Investigations by Sara Penco stem from the insightful finding of the absence of a key figure in the Sistine Chapel’s Last Judgement fresco. Prior to this illuminating research, Mary Magdalene was not unequivocally identified within Michelangelo’s masterpiece. Father Pfeiffer, with whom Penco establishes an inescapable dialectic, had already hypothesised the presence of Mary Magdalene in the fresco, but it is the scholar, for the first time in these pages, who convincingly justifies her identification. Mary Magdalene is closely connected to the salient episodes in the life of Jesus. The author rightly wonders, therefore, how it is possible that a figure so central to the biblical narrative and the Christian imagination could have been excluded from the depiction of the Parousia. This observation gives rise to an accurate reflection on the iconography of the saint and the Judgement, in relation to the sacred texts and in relation to Michelangelo’s poetics and production. About the Author:

Sara Penco is an art restorer, whose work includes the restoration of the frescoes by Filippino Lippi in the Chapel Carafa in Santa Maria Sopra Minerva, of some of the ceilings in the Chamber of Deputies of the Italian Parliament, restorations in the Villa Algardi, and in the interiors of Villa Pamphili, all in Rome. She is the creator of the Smarticon method, a patented technique for classification, cataloguing, and tracking valuable assets, particularly works from the art world. She has contributed to the preservation of prestigious works and written several unpublished works for the academic world, that were subsequently the subject of further studies, exhibitions, and publications. Sara has participated in numerous national and international conferences focusing on the discovery of newly uncovered works and on innovative technologies for the preservation of Cultural Heritage.

About the Author:

Sunshine Cobb, author of Mastering Hand Building, is a ceramic artist and instructor based in California, where she is currently a visiting professor at Sacramento State University. She has previously held adjunct or visiting professor roles at Sonoma State University, University of Pacific, and Utah State. She has experience with everything from eight-day anagama wood firings to slip casting ornaments, but she focuses her talent on functional ware, embracing the richness of earthenware and exploring the challenge of electric firing. Sunshine has been the recipient of the Windgate Fellowship Emerging Artist award, a featured emerging artist in Ceramics Monthly (cover artist), and a long-term resident at Archie Bray. She has taught workshops across the country including Penland School of Crafts, Anderson Ranch Arts Center, Arrowmont, Santa Fe Clay, and The Clay Studio. She holds a BA in studio art from CSU Sacramento and an MFA in ceramic art from Utah State University.

Ben Carter is a studio potter and workshop instructor and the author of Mastering the Potter’s Wheel. He received his BFA in ceramics/painting from Appalachian State University and his MFA in ceramics from the University of Florida. He has lectured and presented workshops at universities and craft centers in the United States, China, Australia, Canada, and New Zealand and exhibited internationally in numerous invitational and juried shows. Ben’s work has been featured in the Australian Journal of Ceramics, Pottery Making Illustrated, and Ceramics Monthly; Pottery Making Illustrated named him Ceramic Arts 2016 Yearbook Artist of the Year. Pressure exerted by America in 1854 caused Japan to open its doors after 260 years of isolation. Virtually uninhibited receptiveness to everything Western was the driving force behind the modernisation of Japan initiated by the Meiji government yet it also induced a rapid rediscovery of indigenous cultural values. At early Paris and London international exhibitions, the Japanese decorative and applied arts sparked off the Western fascination with all things Japanese – japonisme.
