The most elementary of all the architect's tasks is to provide shelter. Given this age-old adage, it is remarkable to discover just how many residential solutions are being developed in today's architecture world-wide. This book documents a broad range of houses that have been built around the globe in the past ten years. The ca. 200 projects presented span all of the world's continents and hereby provide an extensive overview of the possibilities being explored in an ever tightly woven global community. At the same time, the differences spawned by differing cultural, climatic, regional, and societal backgrounds are examined. This is an essential reference work for all those interested in one of mankind's most pressing themes.

"Modern architecture is not a new branch of an old tree - it is an altogether new shoot rising beside the old roots." Thus Walter Gropius, one of the pioneers of modern architecture, on the radical departures of the 20th century. In the 1930s, the term International Style came into use to describe a new form of architecture evolved from Bauhaus and its conviction that "form follows function". Until the 1980s, International Style set the standard in modern building, with its logical formal idiom and rational solutions to construction problems. Combining steel, glass and concrete, it established an aesthetic founded on the sheer thrill of pushing to the limits of technical and economic viability. Hence the exhil-arating skylines of metropolises worldwide - but also the desolate anonymity of modern suburban environments. This book traces the exciting evolution of a style while examining the individual and regional forms it took, and analyses the ideals and realities of architectural visions of utopia.
Into the Earth presents readers with a spectacularly illustrated journey into the magic, mystery and unique character of the subterranean world of Californias vineyards the birthplace of wine caves in the Americas.
Alongside stunning full-colour photographs that showcase the rich history of Californian winemaking and spanning over 200 years from the hand-dug caves of the late 1800s to the elaborate caverns of today, this one-of-a-kind volume is also a platform for classic architecture, breathtaking gardens and much more.
Into the Earth also introduces readers to winery owners, cave drillers, and other professionals who have helped carve out the lasting legacy of Americas wine caves.
Introducing: Visual Identities for Small Businesses is a compilation of intelligent corporate designs for small, creative companies. The diverse work—such as a small run of stationery for a specialized consultant, the hand-set business cards of a typographer, or wrapping paper and chalk-boards for a local flower shop—is thematically united by a fresh attitude and personal approach that captures the imagination with which the founders pursue and communicate their business concepts.
Reflecting the full spectrum of today’s most important design trends, the featured examples make clear that intriguing visual concepts do not depend on large budget. Rather, the work included in Introducing: Visual Identities for Small Businesses is a testament to the fact that certain limitations can be beneficial to coming up with original and effectively executed creative ideas.

The resin-scented wood of the Swiss Pavilion by Peter Zumthor at the Hannover Expo, the hypo-oxygenated air of Diller+Scofidio’s Blur Bar, the sculpting air stream of Renzo Piano’s Wind Tunnel in Maranello, the placebo odors of Decosterd & Rahm, and the edible air of Marti Guixé’s Pharma Food are just a few of the most recent instances of an architecture that is seeking to reappropriate the invisible dimension of olfaction in order to imbue the experience of places with greater meaning and totality.
Hundreds of beautiful color photos display the varied, impressive iron artwork from today's artist-blacksmiths. See a variety of styles, from Modern to Victorian, in original works for homes, offices, and public spaces.
This metal art ranges in scope from massive public monuments to small, everyday objects and includes sculpture, gates, railings, furniture, lighting fixtures ranging from chandeliers to lamps and candleholders, doors, locks, and more. Concise text introduces each artist and their work.
This book is the second in a series pioneered by the late Dona Meilach and provides readers familiar with her work with a new look at some of the artists they have come to know as well as an introduction to artists not previously known.
This book will quickly become a prized possession, critical reference, and inspiration for homeowners, designers, artists, and blacksmiths alike.
Over 450 vivid color photos provide a sweeping overview of the amazing range of iron artwork being created by 82 of today's artist-blacksmiths.
These works in metal are found in public spaces, offices, and homes. They vary in size from small, everyday objects to staggering public monuments. The pieces, discussed by the artists who made them, include sculpture, gates, railings, furniture, lighting fixtures, doors, locks, and much more.
This book, the third in an ongoing series, has artwork arranged by the artist alphabetically, rather than in categories. This allows readers to see the full scope of each artist s work together on adjoining pages. Here readers will find some artists whose work they have seen in other books in this series; others they are meeting for the first time.
This book will be a prized reference guide and source of inspiration for homeowners, designers, artists, and blacksmiths as a fascinating snapshot of current trends in this dynamic, growing field of artistic endeavor.
