Life always shows Michael Poliza new paths: from actor to entrepreneur, from professional photographer to travel designer. After a career in the IT and Internet industries, Poliza started a three-year multimedia expedition on a ship around the world. In 2002, he settled in Cape Town, traveled the African plains and quickly became a world renowned wildlife and landscape photographer. The New York Times said of his work that “it could change the way you think about photography.” Captivated by the beauty of his work, friends of Poliza begin to ask if they can accompany him on his expeditions, and in 2011, he founded the company MICHAEL POLIZA PRIVATE TRAVEL, which tailors very special adventure trips to the most beautiful and untouched places.

Gunter Kast is a freelance journalist. He lives southwest of Munich in Herrsching am Ammersee. Ingrid Weir has designed interiors in Mexico, Los Angeles and Sydney for clients including The Macquarie Group, The Sydney Opera House, National Parks and Wildlife, Charter Hall, The Film School and The National Art School.

Trained at Sydney University, she holds a Bachelors in Architecture. With a background in set and costume design, she has worked extensively in film, television and theatre in Australia. As the daughter of film director Peter Weir and production and costume designer Wendy Stites, she grew up in the industry.

Ingrid studied photography at CCAC in San Francisco and The Australian Centre for Photography. She photographed the 2015 Bringing Australians Home campaign for Qantas, which also involved flying around the country and holding photography workshops in capital cities on behalf of the airline.

For the past decade she has owned a country escape in the old gold-rush village/artists colony of Hill End in New South Wales' central west. She divides her time between there and Sydney.

Mariano Vivanco travelled the world with his family from a very early age, before eventually settling down in New Zealand at the age of ten. This is where his passion for art and photography began. A compendium of magnificent engineering drawings that gives a unique overview of the history of railways

The advent of railways played an instrumental part in Britain’s economic and social revolution in the 19th century, with technical advances that were the envy of the world. From the beginning, these developments were chronicled through meticulous drawings of locomotives, carriages and wagons, as well as of stations, bridges and tunnels. The detailed plans facilitated the manufacturing process and the maintenance of the rapidly expanding railway network.

Miraculously, about a million of these magnificent drawings have survived and are held in the National Railway Museum in York. Christopher Valkoinen has selected over 130 examples that tell the engineering history of great innovations and triumphs, such as the Forth Bridge, and reveal the work of famous pioneers, including Richard Trevithick, George Stephenson, and Nigel Gresley of Flying Scotsman fame. Other plans range from Queen Victoria’s royal saloon and a travelling post office to a station tea room at York and modern experiments with a hovertrain. There are also drawings for railways around the world: in the USA, Russia, Japan, India, Australia and Egypt, among others, as well as contemporary photographs and posters.

Throughout, Valkoinen provides valuable insights into the social and political impact of the railways. He also reveals how these drawings are more than a reference tool for the historian or modelmaker; they are exquisite works of art, painstakingly produced by highly skilled artists, which can be appreciated in their own right.

Christopher Valkoinen works in the Search Engine library and archives at the National Railway Museum in York, where he manages the digitization of engineering drawings and other archive materials. He is also a qualified steam locomotive fireman.
