Thinking the Unthinkable documents Jim Shaw’s inaugural exhibition with Gagosian and features an essay by Jessica Beck, new fiction from Jonathan Lethem, and a conversation between the artist and Rachel Kushner.

For over three decades, Jim Shaw has found inspiration in comics, pulp novels, album covers, and amateur paintings. His densely layered and humorous works span painting, drawing, and sculpture, and juxtapose images of friends, family, and dreams, with world events, pop culture, and alternative realities.

Published to coincide with Thinking the Unthinkable (2023) in Beverly Hills, Shaw’s first exhibition with Gagosian, this expansive and vibrantly illustrated catalogue delves into the secret histories of psychedelic therapy, Hollywood legend, and nuclear war—themes that all coalesce in the artist’s recent works.

An essay by Gagosian director Jessica Beck discusses Shaw’s hallucinogenic depictions of Cary Grant, Esther Williams, and Jeff Chandler. A conversation with author Rachel Kushner ranges from the artist’s formative years to the early weaponization of LSD. In Jim Shaw Kills, new fiction written by Jonathan Lethem, a miniaturized version of Shaw is dispatched into the comatose body of an ex-president.

About the Authors:

Jim Shaw (b. 1952) lives and works in Los Angeles. He has had exhibitions at museums including CAPC musée d'art contemporain de Bordeaux, France; MASS MoCA, North Adams, MA; and New Museum, New York. His work is held in the collections of the Hammer Museum, Los Angeles; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; Museum of Modern Art, New York; Museo Jumex, Mexico City; and Centre Pompidou, Paris, amongst others.

Jessica Beck is a director at Gagosian. Formerly, she was the Milton Fine curator of art at the Andy Warhol Museum, Pittsburgh, where she curated many projects, most notably Andy Warhol: My Perfect Body (2016).

Rachel Kushner is the author of Telex from Cuba (2008), The Flamethrowers (2013), and The Mars Room (2018). She won the Prix Médicis Etranger (2018), was a Guggenheim Fellow (2013), and the recipient of the Harold D. Vursell Memorial Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters (2016).

Jonathan Lethem is a novelist, essayist, and short story writer. He is the author of The Fortress of Solitude (2003), Chronic City (2009), The Feral Detective (2018), and The Arrest (2020).

A revealing look at the evolution of male iconography in the work of one of the foremost painters of his generation.

Since raising the ire of the early-1990s arts establishment with his deliberately provocative portrayals of women, John Currin has been best known for his brazen, militantly incorrect female iconography. Yet Currin has represented a range of masculine identities throughout his career as well.

This volume is the first to focus exclusively on this aspect of his work, examining the evolution of his equally provocative depictions of men. It ranges from little-known early works on paper and a series of kitschy paintings of men with beards to signature eccentric figures such as the elderly reader in the painting 2070 (2005) and his more baroque genre scenes featuring male couples. The first comprehensive monograph on the master contemporary Korean American sculptor, from his seminal wire sculptures to his never-before-seen early works formed of steel.

John Pai (b. 1937) is a prolific multimedia artist whose handmade three-dimensional sculptures are, paradoxically, still objects that seem to exist in a state of movement and transformation. This full-career survey of Pai’s inventive work consists of his rarely seen early work up to the present.

Pai’s incredibly intricate, three-dimensional abstract “drawings in space” are made of endless lengths of individual steel or copper rods and textured sheets made from hundreds of rods welded together. Unlike many contemporary sculptors who draw a sketch and let metalworkers do the actual construction, Pai continues to do all his work himself ― from choosing the materials to the labor-intensive process of welding and bending the metals into complex and sometimes massive forms.

Immigrating from Korea to the US at age 11, Pai showed his prodigious talent for art at a young age. He received a scholarship to attend Pratt Institute, and in the 1960s, Pai became the youngest professor appointed to the faculty at Pratt. Leading its fine arts and sculpture programs for nearly four decades, Pai proved a talented and beloved educator, nurturing generations of sculptors and fostering the burgeoning Korean artistic community in New York with those such as his contemporary Nam June Paik, reflecting a sensibility outside the mainstream of American art.

John Yau is an award-winning poet and art critic who has been publishing art criticism since 1978. He is a professor of critical studies at Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University. Squaring the Square

He was co-curator of the landmark traveling exhibition Double Solitaire: The Surreal Worlds of Kay Sage and Yves Tanguy in 2011. He is also the author of Kay Sage: The Biographical Chronology and Four Surrealist One-Act Plays. His research papers on Sage, including interviews, are located at the Archives of American Art, Smithsonian Institution.

Mary Ann Caws is Distinguished Professor Emerita of Comparative Literature, English, and French and Resident Professor at the Graduate School of the City University of New York. She is an Officier of the Palmes académiques, a Chevalier dans l'ordre des Arts et des Lettres, and a recipient of the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. A lavish survey of the Khalili Collection’s world-renowned holdings of traditional Japanese kimono, from the Edo period to the 20th century.

The Khalili Collection of kimonos comprises over 200 garments spanning 300 years of Japanese textile artistry. The form of the T-shaped, straight-seamed, front-wrapping kimono has changed very little over the centuries, yet the collection reveals an astonishing variety of designs. The garments presented here convey the remarkable creativity of designers who produced works of art that would enfold the wearer. The enormous range of patterns were executed in a complex combination of techniques, with some garments requiring the expert skills of a number of different artisans.

The Khalili Collection includes formal, semi-formal and informal kimono, underkimono and jackets, worn by women, men and children. Represented are the sophisticated garments of the samurai elite and the affluent merchant classes of the Edo period (1603– 1868), the shifting styles and new colour palette of Meiji-period dress (1868–1912) and particularly the bold and dazzling kimono of the Taisho- (1912–26) and early Sho-wa (1926–89) eras, which utilized innovative techniques and drew fresh inspiration from both past traditions and the modern world.
