An evocative portrait of New York City by more than 40 photographers from around the world

More than 60 million people visit New York City each year. Every single traveller experiences the city in a unique way. There is no such thing as one New York. Streets of New York is a New York photo book that celebrates the Big Apple’s tremendous diversity by bringing together over 40 contemporary photographers and their multiple perspectives on this unique metropolis.

Often drawing on a strong social media presence, each photographer offers her or his personal take on New York’s unparalleled vibrancy, impact, and allure, creating both a rich collection of city photography and street style, and a visual catalogue of New York travel inspirations. Photographs of world-renowned New York landmarks and attractions like the Empire State Building, Brooklyn Bridge, and World Trade Center Transportation Hub are interspersed with pictures of New York’s hidden treasures, tucked-away Manhattan charms, and lesser-known, but equally interesting New York City districts — all captured with a present-day attention to detail and a wide-eyed love for the City that Never Sleeps.

At the heart of MENDO is the love of pure design. Before establishing the inspirational concept store and go-to flagship bookstore for style-conscious bibliophiles in Amsterdam in 2002, founders Roy Rietstap and Joost Albronda were accomplished graphic designers with an eye for innovation and entrepreneurship. Thus, a brilliant retail concept was created in the form of the MENDO of today. The collaboration of teNeues x MENDO is a synergy on many levels — a premier international publisher of illustrated books on culture combining with trendsetting designers with a great love for beautiful, asthetically-minded books — housed in a one-of-a-kind global bookstore. If you look closely, you will see that the simple, elegant black walls are actually made of precise stacks of books — an idea that is typical Amsterdam

Streets of New York is part of the Streets of… series of books which gathers the personal visions of a favourite metropolis by multiple photographers

Dial Parrott
ID: 16286
Видавництво: Rizzoli

An ideal volume for lovers of Venice and architecture aficionados, combining in-depth history of this singular city with more than 100 color photographs and maps. Of Venice’s many majestic spaces, none is as evocative and significant as the Piazza San Marco. An authoritative account of the development of the entire piazza complex, through which unfolds the history of the Republic in general, The Genius of Venice celebrates the city’s oldest and most important architectural site. Dial Parrott’s view of Venice is a heroic one. From their lagoon, the bold and calculating Venetians forged a city that stands today not merely as an attraction for millions, but as a testament to architectural genius: the epitome of what we now call New Urbanism and a shining example of Western communal art. Enhanced by more than 100 illustrations, The Genius of Venice presents the magnificent edifices of the piazza as, in the words of John Ruskin, the "living books of history" of this iconic urban environment.

About the Author:

Dial Parrott is a graduate of Princeton University and the University of Virginia who has worked as a journalist, teacher, and lawyer. He lives in Connecticut.

Beautiful monograph on photographer Ara Guler, aka 'The Eye of Istanbul'.

Being a testament to Turkey's rich history, A Play of Light and Shadow offers a contemporary view of Guler's work while also providing the opportunity to explore iconic and unknown parts of it.

With text contributions by art historian Kim Knoppers, curator and head of photography department at Istanbul Modern, Demet Yildiz Dincer, photographer and filmmaker Ahmet Polat, and Claartje van Dijk, curator and head of exhibitions at Foam in Amsterdam.

About the Photographer:

Born on 16th August 1928, Ara Guler is a Turkish photojournalist, also known as Istanbul's Eye. His father owned a pharmacy, but had many friends that belonged to the world of art. Ara came into contact with these people and they inspired him to opt for a career in films/cinema. He worked in film studios and joined courses of drama under Muhsin Ertugrul. Later, he leaned towards journalism and abandoned cinema. In 1950 he joined Yeni Istanbul, a Turkish newspaper, as a photojournalist. During the same time, he studied economics from University of Istanbul. Then he started working for Hurriyet.

In 1958 when Time-Life, an American publication opened its Turkey branch, Ara Guler became its initial correspondent. Soon enough he started to get commissioned by other international magazines, such as Stern, Paris Match, and Sunday Times, London. In 1961, he was hired by Hayat magazine as the chief photographer.

In this time, he met Marc Riboud and Henri Cartier-Bresson, who recruited him to join Magnum Photos. Ara was presented in 1961 British Photography Yearbook. In the same year, the American Society of Magazine Photographers made him the first Turkish photographer to become the member of this organization.

In 1960s, Ara's work was used in books by notable authors as a means of illustration and were shown at different exhibitions around the world. In 1968, his work was displayed at the Museum of Modern Art in New York in a show called, Ten Masters of Color Photography. Moreover, his photographs were also shown in Cologne's fair, Photokina in Germany. Two years later, Turkei, his photography album was published. His images related to art and its history were featured in magazines, like Horizon, Life, Time, and Newsweek.

Venice, with her winding canals and magnificent palaces, has enchanted artists, poets, aristocrats, and visitors for centuries.

Turn the pages of this beautifully produced collection of photographs, and it's easy to see why. For the past two hundred years, Venice has remained practically unchanged, a testament to the glorious, singular design of La Serenissima. In stunning full-color photographs, Bellissima Venice presents the city from numerous dramatic perspectives: From panoramic rooftops, unhurried gondolas, and columned palace galleries. From the Piazza San Marco to San Giorgio Maggiore, from the Rialto Bridge to the Bridge of Sighs, from the Grand Canal to snaking water alleyways, Michel Setboun's exquisite images distill the essence of Venice's serenely seductive beauty.

Harlots, hoodlums, and heathens in Brassaï's Paris

"Brassaï is a living eye," wrote Henry Miller of the Hungarian–born artist who adopted Paris after World War I and became one of its most celebrated photographers. Originally a painter before he moved on to writing, sculpture, cinema and, most famously, photography, Brassaï (1899-1984) was a member of Paris`s cultural elite, counting Miller, Picasso, Sartre, Camus, and Cocteau, among his friends. Camera in hand, he scoured the streets and bars of Paris, unabashedly capturing the city`s inhabitants in their natural habitats. Prostitutes, hoodlums, and other ‘marginal` characters were the most famous heroes of Brassaï`s moody, gritty photographs taken often by night. Including an extensive selection of Brassaï`s finest photographs and an essay describing his life and work, this book explores the world of Brassaï in thematic chapters: Minotaure magazine, Paris at Night, Secret Paris, Day Visions, Artists of My Life, and Graffiti and Transmutations.

Brassai

Roaming Paris streets by night in the early 1930s, Brassai created arresting images of the city's dramatic nocturnal landscape. The back alleys, Metro stations, and bistros he photographed are by turn hauntingly empty or peopled by prostitutes, laborers, thugs, and lovers. Paris by night, first published in French as Paris de nuit in 1932, collected sixty of these images, which have since become photographic icons. Original and subsequent editions of the book are highly sought after by collectors. For Brassai, 1932 and 1933 were the most important years in his life: they were the years in which he met Picasso, published Paris by Night - his first book - and collaborated with the Surrealists on the magazine Minotaure. But he distinguished himself from the Surrealist group by commenting, "The surreal effect of my pictures was nothing more than reality made fantastic through a particular vision. All I wanted to express was reality, for nothing is more surreal." The strange, bewitching poetry of Paris by Night faithfully embodies this credo.

Interest in Brassai's work has been fuelled in recent years by major retrospective exhibitions of his work at the Centre Pompidou in Paris, at the Houston Museum of Fine Arts, and at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. Complementing the catalogues of his work that accompanied these shows, and publishing to coincide with the exhibition Brassai: The Soul of Paris (Hayward Gallery, London, 22 February to 13 May 2001), this long-overdue reissue of Paris by Night in photogravure brings one of Brassai's finest works back into print.

During the golden age when Montparnasse was teeming with artists, Robert Doisneau gained remarkable access to the artists working in Paris from 1937 onwards, and he visited their studios and caught them in various private moments: working, reflecting, and even playing with their children. This book, which includes some previously unpublished photographs, shares Doisneau’s intimate view on the work and lives of these artists. Many remain famous - Picasso, David Hockney, Jasper Johns, Giacometti, Saul Steinberg, Marcel Duchamp, Le Corbusier, Foujita - while others have fallen into obscurity, perhaps one day to be rediscovered. Regardless of the artist’s social status - whether major figure of the day or struggling newcomer - Doisneau approached each subject with the same humble eye. His signature black-and-white photographs capture the nostalgia of the period and bear witness to these artists in the act of creating some of the world’s finest art. This book, published in cooperation with Doisneau’s daughters, is a fascinating document of the daily lives of artists by one of the world’s most famous and popular photographers.
