As an avant-garde artist of the twentieth century, painter Paul Klee's work defies classification. What is indisputable, however, is its originality and brilliance. Taken from the artist's most prolific years,1917-1933, this book presents works that Klee never intended to sell. More than 100 color plates reveal Klee's chromatic genius and wide stylistic range. Along with an indepth biography, the book features three essays, which examine Klee's versatility, place him in context with his contemporaries, and discuss his process for cataloging his works. The result is a unique and far-reaching exploration of one of the twentieth century's most important and admired artists, at the most fecund stage of his career.

This is a select overview of Paul Pfeiffer’s work over the last decade, including his most recently produced projects as well as his fundamental work which explores new technologies in a creative process that unfolds in diverse media of video, installation, sculpture and photography. For his most widely recognized work, the artist digitally alters old film footage or TV sports events to erase the main characters of the scenes, dissecting the role played by the mass media in the contemporary cult of celebrity. The book also examines Pfeiffer’s creative process with original essays by Lawrence Chua (writer and professor at the Architecture Department of Cornell University, New York), Jessica Hagedorn (writer, Philippines), Niklas Maak (critic and columnist for the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung) and Katy Siegel (Professor of Art History at Hunter College, and critic for Artforum), and other writings selected by the artist, including the works of Don Delillo, Ellias Canetti, Gary Indiana and Roger Caillois.

Biography:
Born in 1966 in Honolulu, Hawaii (U.S.A.), Paul Pfeiffer spent most of his childhood in the Philippines, until he settled in New York in 1990. There, he studied at Hunter College, and later participated in the Whitney Independent Study Program. Since the beginning of his art career, Pfeiffer has won numerous awards, including the first Bucksbuam Award (2000) at the Whitney Biennial, and scholarships at Massachusetts Institute of Technology and ArtPace. His work has been shown in numerous solo shows, including the MIT List Visual Arts Center of Cambridge, Massachusetts; the Museum of Contemporary Art of Chicago; Artangel of London; K21 of Dьsseldorf and the Kunst-Werke of Berlin. Pfeiffer was selected for the 49th Venice Biennale and most recently for the Sydney Biennial, 2008.

Known for always pushing the envelope when it comes to showing sex and violence on screen, Paul Verhoeven has directed controversial films in several genres, including the erotic thriller (Basic Instinct), melodrama (Showgirls) and science fiction (RoboCop, Total Recall, Starship Troopers, Hollow Man). However, even before going to Hollywood, Verhoeven had been a succès de scandale in his native Netherlands, where he directed a war saga (Soldier of Orange), a medieval epic (Flesh+Blood), a psychosexual thriller (The Fourth Man) and a sex comedy (Turkish Delight, which was voted Best Dutch Film of the Century at the Netherlands Film Festival). Verhoeven has shown that visceral thrills can be thought provoking, challenging our received notions of heroism, patriotism, and eroticism. Many of the greatest artists since Dürer and Rembrandt have used the print medium to explore some of their most important ideas. Paula Rego is in this tradition, giving full rein to her imagination in both etching and lithography, and using the media with exuberance to create work that is as disturbing, erotic and powerful as her paintings.

Dave and Holly Combs travelled to New York City from Indianapolis, Indiana, to assist with Sept. 11 recovery efforts. While exploring Manhattan during their off hours, they were inspired by the wealth of stickers they saw all over the city.
