Wassily Kandinsky was undoubtedly one of the most exciting artists of the twentieth century. He brought an equal passion and commitment to his work as a painter, a theoretician and a teacher of art. After conventional beginnings in Munich, he devoted his intellectual and artistic energies to pioneering new dimensions of expression in art. He ultimately arrived at an abstract style of painting based on the inner properties of colour and form.

Although Kandinsky may not be the first truly abstract artist, he was nevertheless the first to experiment with non-representational forms in a logical manner and to develop out of them a homogeneous style. His writings on art, including his ground-breaking work On the Spiritual in Art, have lost none of their significance, and the Compositions which caused such a furore at the first Blaue Reiter exhibition in 1911 are still full and dazzling today.

About the Authors:

Brooklyn-based KAWS (born in 1974) is widely considered one of the most relevant artists of his generation. Within the Pop art tradition, he has created a prolific body of influential work, which both engages young people with contemporary art and straddles the worlds of art and design to include both product and graphic design, paintings, murals and sculpture.

By the time of his death from AIDS at the age of 31, Keith Haring (1958-1990) was already a wildly successful and popular artist. An updated and expanded edition of the definitive monograph on R. B. Kitaj (1932–2007), a major figure of the School of London alongside Lucian Freud, David Hockney and Francis Bacon

R. B. Kitaj (1932-2007) is recognized universally as a modern master. His powerful, controversial and highly personal paintings, pastels and drawings reflect his unfashionable commitment to the human figure as a subject and his complex involvement with the art of the past, with political and social issues and with his own Jewish identity. 

In the fourth and final edition of his definitive and much-praised monograph on the artist, Marco Livingstone has updated his text to include a survey of Kitaj's work from 1999 to 2007. 30 illustrations of recent works and 20 additional illustrations of earlier works have been added. Virtually all of the illustrations that were in black-and-white in earlier editions are now reproduced in full colour. 30 new 'prefaces' written by Kitaj himself have been added, some of them never before published. The delightfully unclassifiable work of a master painter

Designated as "degenerate" by the Nazis, Paul Klee (1879-1940) is today considered one of the most important artists of the 20th century. His works stand out for the variety in their forms of artistic expression.

His Tunisian water-colours depicting landscape, architecture and, above all, the North African light of this Mediterranean land constitute the true beginning of Klee’s painting career. Although these paintings still fall under the heading of ’objective,’ they already exhibit indications of his tendency toward abstraction and a language of forms.

Geometrical figures and hieroglyphic elements characterize the majority of these works, which for this reason seem reminiscent of ’naive’ and playful children’s painting. In reality, however, Klee’s paintings have their roots in theoretical considerations, their recurrent symbols conveying personal and at times political content.

Since the 1950s, German painter Konrad Klapheck has been producing a rigorous body of work. The bulk of his extraordinarily focused artistic career comprises a continued painterly investigation of technological machines and everyday objects such as typewriters, sewing machines, and ventilators. The artist’s canvases, however, are not mere depictions; the objects Klapheck presents are subtly anthropomorphized and charged with psychological, social, and political meaning. A telephone, for example, takes on a playful, eroticized quality in one canvas, while a typewriter becomes a menacing object evocative of brute power in another. An artist’s artist, Klapheck has never painted according to fashions dictated by the art world; he is a painter guided by his own obsessions. However, his work bears a number of crucial relationships to the history of painting and to the artistic and intellectual concerns of postwar art. In its unexpected combination of deadpan depiction and evocative playfulness, Klapheck’s canvases forge an important link in twentieth-century art, melding elements from Surrealism and Pop Art with a singular painterly sensibility to create a uniquely influential body of work.

This long-overdue English-language monograph comprises an in-depth examination of Klapheck’s work, bringing together an extensive group of paintings that span the continued course of his career. The publication provides an overview of important paintings of technological devices and machinery, while also presenting examples of more recent evocative, figurative work.

Konrad Witz (c. 1400 – c. 1446) counts among the most radical revivalists of painting in the first half of the fifteenth century. While his achievements testify to his knowledge of the Old Netherlandish painting of his time, they also constitute Witz’s extraordinarily original signature. The uncontested highlight of his work is the Geneva Altar (1444), which features the Biblical scene of Peter fishing embedded in a veduta-like view of Lake Geneva - the first topographically accurate, identifiable landscape in the history of German painting.

There is hardly any doubt among researchers that the approximately twenty panels for four commissioned altars were made by Witz himself. All the more diverse, then, are the opinions about his education, career, sphere of influence, and successors. This publication discusses new theses with respect to Witz’s artistic background.
