Here is a look at Lalique’s creative process through a selection of unusual works – inluding glassware, paintings, jewelery, and fashion designs – hat highlight both the technical and aesthetic aspects of his actual craft. Not just another showcase of Lalique art nouveau glories, this catalog includes photographs taken by the artist, preparatory sketches and life-size studies, and the objects that inspired Lalique–as well as finished pieces from a period when he laid the foundations for his style. The authors compare Lalique’s work to that of his creative contemporaries and contextualize his work within the creative arts of the time. They show how Lalique’s creativity was situated among the arts, poetry, and literature of the day, and how he used other art forms to effect a stylistic renewal of jewelery that is still treasured. With stunning images and authoritative essays, this monograph illuminates the full range of this ingenious craftsman.

René Magritte (1898–1967) was one of the most intriguing painters associated with Surrealism, but he did not fully find his voice until after breaking ties with the movement. This book, the first to look exclusively at Magritte’s late career, examines his most important bodies of work from the 1940s through the 1960s, and shows how they marked a fundamental shift in painting from Modernism to our own time.

Featuring more than sixty artworks, René Magritte: The Fifth Season explores how Magritte balanced irony and conviction, philosophy and fantasy, to illuminate the gaps between what we see and what we know. Subjects explored in this volume include the artist’s Renoir period; the période vache, with its Fauvist- and Expressionist-style paintings that are little known to American audiences; the ‘hypertrophy of objects’ paintings, a series that plays with the scale of familiar objects; and the enigmatic Dominion of Light suite, paintings that suggest the simultaneous experience of day and night. Together, the works reveal Magritte as an artist acutely attuned to the paradoxes at work within reality, and an enduring champion of the role of mystery in life and art.

In this richly illustrated book, Xavier Canonne, director of the Museum of Photography in Charleroi, dives into René Magritte’s photo and film archive, revealing a lesser-known side of the surrealist master.

Discovered in the 1970s, more than 10 years after the artist’s death, this collection gives us access to a family album, an informal Magritte, from his childhood to the last years of his life. We see Magritte with his parents and brothers, as a newly married man with his wife Georgette, and with his contemporaries in the Brussels Surrealist group. Spontaneous snapshots are complemented by posed scenes, including improvised tableaus with his fellow artists, parodies of famous movies consciously arranged with Georgette, portraits of Magritte at his easel at home, and staged photographs as models for his paintings.

Images where the artist and his friends hide their faces or turn away from the camera particularly resonate with his paintings and his investigation of the ‘hidden visible’. While other Surrealists such as Man Ray and Raoul Ubac made photography an essential part of their work, Magritte remained a true painter. Yet this book demonstrates that his photographs and films are so pervaded with his spirit that they are inseparable from his oeuvre of paintings. Far from being merely entertaining occasional images, they shed a familiar light on the painter’s thought and evidence the same investigation of the mysteries of the world.

La belle vie

Impressionism’s most joyful paintings

Pierre-Auguste Renoir (1841-1919) is universally acclaimed and celebrated: museums pride themselves on his paintings, crowds flock to his retrospectives. His work shows art at its most light-hearted, sensual and luminous. Renoir never wanted anything ugly in his paintings, nor any dramatic action. “I like pictures which make me want to wander through them when it’s a landscape,” he said, “or pass my hand over breast or back if it’s a woman.” Renoir’s entire oeuvre is dominated by the depiction of women - again and again he painted “these faunesses with their pouting lips” (Mallarmé) and invented a new image of feminine beauty and sensuality. A prolific painter - he made several thousand works in his lifetime - he is perhaps the most beloved of the Impressionists.

About the Series:
Every book in TASCHEN's Basic Art Series features:

* a detailed chronological summary of the artist's life and work, covering the cultural and historical importance of the artist
* approximately 100 color illustrations with explanatory captions
* a concise biography

Pierre-Auguste Renoir (1841–1919) is so heavily associated with Impressionist painting that his last creative period has frequently been ignored. This publication devotes itself to precisely these last three creative and innovative decades, in which Renoir abandoned Impressionism.

He dedicated himself during this period to cheerful subjects such as bathers, domestic idylls, and landscapes that were influenced by both classical mythology and his move to the south ofFrance. His fluid brushstrokes and masterful use of color were much admired by the up-and-coming modernist avant-garde.

More than three hundred color illustrations graphically demonstrate the influence Renoir had on younger artists such as Bonnard, Matisse, and Picasso, as well as the ways they examined his work.

Pierre-Auguste Renoir (1841–1919) is so closely associated with Impressionist painting that the surprising diversity of his early work is frequently forgotten. His most important model during these early years was the artist’s mistress, Lise Tréhot, with whom he had a relationship between 1865 and 1872. After posing for a large group of prominent early works, including Woman in a Garden and En été (both 1868), Lise turned her back on the Bohemian lifestyle in favor of a bourgeois marriage. The paintings created between 1864 and the end of the following decade show the broad spectrum of Renoir’s art and the development of his artistic vocabulary, including the Impressionist phase. This is the first extensive examination of the painter’s early oeuvre and the strong influence of his close friendships with other artists, such as Éd0uard Manet, Claude Monet, Frédéric Bazille, and Alfred Sisley.

La Vie en Rose. The most comprehensive retrospective of Renoir’s work

Often misunderstood, Pierre-Auguste Renoir remains one of history’s most-loved painters — undoubtedly because his work exudes such warmth, tenderness, and good cheer. Gathering brilliant reproductions and sketches, as well as photos and a complete chronology illustrating his life and work, this is the essential work of reference on Renoir.

Pierre-Auguste Renoir’s (1841–1919) timelessly charming paintings still reflect our ideals of happiness, love, and beauty. Derived from our large-format volume, the most comprehensive retrospective of his work published to date, this compact edition examines the personal history and motivation behind the legend. Though he began by painting landscapes in the Impressionist style, Renoir found his true affinity in portraits, after which he abandoned the Impressionists altogether. Though often misunderstood, Renoir remains one of history’s most well-loved painters — undoubtedly because his works exude such warmth, tenderness, and good spirit.

In an incisive text tracing the artist’s career and stylistic evolution, Gilles Néret shows how Renoir reinvented the painted female form, with his everyday goddesses and their plump forms, rounded hips and breasts. Renoir’s later phase, marked by his return to the simple pleasure of the female nude in his baigneuses series, was his most innovative and stylistically influential, and would inspire such masters as Matisse and Picasso.

With a complete chronology, bibliography, photos, sketches, and brilliant reproductions, this is the essential work of reference on this enduring master artist.

The restaurant boom of the past two decades has been a breeding-ground for arresting graphic design. At the top end of the market a restaurant’s menu, matchbooks, business cards, signage and napkins are as important to the brand and image as its interiors. Lower down the scale, where design budgets tend to be tighter, they become absolutely vital. When you don’t have the money for endless revamps of your interior how else do you differentiate yourself in a crowded market? It’s here that graphic design takes the strain, regularly setting the entire tone of a restaurant. This book celebrates the unsung heroes of restaurant graphics and illustrates the best examples of their craft from around the world, from agencies such as Pentagram, Bruce Mau, Lippa Pearce, Frost, North and Cake Design.

The Egyptian Revolution that began on 25 January 2011 immediately gave rise to a wave of popular political and social expression in the form of graffiti and street art that were almost unknown under the old regime.

Mia Gröndahl has followed and documented the rapidly changing graffiti art of the new Egypt from its beginnings, and here in more than 430 colour images celebrates the imagination, skill, humour and political will of the young artists and activists who have claimed the walls of Cairo and other Egyptian cities as their canvas.

From the simplest hand-written messages, through stencils and martyr portraits, to the elaborate murals of Mohamed Mahmoud Street, the messages on the walls are presented in sections punctuated by interviews with some of the individual artists whose work has broken fresh ground

The human body is a challenging subject to depict because of its intricate complexity and movement. “To do it well requires an in-depth knowledge of anatomy and an awareness of what lies beneath all parts of the body, for the greatest figurative art gives the impression that there is a living skeleton inside the body,” notes artist and veteran art educator Rey Bustos. With Rey’s Anatomy: Figurative Art Lessons from the Classroom, Bustos provides essential anatomical information, detailed studies, and valuable drawing tutorials to equip artists with a basic understanding of the skeletal structure and muscle system of the human body.

Having taught figure drawing for 30 years, he presents complex concepts in a remarkably accessible manner, referencing works from the Old Masters to demonstrate how an artist can take the same anatomical knowledge and express it in diverse and personal ways and, with study and practice, portray the human form without being hindered by the process or the intellect. Rey’s Anatomy explores anatomy first, followed by daily drawing exercises to help refine one’s figurative work, while featuring the extraordinary work of his students throughout the book ― alongside his own ― a testament to how his lessons have benefited generations of artists.

About the Author:

Rey Bustos is one of the country's preeminent artistic-anatomy teachers. He graduated with honors from the prestigious ArtCenter College of Design in 1989, and has been teaching figure drawing, composition, and 2D and 3D anatomy ever since. Bustos currently teaches at ArtCenter College of Design in Pasadena, CA, Los Angeles Academy of Figurative Art, and Kline Academy of Art in Culver City, CA and conducts online classes for Computer Graphics Masters Academy (CGMA), New Masters Academy and Gnomon School of Visual Effects.

"We all perform. It's what we do for each other all the time, deliberately or unintentionally. It's a way of telling about ourselves in the hope of being recognized as what we'd like to be."
 - Richard Avedon, 1974

The preeminent stars and artists of the performing arts from the second half of the 20th century offered their greatest gifts - and, sometimes, their inner lives - to Richard Avedon. More than 200 are portrayed in Performance, many in photographs that have been rarely or never seen before. Of course, the great stars light the way: Hepburn and Chaplin, Monroe and Garland, Brando and Sinatra. But here too are the actors and comedians, pop stars and divas, musicians and dancers, artists in all mediums with public lives that were essentially performances, who stand at the pinnacle of our cultural achievement.

The celebrated author and critic John Lahr offers an elegant assessment of Avedon’s achievement. Four supremely talented artists from the performing arts - Mike Nichols, André Gregory, Mitsuko Uchida, and Twyla Tharp - contribute lively and moving memoirs about their collaborations with Avedon.

About the Authors:

John Lahr is Senior Drama Critic of The New Yorker. In 2002, he was the first drama critic ever to win a Tony Award.

Mike Nichols is an American Emmy Award, Academy Award, Grammy Award, and Tony Award-winning stage and film director, writer, and producer. André Gregory is an American director and actor. His best-known film appearance was as the title character in My Dinner with Andre

Mitsuko Uchida is a classical pianist, renowned for her recordings of Mozart, Beethoven, and Schubert.

Twyla Tharp is a leading American dancer and choreographer.

This lavishly illustrated volume documents the first public presentation of a recent monumental sculpture by Richard Serra, one of the most significant artists of his generation.

Richard Serra has produced large-scale sculptures for architectural, urban, and landscape settings spanning the globe. This volume, published to coincide with a 2021–22 exhibition at Gagosian Le Bourget in Paris, presents a recent sculpture by the artist: Transmitter (2020). Made of weatherproof steel, Transmitter is monumental in scale, measuring approximately 4 meters in height and 18 meters in width and length. Here, immersive installation views of the sculpture within the vast exhibition space of Gagosian Le Bourget in Paris are accompanied by plate photography of fourteen recent works on paper by the artist. A new text by art historian Maria Stavrinaki (in English and French) reads Serra’s long sculptural practice through three formal, temporal, and political moments.

Richard Serra was born in 1938 in San Francisco, and lives and works in New York. His work is held in major museum collections around the world. Since 1983, Gagosian has presented thirty-seven exhibitions of Serra’s work in the United States and Europe.

About the Authors:

Maria Stavrinaki is Associate Professor of Art History and Theory at the Université Paris I, Panthéon-Sorbonne. She has worked extensively on the art of the 20th century and is particularly interested in questions of time and history in modernity, working at the crossroads of artist practices and discourses, the construction of the human sciences, and political questions. Her most recent book is Saisis par la préhistoire: Enquête sur l’art et le temps des modernes (2019), translated into English by Zone Books (Transfixed by Prehistory: An Inquiry into Modern Art and Time, 2022).  She co-curated the exhibition Préhistoire: Une énigme moderne at the Centre Pompidou, Paris (2019), and is currently preparing an exhibition on art in the atomic age for the Musée d’Art Moderne de Paris (2024).
