The Art of Fine Gifts: a new title in our bestselling large format series, Street Art is a fantastic foray into the unique and extremely creative world of this art form.

The explosion of graffiti-styled street art in the early 1980s has continued to be a popular form of self-expression. By choosing public places to display their artwork, artists can achieve a more direct communication with the public, as opposed to being confined to the more formal art world.

This exciting new book includes over 170 photographs of expressive and unconventional street art images from around the world, as well as a fascinating discussion of the styles, techniques and inspirations of both infamous artists and unknown talents. From mind-boggling illusions to satirical depictions, this book will have you looking on in awe.

Street Craft is the next chapter in the story of Street Art. From urban crochet to street sculpture, light projections, miniature installations and more, this book brings together artists whose creations are transforming cities around the world.

Twenty-eight entries each offer a short profile of one artist followed by a first-person reflection on what motivates their creativity – and what creativity!

- Tasha Lewis’s blue butterfly swarms bring beauty to derelict corners of New York
- Spidertag intertwines sturdy rope and nails to construct abstract graffiti in Madrid
- Mademoiselle Maurice’s origami and lace graffiti bring a light touch to the streets of Paris and Hong Kong

250 illustrations emphasize the sheer visual variety of these works, from the dark and moody to the bright and cheerful.

A unique typographical sourcebook featuring over 150 specially designed, original alphabets exclusive to this book

Classic graffiti lettering and experimental typographical forms lie at the heart of street culture and have long inspired designers in many different fields. But graffiti artists, who tend to paint the same letters of their tag again and again, rarely design complete alphabets.

Claudia Walde spent over two years collecting alphabets by 154 artists from thirty countries to show the many different styles and approaches to lettering within the graffiti and street art cultures. All of the artists have roots in graffiti. Some are world-renowned, such as 123 Klan (Canada), Faith47 (South Africa), and Hera (Germany); others are lesser-known or only now starting to emerge.

Each artist received the same instructions: design all 26 letters of the Latin alphabet within the limits of a single page of the book. How they approached this task and selected the media with which to express their ideas was entirely up to them, and the results encompass not just street art but sketches, sculpture, digital art, and photography.

This highly original book will inspire fans of street culture as well as typographers, graphic designers, advertising and communication students and design professionals worldwide.

A magnificent catalogue of the V&A's collection of twentieth-century and contemporary British ceramics

Contemporary ceramicists working in Britain, including Rachel Kneebone, Grayson Perry and Edmund de Waal, are part of a broader international group of artists experimenting with clay, considering how it intersects and works in dialogue with other art forms and with culture at large. Recent experimentation with the medium owes much to the rapid evolution of ceramics into an expanded field, and to the work of mid- to late 20th-century potters and their reinvention of ceramics as a radical and contemporary art practice. The pioneering methods and rethinking of form in the work of exponents such as Bernard Leach, Michael Cardew, Lucie Rie, Hans Coper and Alan Caiger-Smith – whose reference points were drawn from East Asia, Africa, the ancient Mediterranean and the Middle East as much as from their own heritage – continue to influence and inspire contemporary makers. In his introductory essay, Alun Graves, Senior Curator at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, provides all lovers of ceramics – collectors, practitioners, historians and those interested in modern and contemporary art and crafts – with the historical context, documenting the medium’s shift into an expressive, and sometimes interventionist, art form. An extensive visual catalogue, Studio Ceramics is the primary reference for 20th-century and contemporary British studio ceramics, and a record of the national collection of British ceramics held at the V&A.

Contents List:

Eerie tales of Japanese goblins, ghosts and magic — beautifully illustrated by contemporary Japanese yokai artist Sakyu!

This collection of fifteen chilling tales brings to life a world where the supernatural and earthly realms are seamlessly entwined. The ghosts, goblins and magical creatures in its pages are by turns mischievous, terrifying, protective and tender. Included in this anthology are:

- "The Badger Haunted Temple": A brazen group of friends attempts to rid a temple of a gluttonous, shape-shifting goblin who has taken up residence there
- "A Cherry Flower Idyll": A young man falls in love with the ethereal spirit of a cherry blossom tree and vows to find her in the mortal world
- "The Story of Mimi Nashi Hoichi": A blind bard is summoned to recite the tale of a famous battle to the ghosts of its victims, only to find that his own life is at risk
- And twelve other supernatural tales, including several that rarely appear in English!

About the Author:

Lafcadio Hearn was one of the earliest Western writers to publish stories and essays about supernatural Japan. He arrived in Japan in 1890 and fell in love with the country and its people. After marrying a samurai's daughter, he became a Japanese citizen and changed his name to Yakumo Koizumi. He began publishing books on Japan in 1894, soon becoming known as the great interpreter of all things Japanese to the West.

Yei Theodora Ozaki was born in Victorian England to a Japanese father and an English mother. After her parents' marriage ended, Ozaki began to travel the world, and retell in English the traditional Japanese stories she loved. She later married Yukio Ozaki, a Japanese politician, and went on to publish several collections of Japanese folk tales.

Sakyu is an illustrator based in Osaka whose work frequently depicts yokai and other supernatural beings. Blending traditional styles with modern content, she brings humorous insights to contemporary life in Japan. Since graduating from Kyoto Saga University of Arts, her work has appeared in museums in Japan and abroad, including the Museum of International Folk Art exhibit "Yokai: Ghosts & Demons of Japan," and the video game Samurai Bringer.

The first major U.S. monograph in ten years on Murakami is the definitive survey of the paintings of one of today’s most influential artists.

Takashi Murakami (b. 1962), one of contemporary art’s most widely recognized exponents, receives a long-awaited critical consideration in this important volume. Accompanying the first retrospective exhibition devoted solely to Murakami’s paintings, this book traces Murakami’s career from his earliest training to his current studio practice.

Where other books address the commercial aspects of Murakami’s work, this is the first serious survey of his work as a painter. Through essays and illustrations — many previously unpublished — it explores the artist’s relationship to the tradition of Japanese painting and his facility in straddling high and low, ancient and modern, Eastern and Western, commercial and high art. New texts address Murakami’s output in the context of postwar Japan, situating the artist in relation to folklore, traditional Japanese painting, the Tokyo art scene in the 1980s and 1990s, and the threat of nuclear annihilation. This richly illustrated volume also includes a detailed biography and exhibition history. Takashi Murakami is a true essential for collectors and fans alike.

About the Authors:

Madeleine Grynsztejn is the Pritzker Director and Michael Darling is the James W. Alsdorf Chief Curator of the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago. Michael Dylan Foster is associate professor at Indiana University at Bloomington. Chelsea Foxwell is assistant professor at the University of Chicago. Reuben Keehan is curator at Queensland Art Gallery/Gallery of Modern Art in Brisbane, Australia. Akira Mizuta Lippit is professor and chair at the University of Southern California Dornsife College. Nobuo Tsuji is an independent scholar, author, and authority on Japanese aesthetics.

No understanding of Chinese civilisation is possible without a grasp of Taoism, the philosophy that has shaped not just Chinese spirituality but also art, science and politics. And it was in the Tao Te Ching, written around 300BC, that the fundamental beliefs of Taoism were first gathered. This short, wise but very humble book went on to influence on philosophy, religion and politics. In a compellingly simple rhetorical style, the book addresses how to live a simple, peaceful and harmonious life, how to rid oneself of desires and free society of institutions that promote greed.

This dual-language edition of Tao Te Ching presents the original Chinese characters with a new translation on the facing page, and is illustrated throughout to make an attractive gift edition in traditional Chinese hand binding. With a new introduction that discusses the questioned authorship of the text and editorial notes, all 81 brief chapters are included, ranging from advice for politicians to wise words for the everyday person. Of immense influence across millennia, Tao Te Ching Illustrated is a classic text richly deserving of this exquisite edition.

About the Author:

Lao Tzu, or Laozi, is an honorific title meaning ‘Old Master’, and it is unlikely that the Tao Te Ching or Daodejing was written by one person, but if he did exist, his name was Li Er. Traditionally written in the sixth century BCE, there are a number of ancient text sources that have been used to compile this version.

Used for self-exploration or divination, Tarot has, for more than a 500 years, been the most popular and accessible of all esoteric tools, looming large in today’s mainstream culture. Why? Because the cards are inexpensive and easy to carry — a perfect traveling companion and, therefore, an invitation to a journey inward and out.

Humans are drawn to playing games and feel driven to find meaning in the chaos of paradoxical signs. The vivid iconography of the “arcanas” speak to us like no other language, moving us to the core, weaving through each cards a universal story, a metaphorical pathway of transformation.

This 400 page book presents for the first time a close look at 500 years of figurative card decks created or used for fortune telling, divinations, and oracle purposes and will explore, one card at the time, their iconographic roots at the cross-roads of the medieval imaginarium, Western esoteric wisdom, folklore, and also contemporary art and pop culture.

With hundreds of images drawn from more than 100 decks, rarely published and often forgotten in library archives, it will offer the first visual history of tarot.

About the Author:

French-born Laetitia Barbier is an independent scholar and curator, as well as a professional tarot reader and teacher. She earned a bachelor’s degree in art history at the Sorbonne in Paris. Barbier has worked with Morbid Anatomy as the programming director and head librarian since 2012. Her work has been featured in Atlas Obscura, Vice, and in Death: A Graveside Companion (Thames & Hudson). Barbier shares her love for tarot and obscure fortune telling decks and techniques through her Instagram account, where she has nearly 40,000 followers.

Discover the story of colour through the significant scientific discoveries and key artist’s works over 400 years.

From Isaac Newton’s investigations through to Olafur Eliasson’s experiential creations, this stunning book documents the fascinating story of colour with an extraordinary collection of original colour material that includes charts, wheels, artists’ palettes, swatches and schemes.

“In 1704, the scientist Isaac Newton published Opticks, the result of many years of researching light and colour. By splitting white light, Newton identified the visible range of colours, or the rainbow spectrum. In Opticks, he built a colour system around his findings, and he visualised this system in a circular shape, making it one of the first printed colour wheels.
The influence of Newton and his followers, combined with the invention of many new pigments as well as watercolours in moist cake form, had made painting with colour an exciting occupation not just for serious artists but also for a much wider audience. The colour revolution had begun.”

1. Unravelling the Rainbow: The Eighteenth-Century Colour Revolution
2. Romantic Ideas & New Technologies: The Early Nineteenth Century
