About the Author:

Naomi Pollock is an American architect who lives in Tokyo where she writes about design in Japan. Her work has appeared in numerous publications on both sides of the Pacific, including A+U, Dwell, Jutakutokushu, Wallpaper* and Architectural Record for whom she is the Special International Correspondent. In addition, she is the author of Modern Japanese House and Hitoshi Abe (both published by Phaidon Press), Made in Japan: 100 New Products, as well as the co-author of New Architecture in Japan.

Authors and Contributors:

Sean Scherer studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and New York’s Whitney Museum of American Art, exhibiting his work extensively throughout North America and Europe. He moved from New York to the Catskills in 2002, opening Kabinett & Kammer shortly after, and is Professor of Art at SUNY Oneonta.

William Abranowicz has been a photographer for more than 40 years. His work is in collections throughout the world and has appeared in nearly every major publication in the United States, Europe and Asia. His recent books include American Originals: Creative Interiors (Vendome) and Natural Elegance: Luxurious Mountain Living (Vendome).

Anderson Cooper is the anchor of the CNN news show Anderson Cooper 360° and a correspondent for the CBS news show 60 Minutes. He is the author of Dispatches from the Edge: A Memoir of War, Disasters, and Survival and The Rainbow Comes and Goes: A Mother and Son on Life, Love, and Loss.

Floral Buildings. Art Nouveau marvels across Europe

With a meticulous sensibility for light and detail, the late Keiichi Tahara captured Europe’s finest Art Nouveau architecture. Keiichi Tahara (1951–2017) lived in Paris from 1973 to 2004 before moving back to his native Japan. Considered one of architecture’s great photographers, he won many awards, including the Niépce Prize in 1988. His series include Louvre (1995); Les Anges de Croatie (1995); l’Opéra de Garnier (1996); Egypt (1997); Piemonte (2000); the Museum of Islamic Art in Doha, Qatar (2008); and The Diet Building of Japan (Kokkaigijidou) (2015).

Riichi Miyake (b. 1948) was educated at the University of Tokyo (1972) and the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris (1979). After working as a professor at Shibaura Institute of Technology, Université de Liège, Keio University, and Conservatoire National des Arts et Métiers in Paris, he is currently professor at Fuji Women’s University in Sapporo. Miyake’s publications include Weaving Culture, Creating Culture (2005) and Saint-Gobain (2010).

Born Charles-Édouard Jeanneret, Le Corbusier (1887–1965) is widely acclaimed as the most influential architect of the 20th century. Cohen’s research has focused principally on 20th-century architecture and urban planning, and his studies on German and Soviet architectural cultures. The author and curator of numerous books and exhibitions on architecture, he is an internationally acknowledged authority on Le Corbusier’s work.

Peter Gössel runs an agency for museum and exhibition design. He has published TASCHEN monographs on Julius Shulman, R. M. Schindler, John Lautner, and Richard Neutra, as well as several titles in the Basic Architecture series.
