These sketchbooks explode with creativity and originality!

Here is privileged access to the sketchbooks of some of the world’s leading street and graffiti artists. These are very private spaces, often reserved for a handful of friends.

The book showcases an incredible diversity of working methods, innovative approaches and personal fixations, typographic explorations, alter egos, storyboards, mythological creatures, anatomical studies, architectural drawings and extreme doodling.

Over 65 artists worldwide are represented, including Banksy (UK), A. J. Purdy (USA), Eroné (France), Joska (Germany), Microbo (Italy), Laguna (Spain), Bfree (Holland), Ekta (Sweden), Neb (Belgium) and Zbiok (Poland). They work across different media, including illustration, painting, design and animation, but graffiti and street art are common links between many of them.

A collector’s book featuring extremely rare and historically important skateboards from all corners of the globe, Surf to Skate captures the art and craftsmanship of the early movement. Authors Stanton Hartsfield and Jason Cohn, known collectively as Scavenger, have curated the pages in a timeline, tracing the very roots of skateboarding from steel roller skate wheels nailed to planks in the 1950s to their clay-wheeled cousins of the 1960s.

For many, this book will be a trip down memory lane. For others, it will give a good sense of the genesis and early roots of the history of the skateboard. Chapters include “Shop Boards,” with distinctive, early iterations of decks by Hobie, Makaha, and Val Surf, “Paradise,” reflecting the ongoing infatuation with all things Hawaiian from Tiki motifs to Hawaii 5-0, and the midcentury fascination with the space race is embodied in the rocket-emblazoned boards within “Final Frontier.” With styles and influences ranging from artsy to advertising, Surf to Skate reflects not only the evolution of skateboarding, but American popular culture, in general.

This first monograph on the street artist Swoon is a crash course on the incredible range of her diverse artistic practices.

Filled with brilliant color photographs, the book brings reader to streets around the world to see her life-size prints and paper cutouts that transform as natural elements slowly erode and destroy them. It travels across the waters to include striking images from her most recent projects, Swimming Cities, which show a team of craftsmen and collaborators scavenging junk to create makeshift steamships that are part floating artwork, part performance, and part experiments in communal living. And it brings readers inside her art collective, Toyshop, which orchestrates organic public theater that includes everything from street parties to public demonstrations.

Woven together seamlessly, and accompanied by essays from fellow artists and famed gallery owner Jeffrey Deitch, this book showcases the work of one of the art world’s brightest stars.

Perhaps the largest exhibition of street art ever attempted, Tour Paris 13 is the culmination of a movement that always strives for new forms of involvement from the viewer. Housed in a now-demolished 1950s-era nine-story apartment block near the Seine, 105 artists of 18 different nationalities created unique works in the interior as well as on the exterior of the building, allowing visitors access for only thirty days. The result was a pure, immersive experience that allowed artists free reign to indulge their creativity in an environment of open-mindedness and without commodification.

This beautiful catalogue records the work of such urban art luminaries as A1One, Herbert Baglione, COPE2, Ethos, Peeta, Rea One, Seth, Stinkfish, Swoon, Vexta and Vhils.

The last outlaw of visual disciplines. Graffiti and unsanctioned art - from local origins to global phenomenon

In recent years street art has grown bolder, more ornate, more sophisticated and - in many cases - more acceptable. Yet unsanctioned public art remains the problem child of cultural expression, the last outlaw of visual disciplines. It has also become a global phenomenon of the 21st century.

Made in collaboration with featured artists, Trespass examines the rise and global reach of graffiti and urban art, tracing key figures, events and movements of self-expression in the city's social space, and the history of urban reclamation, protest, and illicit performance. The first book to present the full historical sweep, global reach and technical developments of the street art movement, Trespass features key works by 150 artists and connects four generations of visionary outlaws including Jean Tinguely, Spencer Tunick, Keith Haring, Os Gemeos, Jenny Holzer, Barry McGee, Gordon Matta-Clark, Shepard Fairey, Blu, Billboard Liberation Front, Guerrilla Girls and Banksy, among others. It also includes dozens of previously unpublished photographs of long-lost works and legendary, ephemeral urban artworks.

Also includes:
• Unpublished images of street art by Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat
• Unpublished photographs by Subway Art luminary Martha Cooper
• Unpublished photos from the personal archives of selected artists
• Incisive essays by Anne Pasternak (director of public arts fund Creative Time) and civil rights lawyer Tony Serra
• Special feature: exclusive preface by Banksy

The author:
Carlo McCormick is a pop culture critic, curator and Senior Editor of Paper magazine. His numerous books, monographs and catalogues include Beautiful Losers: Contemporary Art and Street Culture, The Downtown Book: The New York Art Scene 1974-1984, and Dondi White: Style Master General. His work has appeared in Art in America, Art News, Artforum and many other publications.

The curator:
Marc and Sara Schiller founded Wooster Collective in 2001, a website that celebrates and plays a crucial role in documenting otherwise ephemeral street art. Based in New York City, the collective curated most of the contemporary images in Trespass. Its "Wooster On Paper" series presents the work of international artists in limited edition books.

The editor:
Ethel Seno received her BA in the College of Letters from Wesleyan University before teaming with TASCHEN, where she worked with William Claxton on Jazzlife and New Orleans 1960, and David LaChapelle on Artists & Prostitutes and Heaven to Hell. Having grown up in Tokyo, she feels most at home in urban environments and currently resides in Los Angeles.

Not to be filed under history, photography, design or non-fiction, as it contains outright lies and outrageous subjective opinion, this book is definitely about street art. It is also about now. Fungus grows on your collected wild-style pioneers. Vile passions rage between old schools and new.

Stuff flies out from under the hammer at auction houses and property developers fund street art shows to liberal press fanfare.

Oh, and Banksy hits the West Bank. Is anyone taking this thing seriously?
Should it be taken seriously?
Is it all just an immense daisy chain of poker faces, irony and mind games?

Urban Guerrilla Protest showcases the ways and means of individual, subversive protest actions. Featuring over 90 artists and initiatives from around the world, the book provides insights into the resources that are being used to place activist messages in the heart of the everyday, documenting the rise of the media-guerrilla during the decade spanning 1995-2005. All over the world, activists have disseminated their messages using an array of methods targeted to grab the attention of the public, as well as the perpetrators of the actions that have instigated the protestors.

Berlin-based graphic designer Ake Rudolf has compiled an international collection of successful and poignant actions; its design and bilingual English/German layout is an homage to the Do It Yourself attitude that all of the examples champion in the name of questioning corporate hegemony. Examinations of Reverend Billy, the Yes Men, The Institute for Applied Autonomy, The Billboard Liberation Front, The Ruckus Society, Yomango, Surveillance Camera Players and more than 90 other examples from all over the US, UK, Australia, China, Argentina and elsewhere illuminate how these messages are heard, and in many cases incite change.

In the words of Rudolf: “Subversive communication practices mediate disobedience and visual subordination. They create new meaning, providing the public with new perspectives for how they view the world, which all too often differs from how huge corporations want the public to view the world.”

Evolving from graffiti and street art, urban interventions are the next generation of artwork to hit public space. Using any and all of the components that make up urban and rural landscapes, these mostly spatial interventions bring art to the masses.

They turn the street into a studio, laboratory, club, and gallery. Modified traffic signs, swings at bus stops, and images created out of sand or snow challenge us to rediscover our environment and interact with it in new ways. The work is an intelligent and critical commentary on the planning, use, and commercialization of public space. With a rich visual selection of projects and methods, Urban Interventions documents this new artistic approach to urban art that is currently making a profound mark on our contemporary visual language.

The book shows the growing connections and interplay of this scene with art, architecture, performance, and installation. Propagators of urban intervention surprise and provoke with work in cities including New York and London, but also in countries such as China, Columbia, and Turkey. Everywhere the work appears it turns public spaces into individual experiences. Urban Interventions is the first book to document these very current, personal art projects in a comprehensive way.

Street Art in a New Outfit

The latest urban street art doesn’t involve paint cans, stickers or wallpaper paste - but knitting needles and wool - as can be seen in this book filled with eye-popping images.

Vandal Squad: Inside the New York City Transit Police Department, 1984-2004 has caused consternation throughout the global graffiti community with charges that author Joseph Rivera is profiting off the very criminals he spent his career incarcerating.

Graffiti writers have left a vivid trail and told their spellbinding tales the world over in countless books and magazines, films and videos, websites and events. They have shared stories of war and glory, of battles and triumphs, and have the pictures to prove it. But many have gone down for those ups; they've been caught in action or hunted as criminals, and brought forth to answer for crimes of vandalism. They've copped pleas or pleaded guilty outright; they've been sentenced to do community service, to pay fines, and sometimes even to serve jail time yet more often than not they got right back in action. No one knew this better than the New York City Transit Police Vandal Squad.

Founded in 1980, the Vandal Squad's mission was to protect the subway system from hardcore criminal acts of destruction like kicking out windows and throwing seats out of train cars. It was only with the Clean Car Program of 1984 that graffiti became the primary focus of this specialized Unit. On a mission to catch those who gained fame under tag names, the Vandal Squad had to identify and locate these individuals cloaked in anonymity (and often so transient they were referred as "ghosts") using every means available, including the NYPD computer database, Search Warrants, subpoenas, and even vandals themselves.

In Vandal Squad: Inside the New York City Transit Police Department, 1984-2004, former member Officer Joseph Rivera recounts the days and nights spent in pursuit of some of New York City's most notorious vandals. The only book on graffiti told from the perspective of law enforcement, Vandal Squad takes us inside the New York Police Department. Rivera's fast-paced tales of cat and mouse are presented alongside professional disregard within the Department. Featuring never-before-seen photographs and stories of graffiti's infamous Top 40, Vandal Squad offers an unprecedented look at the graffiti world from the other side of the game.

From the Impressionists to the present day; from the cut-up Cubist collages of Picasso to the monumental filmic narratives of Fiona Banner; from the subversive schoolboy script of Magritte to the demotic scrawl of Cy Twombly, Writing on the Wall shows how artists have responded to an environment increasingly saturated with words, and how the mass media have adopted and adapted artistic devices in typography, propaganda and advertising.

This groundbreaking study explores the strange, unsettling and often humorous results when words escape their traditional confines and begin to inhabit artworks: it ends with an analysis of current developments in the world of hypertext, where word and image have at last found a more essential unity.
