Renowned Art Nouveau artist Gustav Klimt was born in Baumgarten, a suburb of Vienna. Excited by the artists in other countries who were beginning to rebel against orthodoxy Klimt began to develop new ideas, and in 1897 he co-founded the Vienna Secession. The artists of the Vienna Secession did not form a single ‘school’; they were individuals, many of whom worked in very different fields, and they certainly approached their work in very different ways. But they shared similar goals and priorities in seeking to break free of the constraints of the late nineteenth century academic art establishment. The author:

Gilles Néret (1933–2005) was an art historian, journalist, writer and museum correspondent. He organized several art retrospectives in Japan and founded the SEIBU museum and the Wildenstein Gallery in Tokyo. He directed art reviews such as L'Œil and Connaissance des Arts and received the Elie Faure Prize in 1981 for his publications. His TASCHEN titles include Salvador Dalí: The Paintings, Matisse, and Erotica Universalis.

Gustav Klimt: In search of the “total artwork” follows the course of Klimt’s career. It starts with his early work as one of Vienna’s most successful public muralists and concluding with his later triumph as the city’s foremost society portraitist. In between, the publication examines Klimt’s absorption of Symbolist influences, his collaborations with the Vienna Secession and the Wiener Werkstätte, and his involvement with the 1908 “Kunstschau”, the last major exhibition organized by and for the Austrian avant-garde prior to the outbreak of World War I.
