Издательство: Rizzoli

The first book from Atlanta interior designer Melanie Turner, whose pretty work has a modern edge.

Inspired by fashion and borrowing a palette from nature, Melanie Turner's interiors possess a timeless quality that celebrates architectural details and classic design. In this fresh and serene first book, Turner shares her secrets for creating understated, sophisticated, and functional rooms. Balance, scale, light, and subtle coloration all factor into her designs, creating a timeless effect.

The elegant spaces featured in the book maintain an emphasis on simplicity and understated glamour, featuring a blend of clean lines, found and fine objects, and custom-designed, sculptural furniture. Divided by look, the book features multiple homes illustrating each style. "Calm" showcases cool, white interiors, accented by natural textures like wicker and bone. "Clarity" celebrates graphic, contrasting rooms filled with black and white. "Collected" revels in richer colors, accessorized with lush velvet, rich patterns, and metallic accents. "Color" celebrates the power of a palette-driven interior, from spring green, to pale pink, to midnight blue. "Cool" is driven by a funky 1970s vibe, with macramé chairs and Moroccan accents. Regardless of the style, these rooms are united in the power and promise of their seamless, edited beauty.

Dona Z. Meilach
ID: 2674
Издательство: Schiffer

Here is an exceptional insight into the unique ironwork created by today’s artist-blacksmiths. Over 250 color photographs display details of contemporary iron objects, including flowers, grape clusters, leaves, small and large animals that attest to the blacksmith’s role as a sculptor.

There are amazing scrolls, folds, twists, textures, and weaves not normally associated with the hard material. With heat, hammer, talent, and muscle, the modern artist-blacksmith is forging exciting forms that permeate our surroundings.

The casual viewer may often overlook details of small elements used to create a magnificent whole. Dona Z. Meilach shows how focusing on the iron details of flowers, leaves, and amazing critters makes ordinary fences, gates, and chandeliers extraordinary.

Functional joints become beautiful elements for furniture, fireplace accessories, candlestick holders, and other iron items we use daily. Dona’s approach will open one’s eyes to “see” and respect this burgeoning art form.

This stimulating book is a must for metalworkers, designers, artists, gallery owners, art lovers, and museum directors.

Bauhaus minimalism meets tasteful elegance. The Brazilian architect Isay Weinfeld designs houses and hotels in style

From one side of the globe to the other, Isay Weinfeld is one of the most sought-after architects of our contemporary era. An inimitable force in the realm of combining modern elegance with tropical vibrancy, Weinfeld thinks of a building as a complete artwork that needs to be not just functional but beautiful. Under his hand, lushly landscaped courtyards and long corridors open into wide vistas: a view of a pool or a dramatic indoor waterfall. The Brazilian architect’s works are characterized by glass and concrete, dark wood shades and soft color accents: all elements of a unique brand of distinguished restraint.

Isay Weinfeld is a volume dedicated to an architect who rarely discusses his own work. It features over 50 iconic projects: from the indoor gardens and bronze-covered private spaces of La Petite Afrique in Monte Carlo to the garden apartments of 360 in São Paulo that blend city landscape with natural surroundings to shelves and spaces of Alameda Lorena’s Livrarie da Vila bookshop. Previously unpublished photographs and detailed floorplans visually describe his work; and, discussions of unique projects offer insight into Weinfeld’s intricate blend of skills. Spotlighting Weinfeld’s most outstanding feature as a Brazilian visionary, this title highlights the creative communication between architect and commissioner.

A place that symbolizes freedom, traveling and the wind of change: It’s a Gas! is going in search of the most unique gas stations around the world

The first gasoline was sold in pharmacies — but this was to change in the 1950s. As the car experienced its great rise in popularity, gas stations began to pop up like mushrooms out of the ground. Futuristic and progressive, these modern temples of mobility became roadside reference points for young people hungry for independence, and to everyone who strove for a sense of freedom.

It’s a Gas! explores the surprisingly diverse world of the gas station — a functional high tech temple, a transit zone, a film set, a converted residence, or an abandoned ruin hidden in a backyard. The world of pumps is full of surprises, ready to be discovered in this book.

The preface was written by US-American talkshow legend and passionate car collector Jay Leno.

Co-editor Sascha Friesike is an Assistant Professor of Digital Innovation at VU University in Amsterdam, and associated researcher at Alexander von Humboldt Institute for Internet and Society Berlin, and passionate photographer of gas stations.

Jacques Garcia, Bruno Ehrs
ID: 15024
Издательство: Flammarion

In southeast Sicily, near the town of Noto, Villa Elena — a former monastery restored by Jacques Garcia — is a tranquil oasis among fragrant orchards. Reflecting the interior designer’s passion for ancient civilizations, the domain blends classical, Arabian, and Norman influences with elements borrowed from the Renaissance and the baroque, mirroring Sicilian history. With views stretching to the sea and to Syracuse, the villa is surrounded by shady terraces and lush gardens. This home — evocative of Lampedusa’s The Leopard — has been restored to its former glory through magnificent salons decked with marble, stucco work, majolica tiles, silk, and velvet, revealed here for the first time. Bruno Ehrs’s photographs, taken throughout each season of the year, masterfully capture the decadent splendor and aristocratic lifestyle of this particularly sumptuous locale in Sicily.

_______

Celebrated interior designer Jacques Garcia invites readers for the first time inside his private residence in Sicily. The former monastery, rebuilt in Noto's characteristic golden limestone, boasts spectacular salons that have been restored with a profusion of noble materials and techniques: colored marbles, flamboyant stucco work, majolica tiles, damask silks, and velvets. Time stops in the elegant music room decorated with embroidered silks and rococo-style mirrors that reflect the decor to infinity; the gilded dining room is hung with silk damask wall coverings, an eighteenth-century Murano chandelier, and furnished with Chantilly porcelain and antique Italian rococo chairs. The grand marble salon features baroque paintings and a stunning collection of sculpture and Sicilian furniture.

The exquisite villa — surrounded by shaded terraces planted with towering cacti, succulents, and colorful birds of paradise — attests to Garcia's love of ancient civilizations, and his masterful blending of Arab, Norman, Renaissance, and Baroque influences that converge in Sicily's colorful history. The domain, dotted with ancient sculptures and reflecting pools, is graced with splendid panoramic views revealing the sea near Syracuse, a distant folly, a restored villa nestled in an ancient olive grove, and the decaying grandeur of a classical temple reconstructed with ancient fragments.

Julia Morgan was a pioneering woman architect, best known for Hearst Castle, in the vanguard of Beaux-Arts design and style in the first half of the twentieth century.

Julia Morgan was truly a pioneer of her time — among other accomplishments, she was the first woman architect to be licensed in California, in 1904. Through her remarkable life and legacy, this book celebrates the Beaux-Arts architecture of California. Focusing on Morgan’s most famous project in the state, Hearst Castle, to which she devoted more than 30 years of her life, this volume also examines, for the first time, Morgan’s fabulous early buildings in style. Morgan designed more than 700 buildings across California, many of which are designated landmarks today. Deepening the reader’s understanding of California architecture, this book also places into context Morgan’s ambitions, her influences and inspirations, as well as her daily practice and challenges as a woman shaping an extraordinarily prolific and highly successful career in a man’s world.

To better understand the Beaux-Arts training Morgan underwent in Paris, the reader is taken through the challenging, highly arduous Ecole des Beaux-Arts curriculum, which Morgan completed, as a lone woman among men. Also explored, in detail, is the story of how the studio and kilns of California Faience, a Berkeley ceramic artisan’s shop, became the supplier of tens of thousands of tiles designed by Morgan and overseen by Hearst himself to decorate their architectural masterpiece overlooking the Pacific Ocean.

About the Author:

Gordon Fuglie is a guest curator of exhibitions, exhibition juror, art history lecturer, writer, and project developer with a focus on the historical and contemporary legacy of California.

The Power of Lo—TEK. A global exploration of nature-based technology

Three hundred years ago, intellectuals of the European Enlightenment constructed a mythology of technology. Influenced by a confluence of humanism, colonialism, and racism, this mythology ignored local wisdom and indigenous innovation, deeming it primitive. Today, we have slowly come to realize that the legacy of this mythology is haunting us.

Designers understand the urgency of reducing humanity’s negative environmental impact, yet perpetuate the same mythology of technology that relies on exploiting nature. Responding to climate change by building hard infrastructures and favoring high-tech homogenous design, we are ignoring millennia-old knowledge of how to live in symbiosis with nature. Without implementing soft systems that use biodiversity as a building block, designs remain inherently unsustainable.

Lo—TEK, derived from Traditional Ecological Knowledge, is a cumulative body of multigenerational knowledge, practices, and beliefs, countering the idea that indigenous innovation is primitive and exists isolated from technology. It is sophisticated and designed to sustainably work with complex ecosystems.

With a foreword by anthropologist Wade Davis and four chapters spanning Mountains, Forests, Deserts, and Wetlands, this book explores thousands of years of human wisdom and ingenuity from 18 countries including Peru, the Philippines, Tanzania, Kenya, Iran, Iraq, India, and Indonesia. We rediscover an ancient mythology in a contemporary context, radicalizing the spirit of human nature.

The editor and author:

Designer, activist, academic and author Julia Watson is the principal of her eponymously named design studio working at the intersection of anthropology, ecology, innovation, and collaborates as Watson Salembier, a full-service landscape & urban design studio specializing in rewilding.
