Surrealism was one of the most influential art movements of the twentieth century. This book examines the dialogue between Surrealism and design and, for the first time, reveals the enormous influence the movement has had on design over the last hundred years. It has encouraged designers to question the reality beyond what is visible and to design objects that offer resistance, undermine routine, and disrupt the quotidian. The spectrum of examples ranges from Duchamp’s ready-mades and Dalí’s sensual object sculptures to works by designers like Carlo Mollino or Gae Aulenti and includes current designs that analyse new technologies or gender roles in subversive ways. Evidently, Surrealism has lost none of its relevance — for art as well as for design.

With works by Gae Aulenti, André Breton, Achille Castiglioni, Le Corbusier, Salvador Dalí, Marcel Duchamp, Dunne & Raby, Ray Eames, Max Ernst, Front Design, Iris van Herpen, Friedrich Kiesler, Shiro Kuramata, René Magritte, Lee Miller, Carlo Mollino, Isamu Noguchi, Odd Matter, Meret Oppenheim, Mimi Parent, Gaetano Pesce, Man Ray, Robert Stadler, Studio Wieki Somers, among others.

A rich, vibrantly illustrated account of the history and sources of manga

Manga has attained phenomenal worldwide success in recent years, and shows no signs of slowing down. As contemporary as this graphic artform may appear to readers outside of Japan, manga is the fruit of a long artistic tradition. Manga as we know it today is deeply rooted in ancient Japanese culture, and traces can be found in seventh-century temple paintings, folding screens decorated with comical characters, and painted scrolls. The more familiar manga comics of today, aimed at a broad audience of adults as well as children, echo similar themes and draw on narrative forms from throughout Japan’s rich history.

This book spans the history of manga in all its splendour and diversity. From Hokusai’s seminal Manga of 1814 to the genre-shaping works of Tezuka Osamu, from the friendly ghosts and monsters created by Mizuki Shigeru to huge franchises such as One Piece and Demon Slayer, every period is covered. One Thousand Years of Manga is both a rich documentary account and a visual delight packed with over 400 illustrations, demonstrating how this mass-produced medium has become a key facet of Japanese culture that is now enjoyed across the globe.

Contents List:

1. The Origins of Manga
2. The Magic of the Scroll: From the Earliest Caricatures to the Onset of the Comic Strip
3. The Birth of the Japanese Print: The Golden Age of Caricature
4. The Dawn of a New Type of Caricature: Japan Opens Up to the West
5. The Rise of the Comic Strip to the Second World War
6. Tezuka Osamu: The ‘God’ of the Modern Manga
7. Manga Today
8. Selected Portraits of Manga Artists
9. From Manga to Anime: The Work of Studio Ghibli
10. Reciprocal Influences

About the Author:

Brigitte Koyama-Richard is a professor of comparative literature and art history at Musashi University in Tokyo. She has published several works on Japan, including L’Animation japonaise, and she regularly works with Les Nouvelles éditions de la Scala specializing in Art and Japanese culture.

_________

In recent years, Manga has seen phenomenal success, not only in Japan, where it dominates the publishing industry, but also in the West, where it is steadily growing in popularity and influence. As swift and sudden as the popularity of this graphic art form may seem, Manga has, in fact, deep roots in Japanese culture, drawing on centuries-old artistic traditions. As early as the twelfth century, Emakimono scrolls existed, a narrative form in which stories of all kinds - romantic, fantastic, even comic - were told through the combined use of text and illustration. Japanese art continued to change as profound political, social, and economic transformations remade the country in the centuries to follow. Today there is little doubt as to the meaning of the term Manga - nor to the astonishing popularity of the form - but few in the West understand the long artistic history that gave birth to this phenomenon and the social factors that continue to shape it today. One Thousand Years of Manga is both an informative account of the genesis of the form and a visual delight.

Through its captivating illustrations and enlightening text, the book situates Manga in its proper context, appreciating it for what it truly is: an integral part of Japanese art and culture that is as rich and revealing as it is popular.

The COVID-19 outbreak has changed the world with enormous effects on politics and society. Can we manage this global challenge?

The coronavirus pandemic has caused unprecedented stress tests for the healthcare system and an enormous challenge for politics and society, resulting in unforeseeable effects on the economy.

Cartoonists from all over the world have had their own take on the crisis. Their drawings and paintings in this illustrated book comment on topical events - straight to the point and with a good dose of humor. The lockdown created funny behaviors: hoarding of toilet paper and DIY haircuts as well as video conferencing in sweatpants.

Unfortunately, social isolation, fear of the future, and economic losses due to short-time working are also part of our new everyday life. The crisis shows which professions are essential to the economic system. Social imbalances and inequalities are becoming abundantly clear. At the same time, issues that demanded urgent action before the outbreak of the virus seems to be forgotten, like the refugee crisis, global warming, and the world economic crisis.

Paper. Pen. Pandemic. critically comments on the current situation and makes us rethink our priorities!

Pasolini’s work ― rife with classical art references ― continues to inspire filmmakers and artists today.

After his formative years studying art history, Pier Paolo Pasolini used cinema as a sounding board for his political ideas. This book ― and the accompanying exhibition (Nouveau Musée National de Monaco, March 29–September 29, 2024) ― juxtaposes film stills with paintings by masters such as Giorgio Morandi, Fernand Léger, and Francis Bacon to demonstrate how classical and contemporary art influenced the aesthetics of his films. The book includes works by thirty contemporary artists including John Waters, Jenny Holzer, and William Kentridge to demonstrate Pasolini’s lasting influence on the art world.

Though Pier Paolo Pasolini always defined himself as a writer, he became world famous as a filmmaker. This book and the accompanying exhibition presented at the Nouveau Musée National de Monaco focus on the latter aspect of his work. They explore how classical and contemporary art influenced the aesthetic of Pasolini’s films, and how, in turn, his cinematic aesthetic continues to inspire the artists of our time.

The dazzling life story of the quintessential painter of the Art Deco twenties - as she told it to her own daughter

Illustrated with vibrant colour reproductions of Lempicka's finest works, and exclusive family photos. Out of print for ten years, now back in print in a handsome yet affordable hardcover edition. This edition includes a new chapter about Lempicka's legacy by her granddaughter and great-granddaughter. We've entered the centennial of the 1920s, and interest in Lempicka is high: her paintings continue to smash auction records, and her life is the subject of a new musical.

An attractive new hardcover edition of the classic biography of Tamara de Lempicka, whose paintings defined Art Deco and whose life epitomised the Jazz Age.

As F. Scott Fitzgerald portrayed the mad glories of the 1920s on the printed page, Tamara de Lempicka (1898-1980) captured them on canvas. A seductive Garbo-esque beauty with an irresistible force of personality, this refugee of the Russian Revolution successively conquered Paris, Hollywood, and New York with coruscating portraits of the world's rich and famous. Her Art Deco paintings earned for her a life more fabulously excessive than anything Fitzgerald dreamed of.

Passion by Design, authored by Tamara de Lempicka's own daughter, is an intimate look at a fascinating personality, and remains the best account of her life and work. This new edition is illustrated with vibrant colour reproductions of her finest paintings, as well as exclusive photographs from family albums. An additional chapter by Victoria de Lempicka, the artist's granddaughter, explores the ever-evolving legacy of Tamara de Lempicka, from the record eight-figure price fetched by her painting La Tunique Rose in November 2019 to the new musical based on her life.

About the Author:

Baroness Kizette de Lempicka-Foxhall, the daughter of Tamara de Lempicka, enjoyed an unequalled firsthand knowledge of her mother's life and exclusive access to her papers.
