Squaring the Square

From 1923 onwards he taught at the Bauhaus, and continued to do so after his emigration to the USA in 1933 at Black Mountain College in North Carolina, and at Yale University, where he worked on his Homage to the Square from 1950 until his death. 

Heinz Liesbrock (*1953) was the long-standing director of the Josef Albers Museum Quadrat in Bottrop. He has written extensively on Albers and his influence on art history.

Stephen Robeson Miller has written extensively about Kay Sage and her art in publications such as Art International, Dada & Surrealism, and various galleries catalogues around the world. He was co-curator of the landmark traveling exhibition Double Solitaire: The Surreal Worlds of Kay Sage and Yves Tanguy in 2011. He is also the author of Kay Sage: The Biographical Chronology and Four Surrealist One-Act Plays. His research papers on Sage, including interviews, are located at the Archives of American Art, Smithsonian Institution.

Mary Ann Caws is Distinguished Professor Emerita of Comparative Literature, English, and French and Resident Professor at the Graduate School of the City University of New York. She is an Officier of the Palmes académiques, a Chevalier dans l'ordre des Arts et des Lettres, and a recipient of the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. During the 1980s, Haring achieved international recognition and participated in numerous group and solo exhibitions. After contracting HIV in 1988, he focused his activism on the AIDS crisis. Less than two years later, Haring died of an AIDS-related illness.

Kiki McDonough is a fifth-generation jeweller and leading female British designer, whose eponymous fine jewellery brand is renowned for showcasing vibrant gemstones in timeless and wearable designs. A lavish survey of the Khalili Collection’s world-renowned holdings of traditional Japanese kimono, from the Edo period to the 20th century.

The Khalili Collection of kimonos comprises over 200 garments spanning 300 years of Japanese textile artistry. The form of the T-shaped, straight-seamed, front-wrapping kimono has changed very little over the centuries, yet the collection reveals an astonishing variety of designs. The garments presented here convey the remarkable creativity of designers who produced works of art that would enfold the wearer. The enormous range of patterns were executed in a complex combination of techniques, with some garments requiring the expert skills of a number of different artisans.

The Khalili Collection includes formal, semi-formal and informal kimono, underkimono and jackets, worn by women, men and children. Represented are the sophisticated garments of the samurai elite and the affluent merchant classes of the Edo period (1603– 1868), the shifting styles and new colour palette of Meiji-period dress (1868–1912) and particularly the bold and dazzling kimono of the Taisho- (1912–26) and early Sho-wa (1926–89) eras, which utilized innovative techniques and drew fresh inspiration from both past traditions and the modern world.

The Kunstmuseum Bern owns one of the most important art collections in Switzerland. Since the foundation of the Staatliche Kunstsammlung in Bern in 1809 and the opening of the first museum building in 1879 the collection has grown continuously and has attained world renown. A saucy, light-hearted look at life in Paris before the Great War, when life was enjoyed to the full and the pursuit of the grisette was high on the list of male preoccupations.

La Vie Parisienne was the magical name of a journal, which proclaimed itself proudly as the masthead of a way of life where frivolity, wit and satire were as important and relevant as literary and political intellectualism. The well-loved weekly attempted a fresh mix of humorous cartoons, short stories, sharp tales of fashion-folk, up-to-the-minute gossip about prominent persons, columns of aphorisms on such subjects as marriage ("Marriage is the only painful operation for which no anaesthetic is allowed") or love ("Without jealousy the most violent passions would not last a week"), fashion-orientated banter set out as pages of dialogue, and acid comments about all. Somewhat surprisingly, the mixture took. Founded in 1863, Parisians bought it in sufficient numbers week after week to ensure its survival for over a century.

This was an age when women were frivolous and uninhibited, and when drawing reigned supreme. The result is an amusing, delightful book to be enjoyed and shared. It is a microcosm of a period when life was unashamedly fun.
