, but my God what an eye!" who stayed completely true to the principle of absolute fidelity to the visual sensation, painting directly from the object.

It could be said that Monet reinvented the possibilities of colour, and whether it was through his early interest in Japanese prints, his time in the dazzling light of Algeria as a conscript or his personal acquaintance with the major painters of the late 1800s, what Monet produced throughout his long life would change forever the way we perceive both the natural world and its attendant phenomena. The high point of his explorations were the late series of waterlilies, painted in his own garden at Giverny, that, in their moves towards almost total formlessness, are really the origin of abstract art.

This biography does full justice to this most remarkable and profoundly influential of artists and offers numerous reproductions and archive photos alongside a detailed and insightful commentary.

The author:

Daniel Wildenstein (1917-2001) was an art historian and member of the Académie des Beaux-Arts (Paris). From 1939 onwards, he was Director of the Wildenstein Galleries of New York, London and Tokyo. He edited several international journals, e.g. the magazine Arts from 1956-1962 and the Gazette des Beaux-Arts after 1963. He co-founded the Fondation Wildenstein in 1970 (it was renamed the WildensteinInstitute in 1984), and was a prime mover in many exhibitions of international repute. Daniel Wildenstein also edited the catalogues raisonnés of various 18th, 19th and 20th-century artists. He was a world authority on Impressionism, and published catalogues of the works of Gauguin, Manet and Monet.

Minimalist bodies, sensual forms

The sensual, voluptuous shapes in the work of British sculptor Henry Moore (1889-1986) are the sign of his unmistakable signature style. Often depicting human or human-like forms—especially female—Moore`s sculptures, with their abstract style, brought a distinctive brand of Modernism to fine art. His cast bronze and carved marble sculptures grace the gardens and galleries of the world`s finest museums and have earned him a devoted following. Particularly beloved are his many mother-and-child compositions.

Mighty Morris. The arts and crafts power of designer William Morris

William Morris was a polymath designer, writer, artist, and socialist activist, associated with England’s Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood as well as Arts and Crafts movement. His prolific design work included tiles, embroidery, tapestries, wallpaper, and carpets and championed handcraftsmanship, natural dyes, “art for all”, and beautiful patterns of subtly stylized natural forms.

William Morris (1834–1896) was one of the greatest creative figures of the 19th century. As a visionary designer, as well as a manufacturer, writer, artist, and socialist activist, he pioneered the Arts and Crafts movement of the Victorian era, and left an extraordinary influence on architecture, textile, and interior design.

This richly illustrated book offers a suitably beautiful introduction to Morris’s colourful life and all aspects of his design work, including interiors, tiles, embroidery, tapestries, carpets, and calligraphy. Though best known in his lifetime as a poet and author, it is these exquisite designs that secured Morris’s posthumous reputation. As page after page dazzles with their beautiful patterns and forms, we explore the pioneering craftsmanship and natural motifs that inspired them, as well as Morris’s remarkable cultural legacy, through British textiles, Bauhaus, and even modern environmentalism.

The authors:

Charlotte & Peter Fiell have written numerous TASCHEN books, including 1000 Chairs, Design of the 20th Century, Industrial Design A–Z, Scandinavian Design, Designing the 21st Century, Graphic Design for the 21st Century, 1000 Lights, and Contemporary Graphic Design. The history of Russia has seesawed through the centuries between Europe and Asia. In this dichotomy, St. Petersburg looked west and Moscow looked east. Power moved between the two cities; the Tsars were crowned in Moscow yet ruled from St Petersburg. But at the turn of the 20th century, just before Tsarist Russia came tumbling down, both cities experienced a sudden, brilliant flowering of the visual, literary and performing arts. Known in Russia as the Silver Age, this cultural renaissance is captured in all its dazzling originality from the unprecedented synthesis of the arts in the productions of Diaghilev's "Ballets Russes" to Stanislavsky's groundbreaking stagings of Chekov, to Malevich's revolutionary "Black Square" in this impeccably written, sumptuously illustrated volume.

From Stalin’s demise to Gorbachev’s glasnost, this is the definitive survey of underground Soviet art in the post-war era.
Published in association with the Zimmerli Art Museum at Rutgers University, New Brunswick, New Jersey.

The Norton and Nancy Dodge Collection at Rutgers University’s Zimmerli Art Museum is the largest collection of Soviet nonconformist art in existence. Comprising more than 25,000 works by over 900 artists, it documents the activities of underground artists from Moscow and Leningrad, as well as from the former Soviet republics of Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Armenia, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Ukraine, Belarus, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan between the years 1956–1987. This volume features the most outstanding of these works in stunning color and black-and-white reproductions. Essays by leading scholars and statements and interviews with artists such as Ilya Kabakov, the Gerlovins, Vitaly Komar and Alexander Melamid, who played a major role in this important movement, offer a general critical appraisal and history of the movement and highlight certain distinctive aspects such as performance and experimental art. The book also looks at this movement through a Western lens, comparing and contrasting the works with those of the Conceptualists in the US and the rest of the Free World.

Moscow, Splendours of the Romanovs recounts the history of three hundred years of rule by the Romanov dynasty through over six hundred works of great beauty, including the famous eggs made by the jeweller Carl Fabergé. An evocation of the Cathedral of the Dormition in the Kremlin brings back to life the splendid ceremonies of the coronation of the Czars, while examples of gold and silver work, tableware and cabinet-making illustrate the quintessence of the applied arts that underwent a revival in 19th-century Moscow: a capital that was never abandoned but whose centuries-old architecture, destroyed in the fire of 1812, lives on in its own way in engravings, drawings and paintings.
Like a phoenix, Moscow rose again from its ashes, as is demonstrated both by the engravings from the middle of the 19th century and by the creative energies of its painters, architects and craftsmen.
Photographs and early films immerse us in the family life of Nicholas II, the last of the Romanovs, while the Russian avant-garde, born in Moscow at the beginning of the 20th century, brought the house’s three hundred years of rule to an end.
