ID: 17903
Издательство: Silvana Editoriale

A colossal expedition into the mind of Tim Burton through over 200 pieces of rare and unpublished behind-the-scenes materials

From Beetlejuice to Batman, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory to Alice in Wonderland and beyond, Tim Burton has made an indelible mark on cinema across horror, drama and fantasy films with his uncanny, whimsical style. Since his youth, he has created a thematic repository of popular culture, comics, fairy tales, Old Hollywood films and more, the elements of which he intersperses into his movies.

The major, immersive exhibition at the Museo del Cinema in Turin, and its corresponding catalog, honors Burton’s unique vision and artistic output. Divided into nine thematic sections, the catalog features over 200 examples of rarely or never-before-seen original artworks spanning Burton’s entire lifetime: including early sketches from his childhood, paintings, drawings, photographs, concept art, storyboards, costumes, moving-image works, maquettes, puppets and life-size sculptural installations. This archival material honors Burton’s signature style but also reveals his appreciation of the work of previous generations, including the drawings of Edward Gorey and Charles Addams, the horror films of Vincent Price and Japanese monster movies. The World of Tim Burton creates an autobiography told through his creative process, tracing the singular visual imagination of a multidimensional postmodern artist.

Tim Burton (born 1958) grew up in Burbank, California and studied animation at the California Institute of the Arts. Fired from Disney after making Frankenweenie, Burton was approached by Paul Reubens to direct Pee-wee’s Big Adventure, which became his first major hit. Since then he has directed dozens of blockbuster movies and has become recognizable for his signature style. Recently he directed and produced the TV series Wednesday, the second-most watched show on Netflix.

• The fantastic and visionary world of Tim Burton, in a rich volume that celebrates his dreamlike and grotesque style, developed over 30 years of great successes
• Published to accompany an exhibition at the Museo Nazionale del Cinema, Turin, 10 October 2023 - 7 April 2024

Visual Storytelling covers all major components of creating powerful images including lighting, camera functions, composition and storytelling. However, the main focus of the book is not just creating compelling visuals, but more importantly creating images that inform and move the audience. Images carry emotional weight and Visual Storytelling teaches readers how to harness these emotions to maximize the emotion of the story, while minimizing the amount of dialogue necessary.

What makes Visual Storytelling unique is that it not only covers the theoretical concepts of filmmaking but also the technical elements necessary to achieve the emotional outcome. This combination of theory and practice helps to create well-informed and skilled filmmakers.

In this official centennial history of the greatest studio in Hollywood, unforgettable stars, untold stories, and rare images from the Warner Bros. vault bring a century of entertainment to vivid life.

The history of Warner Bros. is not just the tale of a legendary film studio and its stars, but of classic Hollywood itself, as well as a portrait of America in the last century. It's a family story of Polish-Jewish immigrants-the brothers Warner-who took advantage of new opportunities in the burgeoning film industry at a time when four mavericks could invent ways of operating, of warding off government regulation, and of keeping audiences coming back for more during some of the nation's darkest days.

Innovation was key to their early success. Four years after its founding, the studio revolutionized moviemaking by introducing sound in The Jazz Singer (1927). Stars and stories gave Warner Bros. its distinct identity as the studio where tough guys like Humphrey Bogart and strong women like Bette Davis kept people on the edge of their seats. Over the years, these acclaimed actors and countless others made magic on WB's soundstages and were responsible for such diverse classics as Casablanca, A Streetcar Named Desire, A Star Is Born, Bonnie & Clyde, Malcolm X, Caddyshack, Purple Rain, and hundreds more.

It's the studio that put noir in film with The Maltese Falcon and other classics of the genre, where the iconic Looney Tunes were unleashed on animation, and the studio that took an unpopular stance at the start of World War II by producing anti-Nazi films. Counter-culture hits like A Clockwork Orange and The Exorcist carried the studio through the 1970s and '80s. Franchise phenomena like Harry Potter, the DC universe, and more continue to shape a cinematic vision and longevity that is unparalleled in the annals of film history. These stories and more are chronicled in this comprehensive and stunning volume. Copyright © 2023 Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc.

Tom Shone
ID: 17923
Издательство: Thames & Hudson

The definitive illustrated monograph on one of the major writer-directors of modern cinema

In this retrospective, Tom Shone reviews Woody Allen’s entire career, providing incisive commentary on his films and shedding light on this uniquely self-deprecating filmmaker, with the help of comments contributed by Allen himself. Superbly illustrated with more than 250 key images, this is a fitting tribute to one of the masters of modern cinema, published to mark Woody Allen’s eightieth birthday.

Woody Allen is a uniquely innovative performer, writer and director with nearly fifty movies to his credit, from cult slapstick films and romantic comedies to introspective character studies and crime thrillers. Classics such as Annie Hall, Manhattan, Stardust Memories, Broadway Danny Rose and Hannah and Her Sisters still resonate, and more recently Midnight in Paris and Blue Jasmine have been notable successes.

Born Allan Stewart Konigsberg on 1 December 1935 and raised in New York City, he was destined for a show-business career when he began writing scripts for TV shows while still a teenager. He then achieved recognition as a stand-up comedian with the release of three albums of his nightclub performances. Allen first tried writing a screenplay in the mid-1960s for What’s New Pussycat?. Not satisfied with the final film, he decided that he would direct as well as write his next picture, What’s Up, Tiger Lily?, in 1966.

Woody Allen’s output has always been prodigious; he has made a film a year, more or less, since the early 1970s. Famously indifferent to award ceremonies, and having never accepted an Oscar in person, Allen has won numerous accolades for his directing and writing, including four Oscars, nine BAFTAs, two Golden Globes and, in 2014, the prestigious Cecil B. DeMille award for his contribution to cinema.

Andrey A. Tarkovsky, Hans-Joachim Schlegel, Lothar Schirmer
ID: 12488
Издательство: Thames & Hudson

A monograph on Andrey Tarkovsky, Russian filmmaker, writer, film editor and film theorist of extraordinary influence and cinematic vision

Andrey Tarkovsky was the most important Russian filmmaker of the post-war era, and one of the world’s most renowned cinematic geniuses. He directed the first five of his seven films – Ivan’s Childhood, Andrei Rublev, Solaris, Mirror and Stalker – in the Soviet Union, but in 1982 defected to Italy, where he made Nostalgia. His final film, The Sacrifice, was produced in Sweden in 1985. Tarkovsky’s films are characterized by metaphysical themes, extended takes, an absence of conventional dramatical structure and plot, and a dream-like, visionary style of cinematography. They achieve a spiritual intensity and transcendent beauty that many consider to be without parallel.

This book presents extended sequences of stills from each of the films alongside synopses and cast and crew listings. It includes reflections on Tarkovsky’s work from fellow artists and writers including Jean-Paul Sartre and Ingmar Bergman, for whom Tarkovsky was ‘the greatest, the one who invented a new language.’ Extracts from Tarkovsky’s own writings and diaries offer a wealth of insights into his poetic and philosophical views on cinematography, which he described as ‘sculpting in time’. The book also reproduces many personal Polaroid photographs that confirm the extraordinary poetic vision of a great artist who died aged only 54, but who remains a potent influence on artists and filmmakers today.

About the Authors:

Andrey A. Tarkovsky is the son of filmmaker Andrei Tarkovsky.

Hans-Joachim Schlegel is a film historian and the editor and translator of the writings of Sergei Eisenstein and Andrei Tarkovsky.

Lothar Schirmer is a German publisher and art collector.
