50 step-by-step projects, plus practical advice on hanging curtains, choosing fabric, and measuring up

Learn to sew curtains, shades, pillows, and more and make your home truly your own with these 50 beautiful projects. Sewing your own home furnishings will allow you to choose exactly the fabric and style you want, and will make your home unique.

There’s never been a better time to sew for the home, with a huge range of furnishing fabrics available in stores and online. And the money you save by making these items yourself can be put towards buying the loveliest fabrics you can afford, making your home more beautiful still. Designer Vanessa Arbuthnott guides you through 50 projects, each made in one of her own beautiful printed fabrics, and all with easy-to-follow illustrated instructions.

The projects range from the simplest of pillow covers for the novice stitcher, through to lined curtains with an array of different headings, shades, bed throws, and table linen. There is also a chapter on accessories, such as a cook’s apron, and table mats, which would all be a great starting point if you want to brush up on your skills before tackling a larger project. Vanessa explains how each of her collections was developed, and what inspired her designs, but if you prefer to choose your own material, there is plenty of advice on selecting fabrics, using color, cutting out, matching pattern repeats, piping, and hand-stitching, as well as a techniques section covering the basic sewing skills you will need.

Guidance on measuring for curtains and shades, and on ways to hang them, as well as instructions for valances and an upholstered cornice, make this a complete introduction to sewing your own window treatments, and more. Previously published as The Home-Sewn Home, this new edition includes four completely new projects and inspirational photography featuring Vanessa’s most recent fabric collections throughout.

Tricia Guild
ID: 6102
Издательство: Quadrille Publishing

For almost 40 years, Tricia Guild has been setting the pace with her up-to-the-minute collections of fabrics, wallpapers and furnishings for interiors. Her extraordinary gift for colour, her innate understanding of space and proportion, her brilliance at mixing pattern and her elegant, feminine view of the world make her collections and the rooms in which they are applied uniquely stylish and beautiful.

Over the years her collections have varied from vibrant hot colours to cool shades of white, from floral prints in every shape and size to elegant stripes and plaids, yet in every case they are instantly recognisable as designs by Tricia Guild. To celebrate these four decades at the forefront of interior design, Tricia now presents a collection of international locations decorated with her latest and arguably most beautiful designs.

This is no retrospective - Tricia never looks back - but a confident statement encapsulating everything that is memorable about her, certain, style. Each of the fourteen locations featured in the book is viewed throughout, to show how Tricia enhances different types of room and connects spaces effortlessly and elegantly.

Whether a stunning modern Manhattan loft brightly specked with fruitdrop colour on a background of gleaming white or a Regency English manor house rustling with silks in subtle hues, a steel and glass Mediterranean beachfront retreat or a timeless Parisian apartment, every detail is perfectly considered.

As always, Elspeth Thompson's descriptive text interprets how each effect is achieved and James Merrell's state-of-the-art photography makes every room glow with light and colour.

An inspiring showcase of today’s new food movement and the people behind it.

Creative young people who used to want to work at start-ups, advertising agencies, or investment banks are now increasingly likely to become organic farmers, beekeepers, speak-easy bartenders, or owners of mom-and-pop grocery stores. Inspired by heartfelt passion and an uncompromising commitment to quality, a new generation of entrepreneurs from around the world is putting their skills to work at preserving local culinary traditions, brewing the best beer, preparing exceptional marmalades, or rescuing heirloom varieties of apples.

A Delicious Life presents the protagonists of this new food movement and offers a look into their world as well as their kitchens, gardens, stores, and workshops. While some are rediscovering long forgotten ingredients or cooking methods, others are researching and developing inventive new recipes. The book features designers who are integrating food and culinary rituals into their creations as well publishers of so-called foodzines who are documenting the latest innovations in charming ways.

In addition to introducing the aforementioned personalities, A Delicious Life also showcases the changing visual culture of today’s foodists, including a selection of packaging design. The book also features a broad spectrum of locations for cooking, eating, and shopping, as well as kitchen utensils and surprising events that encourage readers to become a part of this new food movement themselves.

Here at last: the fully expanded, updated, and freshly designed second edition of the most comprehensive and widely acclaimed guide to domestic architecture — in print since its publication in 1984, and acknowledged everywhere as the unmatched, essential reference to American houses.

Focusing on dwellings in urban and suburban neighborhoods and rural locations all across the continental United States — houses built over the past three hundred years reflecting every social and economic background — this guide provides in-depth information on the essentials of domestic architecture with facts and frames of reference that will enable you to look in a fresh way at the houses around you.

With more than 1,600 detailed photographs and line illustrations, and a lucid, vastly informative text, it will teach you not only to recognize distinct architectural styles but also to understand their historical significance. What does that cornice signify? Or that porch? The shape of that door? The window treatment? When was this house built? What does the style say about its builders and their eras? You'll find the answers to these and myriad other questions in this encyclopedic and eminently practical book.

Here are more than fifty styles and their variants, spanning seven distinct historical periods. Each style is illustrated with a large schematic drawing that highlights its most important identifying features. Additional drawings and photographs provide, at a glance, common alternative shapes, principal subtypes, and close-up views of typical small details — windows, doors, cornices, etc. — that can be difficult to see in full-house illustrations. The accompanying text explains the identifying features of each style, describing where and in what quantity they can be found, discussing all of its notable variants, and tracing their origin and history.

The book's introductory chapters provide invaluable general discussions of construction materials and techniques, house shapes, and the various traditions of architectural fashion that have influenced American house design through the past three centuries. A pictorial key and glossary simplifies identification, connecting easily recognized architectural features — the presence of a tile roof, for example — to the styles in which that feature is likely to be found.
Among the new material included in this edition are chapters on styles that have emerged in the thirty years since the previous edition; a groundbreaking chapter on the development and evolution of American neighborhoods; an appendix on approaches to construction in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries; an expanded bibliography; and 600 new photographs and line drawings throughout.

Here is an indispensable resource — both easy and pleasurable to use — for the house lover and the curious tourist, for the house buyer and the weekend stroller, for neighborhood preservation groups, architecture buffs, and everyone who wants to know more about their own homes and communities. It is an invaluable book of American architecture, culture, and history.

Elvin McDonald

A Garden Makes a House a Home features twenty-five residential gardens from every region across the United States, presented by veteran shelter magazine garden editor Elvin McDonald in a lavishly illustrated format.

Lush, well-tended gardens - whether they adorn humble cottages or sprawling estates - add beauty and personality to any property and truly make a house into a home. In this volume, gardens from simple to grand respond to the needs of their sites and reveal the unique personalities of the owners that care for them: on a tight urban lot in Houston, a thoughtful selection of water-loving plants and an innovative fountain that mediates rainfall from the city’s frequent deluges block out noise from the surrounding streets; elaborate terraces on a steep hillside in Portland, Oregon, create a variety of outdoor living spaces nestled directly among a rich tapestry of perennials, tall grasses, and Japanese maples; and on forty verdant New Hampshire acres, a series of garden “rooms” and meandering paths create an Edwardian-inspired escape.

The diverse array of gardens inspire with glorious, full-color images of plants thriving in all climates - berries, lettuces, and herbs burst from the rich soils of Berkeley, California, in an edible garden the whole neighborhood is invited to enjoy; succulents of all sizes and shapes add color and texture to a lakeside home in Dallas and an arid Tucson yard equally well; dozens of bonsai and plants native to Asia create an authentic Eastern atmosphere in Indianola, Iowa; the rambling cottage-style plantings of England are reinterpreted in a river valley in Knoxville, Tennessee; and closely clipped boxwood in Greenwich, Connecticut, forms a parterre that rivals the beauty of its elaborate French predecessors across the ocean.

From furniture and frames to traditional fabrics and from ceramics and glassware to garden furniture, this new, compact edition of a best-selling classic describes how to create a home that is quintessentially Provencal.

In this volume, we are shown the exteriors of some of the most beautiful houses in Provence, including French designer Edith Mezard's home and British designer Terence Conran's former French residence. Images of gold-hued walls, iron balustrades, leafy terraces, and painted shutters inspire in the reader's mind thoughts of balmy days in the Provencal sunshine. Aromatic lavender in terra-cotta pots and almond trees casting shade over cobbled courtyards evoke the magic of Provence-style living. From plain, rustic-style benches and beds to delicate walnut armchairs and elaborate dressers, all the painted and polished accoutrements of a Provencal home are featured. A section on ceramics and glassware explores the world of the Provencal potter and glassmaker: the materials they use, their techniques, and the distinctive styles of decoration are all described and illustrated in detail. And from tableware to what lies beneath, we trace the exotic history of Provencal textiles and explore a variety of traditional flower-print fabrics and intricate quilted and furnishing textiles.

The final section of the book provides extensive source details for decorating the home in Provencal style.
