A fascinating panorama of the faces of Jesus today

Jesus Now presents, for the first time, a showcase of the figure of Christ in contemporary art, graphic design, advertising, and pop culture. Featuring the work of more than 80 artists from around the world, including Cindy Sherman, David LaChapelle, Kehinde Wiley, Pierre et Gilles, Nina Chanel, Mark Ryden, and Alex Grey, Jesus Now shows how the Christ figure continues to inspire the artists of today.
In trendy galleries, on the walls of major cities, as a superhero or manga character, in Hollywood blockbusters or in satirical TV cartoons, Jesus is not only a guide for believers but also has become, as this book reveals, an icon of modern pop culture.
This art anthology also showcases how today's artists have developed new iconographies that break with the image of the White Messiah to favor depicting Jesus in a more historically accurate way or in ways more reflective of themselves: Black Jesus, Maori Jesus, Native American Jesus.

If all of the murals of New York City were under one roof, it would be the greatest collection of populist art in America. MURALS OF NEW YORK CITY is the first book to curate over thirty of the most important, influential, and impressive murals found within all five boroughs. The murals featured in this volume act as both an artistic and cultural guide to New York and its citizens over the past 100+ years — from the Victorian sensibilities of the 1900’s, to the New Deal outlook of the WPA-commissioned artworks, to the graffiti-inflected art of Keith Haring and Barry McGee.  The book enlightens readers with the lively back stories of those who commissioned and created these murals, and documents the works through extensive original photography that shows both the murals in context, and with details that highlight the artistic hand of the muralists.

From courthouses, to libraries, to schoolrooms, to classic hotel watering holes, MURALS OF NEW YORK CITY introduces readers to a wide range of cultural icons and artistic treasures. Full-color images of works by the world's most celebrated artists including Marc Chagall, Roy Lichtenstein, Maxfield Parrish, and more are accompanied by informative and historical commentary. MURALS OF NEW YORK CITY is perfect for art and architecture lovers and serves as a resource for New Yorkers, and a souvenir for the millions of tourists who visit the city every year. Martha Cooper, Roger Gastman
ID: 15084
Видавництво: Prestel

Culled from the extensive archives of one of the most renowned graffiti photographers of all time comes this remarkable collection of previously unpublished images of New York’s graffiti scene in the 1980s.

If you were a graffiti writer in 1980s New York City, you wanted Martha Cooper to document your work — and she probably did. Cooper has spent decades immortalizing art that is often overlooked, and usually illegal. Her first book, 1984’s »Subway Art« (a collaboration with Henry Chalfant), is affectionately referred to by graffiti artists as the »bible«. To create »Spray Nation«, Cooper and editor Roger Gastman pored through hundreds of thousands of 35mm Kodachrome slides, painstakingly selecting and digitizing them. The photos range from obscure tags to intimate portraits, action shots, walls, and subway cars painted inside and out. They are accompanied by heartfelt essays celebrating Cooper’s drive, spirit, and singular vision. The images capture a gritty New York era that is gone forever. And although the original pieces (as well as many of their creators) have been lost, these resplendent photos feel as immediate and powerful as a subway train thundering down the tracks.

About the Authors:

Martha Cooper has been a professional photographer for over 50 years. In addition to »Subway Art«, she has published numerous other photo books. Her work has been exhibited in museums and galleries worldwide.

Roger Gastman is a collector, as well as the curator and founder of Beyond the Street, an organization that creates large-scale exhibitions of street art. He is also an accomplished filmmaker and has authored well over 60 books on the subjects of graffiti and street art.
