Around 1900, the Viennese Secession and the Wiener Werkstätte turned Vienna into the birthplace of modernism. This opulent publication on Viennese modernism (1890–1918) focuses on famous ornamental works by Gustav Klimt, erotic depictions of the body by Egon Schiele, and works by other artists, architects, furniture designers, and craftspeople from the Viennese Secession and the Wiener Werkstätte. Adolf Loos, Otto Wagner, Koloman Moser, Joseph Maria Olbrich, and Josef Hoffmann count among the most prominent representatives of this period. Early works by Oskar Kokoschka, oil paintings by Richard Gerstl, and several paintings by Arnold Schönberg are also featured in this volume. The painterly ornamentation of paintings, as well as objects and designs from the Wiener Werkstätte, clearly demonstrate how the artists made reference to one another. The close cooperation among all of these artists involved a new concept of art, that of the Gesamtkunstwerk, which continued to be developed later at the Bauhaus and in the De Stijl movement.

This publication presents what a wealth and surprising variety of paintings were produced in Europe between the French Revolution and World War I. The selection of about 150 masterpieces, ranging from Classicism to Romanticism and Realism, demonstrates how German painters examined very different themes from European history and literature, how they traveled throughout Europe, and ultimately how they influenced other countries with their artistic ideas: nineteenth-century German painting was European.
Painting ranging from Karl Friedrich Schinkel and Caspar David Friedrich to Adolph Menzel and Max Liebermann is the theme of this richly illustrated publication. Informative brief essays by known experts discuss first-class works from the three largest museum associations in the cities of Berlin, Dresden, and Munich, as well as twenty other important German collections, showing the perception of Europe at that time. An appendix contains extensive commentary on each individual painting. A synopsis of German history with a view to Europe rounds off this standard work on German nineteenth-century art.

In a single, elegant, opulently illustrated volume: the bewitching landscapes of Vincent van Gogh, painted with overwhelming creative energy.

The landscapes in which Vincent van Gogh (1853–1890) lived had a profound influence on him and his art. In his encounters with nature, the restless artist attained a harmony and balance that was otherwise denied him. At the same time, he discovered his own completely unique artistic vocabulary and hence a radically new type of freedom in art.

This elegant, full-color volume is the first to provide a comprehensive survey of van Gogh’s work as a landscape painter. Essays by renowned art historians and van Gogh specialists explore this important aspect of his oeuvre. The reader becomes directly aware of how the earthy tones of his early Dutch phase were gradually replaced by a lighter style of painting in Paris . In the south of France , the artist then discovered the intense, brilliant colors and vital expression that have made his paintings so fascinating to this day. He was under the spell of creation throughout all the periods of his brief life and career; employing motifs such as the sower, fruit trees in blossom, the wheat harvest, or the reaper, he described the ever-renewing cycle of nature’s forces.

The Mouse Who Changed the World. The ultimate history of a modern hero: Mickey Mouse

Celebrate 90+ years of Mickey Mouse with one of the most expansive illustrated publications on the Disney universe: behind-the-scenes shots, rare animation art, and vintage comics trace Mickey’s cartoons, his comic adventures, the world of Mickey merchandise and memorabilia, as well as the legendary Mickey Mouse Club.

On November 18, 1928, the world’s most famous Mouse made his very first public debut. Today, we celebrate 90+ years of Mickey in one of the most expansive illustrated publications on the Disney universe. Starting with the first sketches of a character who was almost named Mortimer, we trace the career of Walt Disney’s and Ub Iwerks’s most famous creation, one met with an explosion of worldwide popularity preceded only by the earlier successes of Charlie Chaplin.

With unlimited access to Disney’s vast historical collections as well as public and private collections, the authors bring Mickey’s success story to life: concept art, story sketches, background paintings, and animation drawings, as well as historical photographs, trace the origins and evolution of such timeless favorites as Steamboat WillieThe Band Concert, and Brave Little Tailor. They also follow Mickey as he builds on this legendary library of short cartoons by appearing in two historic feature-length films, Fantasia and Fun and Fancy Free.

Extensive archival research sheds new light on little-known chapters of Mickey’s career, the origins of the Mickey Mouse Club, and his use as a patriotic icon during World War II. Along the way, we encounter the work of all major Mickey artists in both film and comics, including such greats as Ub Iwerks, Win Smith, Ferdinand Horvath, Fred Moore, Floyd Gottfredson, Carl Barks, Manuel Gonzales, Paul Murry, Romano Scarpa, Giorgio Cavazzano, Byron Erickson, and César Ferioli.

Mickey Mouse has left an indelible mark on everyday culture as well as high art, becoming a favored subject for Pop artists such as Andy Warhol, Keith Haring, and Roy Lichtenstein. As Walt Disney once said: “I only hope that we never lose sight of one thing—that it was all started by a mouse.” And an end to the success story is nowhere in sight. Today, 90+ years after his creation, Mickey remains as lovable and popular as ever. Let’s pay tribute to the little fellow, his legend, and his legacy with a monument to the one and only Mickey Mouse.

Walton Ford , Bill Buford

At first glance, Walton Ford’s large-scale, highly-detailed watercolors of animals may recall the prints of 19th century illustrators John James Audubon and Edward Lear, and others of the colonial era. But a closer look reveals a complex and disturbingly anthropomorphic universe, full of symbols, sly jokes, and allusions to the 'operatic' nature of traditional natural history themes. The beasts and birds populating this contemporary artist's life-size paintings are never mere objects, but dynamic actors in allegorical struggles: a wild turkey crushes a small parrot in its claw; a troupe of monkeys wreak havoc on a formal dinner table, an American buffalo is surrounded by bloodied white wolves. The book's title derives from The Pancha Tantra, an ancient Indian book of animal tales considered the precursor to Aesop’s Fables.

This large-format edition includes an in-depth exploration of Walton Ford’s oeuvre, a complete biography, and excerpts from his textual inspirations: Vietnamese folktales and the letters of Benjamin Franklin, the Autobiography of Benvenuto Cellini and Audubon’s Ornithological Biography.

A comprehensive survey of the work of the influential Kenyan-American artist Wangechi Mutu

Wangechi Mutu’s multidisciplinary practice grapples with contemporary realities while proffering new models for a radically changed future informed by feminism, Afrofuturism, and interspecies symbiosis. Her work addresses some of today's most critical questions concerning historical violence and its impact on women, together with our inextricable ties toward one another, our ecosystems, and other life forms.

Accompanying a major solo exhibition at the New Museum opening in February 2023, this expansive survey will trace the entirety of Mutu’s influential career chronologically, from early sculptural works of the late 1990s to her collage works of the early 2000s and more recent video works, large-scale sculptures, and site-specific interventions.

This monograph provides the opportunity to see thematic through-lines and progressions across the entire arc of Mutu's career to date. Her sculptures inaugurated the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Façade Project, and her work is in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art, New York, and Tate Modern, London, among other major institutions.

As well as being one of the leading figures in the American Pop Art movement, Andy Warhol was a painter, printmaker, occasional sculptor and filmmaker whose work carried on the tradition of Dadaism which questioned the very validity of art itself. He used images and objects, and the means of their production to draw draw parallels with cultural processes. Thus, by means of a variety of techniques, but principally the choice of images, their visual repetition and pictorial isolation, and the use of colour, Warhol makes us aware of contemporary materialism, political manipulation, economic exploitation, conspicuous consumption, media hero-worship, and the creation of artificially-induced needs and aspirations. Through manipulating images and the public persona of the artist, Warhol also confronts us with the contradictions and superficialities of contemporary culture and the art it has engendered, whilst incorporating in his paintings and sculptures the very techniques of mass production that are central to the modern world, emphasizing to the point of absurdity the complete detachment from social and artistic commitment that he saw in the world around him. Despite the unevenness and shallowness of much of his later work, Andy Warhol was one of the most brilliant, challenging and intentionally infuriating artists of the last half of the twentieth century.

Andy Warhol - A critical observer of American society

Andy Warhol is recognized today as the most important exponent of the Pop Art movement. He overturned the traditional understanding of art and placed in its stead a concept that retracts the individuality of the artist.

Warhol was a critical observer of American society, exposing his compatriots' consumerism in his paintings ('Campbell-' and 'Brillo' series), as well as their fascination for sensational journalism. In 1963 Warhol founded his 'Factory' in New York, literally a manufactory of ideas and work, which influenced film in the 1960s, published the influential magazine Interview in the late 1970s, and also produced Warhol's own artwork: Warhol conceived the idea, and a 'worker' in his factory carried it out.

The work remained (consciously) unsigned - a fact which nevertheless did nothing to diminish Warhol's reputation. He once complained that rich New Yorkers would willingly hang his "Electric Chain" in their living rooms - as long as its colours co-ordinated with the wallpaper and draperies.

About the Series:

Pop star. Soap boxes and celebrities

Andy Warhol (1928–1987) is hailed as the most important proponent of the Pop Art movement. A critical and creative observer of American society, he explored key themes of consumerism, materialism, media, and celebrity.

Drawing on contemporary advertisements, comic strips, consumer products, and Hollywood s most famous faces, Warhol proposed a radical reevaluation of what constituted artistic subject matter. Through Warhol, a Campbell s soup can and Coca Cola bottle became as worthy of artistic status as any traditional still life. At the same time, Warhol reconfigured the role of the artist. Famously stating I want to be a machine, he systematically reduced the presence of his own authorship, working with mass-production methods and images, as well as dozens of assistants in a studio he dubbed The Factory.

This book introduces Warhol s multifaceted, prolific oeuvre, which revolutionized distinctions between high and low art and integrated ideas of living, producing, and consuming that remain central questions of modern experience.

About the series:

Each book in TASCHEN's Basic Art series features:

- a detailed chronological summary of the life and oeuvre of the artist, covering his or her cultural and historical importance
- a concise biography
- approximately 100 illustrations with explanatory captions
