Though most famous for his engravings, Albrecht Dürer (1471-1528) was also a master painter and draftsman whose work exemplified the spirit of German art. Dürer's importance in the German High Renaissance was such that he can be considered to embody the movement entirely. His visits to Italy (where he studied most notably with Giovanni Bellini) had a profound effect on his artistic development and enabled him to combine both German and Italian influences in his work. In his later life, Dürer's passion for knowledge and progress led him to research and write on the subjects of art theory and mathematics, making him not only the greatest Northern European artist of his time but also one of its leading thinkers. This overview of Dürer's entire oeuvre - covering his oil, tempera, and watercolour paintings, copper and wood engravings, and his drawings and sketches - is the perfect introduction to his work.

The prints of darkness. The art, theory, and woodcut print revolution of Albrecht Dürer

A polymath of the German Renaissance, Albrecht Dürer (1471 - 1528) was a prolific artist, theorist, and writer whose works explored everything from religion to art theory to philosophy. His vast body of work includes altarpieces, portraits, self-portraits, watercolors, and books, but is most celebrated for its astonishing collection of woodcut prints, which transformed printmaking from an artisan practice into a whole new art form.

Dürer's woodcuts astonish in scale as much as detail. Through works such as Apocalypse and the Triumphal Arch for Emperor Maximilian I, he created dense, meticulous compositions that were much larger, much more finely cut, and far more complex than any earlier woodcut efforts. With an ambitious tonal and dynamic range, he introduced a new level of conceptual, emotional, and spiritual intensity. His two major woodcut series on Christ's Passion named The Large Passion and The Small Passion after their size, are particularly remarkable for their vivid human treatment of the Christian narrative. In his copper engraving, Melancholia I, meanwhile, Dürer created a startling vision of emotional ennui, often cited as a defining early image of a depressive or melancholic state.

Ever inquisitive, Dürer absorbed ideas not only from masters and fellow artists in Germany but also from Italy, while his own influence extended across Europe for generations to come. In this essential TASCHEN introduction, we explore this pioneering figure s complex practice, his omnivorous intellect, and the key works which shaped his enduring legacy.

Five full centuries lie between us and the life of Albrecht Dürer (1471-1528). His ability to represent a subject with an absolute fidelity to every detail seemed miraculous to his contemporaries, and still astounds us now: we need only think of his water-colours of plants and animals.

In addition, Dürer was the first painter to devote such close attention to the art of the self-portrait. No artist before him painted as many as he. The works by Dürer collected in this book show the full range of this artist's unique genius.

This lavishly illustrated book is an authoritative study of Dutch painting from 1600 to 1800 and covers all the major artists of the period -- including Hals, Rembrandt, and Vermeer -- setting them firmly in the wider context of Dutch art. It has immediately established itself as the new standard work in this great period of painting.

"Seymour Slive's text first appeared in 1966 in partnership with the late Jakob Rosenberg. "Slive is a great teacher and he knows how to impart his enthusiasm to his readers.... This volume is the useful instrument which every user will hope and expect to find". -- Lyckle De Vries, Burlington Magazine

"Like the original Pelican volume, this one is an essential reference and serves both the academic and the general reader". -- Choice

The appealing genre paintings of great seventeenth-century Dutch artists - Vermeer, Steen, de Hooch, Dou and others - have long enjoyed tremendous popularity. This comprehensive book explores the evolution of genre painting throughout the Dutch Golden Age, beginning in the early 1600s and continuing through the opening years of the next century. Wayne Franits, a well-known scholar of Dutch genre painting, offers a wealth of information about these works as well as about seventeenth-century Dutch culture, its predilections and its prejudices. The author approaches genre paintings from a variety of perspectives, examining their reception among contemporary audiences and setting the works in their political, cultural and economic contexts. The works emerge as distinctly conventional images, Franits shows, as genre artists continually replicated specific styles, motifs and a surprisingly restricted number of themes over the course of several generations. Luxuriously illustrated and with a full representation of the major artists and the cities where genre painting flourished, this book will delight students, scholars and general readers alike.

In light of the popular, “beautiful” paintings of his Impressionist phase, it is easy to lose sight of the complexity of the oeuvre of Edgar Degas (1834–1917). All his life, the artist experimented with printing techniques and drawing as well as photography and sculpture. In his late work (1890–1910/12), the delicate, detailed painting of his mature period yields to a unique pleasure in technical experimentation and an obsessive creativity, which increasingly liberated the means of depiction from its reproductive function. As if in a dreamlike state, the present and past, things seen and remembered, are united, resulting in nude studies, ballet scenes, landscapes, and portraits. This is the first publication to present a comprehensive view of the technical diversity and wide range of themes in Degas’ oeuvre.

Edvard Munch’s images of love, alienation, jealousy, and death - universal human experiences but filtered through events in his own life - are explored through several print series in this catalogue to an exhibition at the National Gallery of Art in Washington.

Renowned for such powerful paintings as The Scream and Madonna, Munch continually reworked his monumental themes in the graphic arts. This publication brings together nearly sixty of Munch’s most important prints, from the National Gallery of Art and two exceptional private collections, demonstrating how the artist’s experimental impulses and virtuosic handling of intaglio, lithography, and woodcut over the course of his lifetime endowed his haunting motifs with new meanings. Stunning reproductions reveal Munch as a master printmaker, manipulating materials and color in the service of his artistic concepts. Scholars and general readers alike will gain a much richer and more nuanced appreciation for this great Norwegian artist.

A profound portrayal of Edvard Munch’s radical and individual modernism, giving new insights into seemingly familiar work.

Edvard Munch (1863–1944) was one of the pioneers of modern art. His works revolve around the great human tragedies of love and death, which the intrepid founder of Expressionism varied with a previously unseen psychological immediacy in his visual language.

This book focuses on the significance of Munch’s oeuvre as a highly independent contribution to modern art. Including over 130 paintings, as well as 85 drawings and prints, this is the first publication to shed light on the disappearance and re-creation of the motif in the context of material-based modernity. This fundamental theme was explored in terms of motif and materials used: for instance, the artist not only integrated the role of coincidence by exposing his works to the elements, but also the notion of natural decay as components in his creative process. In the waning nineteenth century Munch set the stage for the twentieth by decisively crossing over the boundaries between the genres of painting and printmaking, in his work with photography and film, and through his emphasis on processes

Edward Hopper, born in Nyack in 1882, remains one of the most important American painters. After studying to be an illustrator, he entered the famous New York School of Art, where he studied under the direction of Robert Henri, whose influence on Hopper’s work was fundamental, as he was the one who encouraged Hopper to paint scenes from American life. In his works, Hopper poetically expressed the solitude of man confronted to the American way of life as it developed in the 1920s. Inspired by the movies and particularly by the various camera angles and attitudes of characters, his paintings expose the alienation of mass culture. Done in cold colours and inhabited by anonymous characters, Hopper’s paintings also symbolically reflect the Great Depression. Despite his numerous trips to Europe, he remained impervious to the major trends revolutionizing painting at the time, such as cubism or surrealism. Dedicated to a very personal approach to his subjects, he modelled himself on classical painters, such as Rembrandt, Degas, or Daumier.

His paintings of gas stations, motels, and scenes from everyday life represent an aesthetic testimony to individualism, wide-open spaces, and the fundamental values of the American nation. He died in 1967, leaving behind a definitive imprint on American art.
