Nouvel by Nouvel. France's premier architect designs his own monograph

The work of France's internationally celebrated contemporary architect - and recipient of the 2008 Pritzker Prize - in a book designed by the master himselfю

Jean Nouvel, the winner of the 2008 Pritzker Prize, is widely regarded as France’s most original and important contemporary architect. From 1967 to 1970, he assisted influential architects Claude Parent and Paul Virilio, before creating his own practice in Paris. His first widely acclaimed project was the Institut du Monde Arabe in Paris (1981-87). Since then, he has completed the Lyon Opera House, the Euralille Shopping Center, Lille, and the Fondation Cartier, Paris. His major completed projects since 2000 include the Culture and Convention Center in Lucerne, Switzerland, the spectacular Agbar Tower in Barcelona, the extension of the Reina Sofia Museum, Madrid, the Quai Branly Museum in Paris, and the Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Nouvel won the RIBA (Royal Institute of British Architects) Gold Medal in 2001 and the Pritzker Prize in 2008.

Jean Nouvel worked for five years with author Philip Jodidio on this prodigiously illustrated TASCHEN monograph, a book commensurate with the architect’s talent. Two 400-page hardcover volumes give the most complete overview to date of Jean Nouvel’s career, including works in progress such as the new Louvre in Abu Dhabi, the Philharmonie de Paris, and the MoMA extension in New York. The book’s graphic design and images were conceived and selected by the architect; in addition, the transparent printed dust jackets mimic the architect’s own tendency to play with contrasts and overlaid patterns. This publication is Nouvel by Nouvel, inside and out.

About the author:

Philip Jodidio studied art history and economics at Harvard, and edited Connaissance des Arts for over 20 years. His books include TASCHEN's Architecture Now! series, Building a New Millennium, and monographs on Tadao Ando, Norman Foster, Richard Meier, Jean Nouvel, and Zaha Hadid. He is internationally renowned as one of the most popular writers on the subject of architecture.

Recipient of the 2008 Pritzker Prize, Jean Nouvel is, without any doubt, France’s most original and important contemporary architect. From 1967 to 1970, he was an assistant of the influential architects Claude Parent and Paul Virilio, then creating his own office in Paris. His first widely acclaimed project was the Institut du Monde Arabe in Paris (1981–87, with Architecture Studio). Since then, he has completed the Lyon Opera House (1986–93), the Euralille Shopping Center, Lille (1991–94), and the Fondation Cartier, Paris (1991–94). His major completed projects since 2000 include the Culture and Convention Center in Lucerne, Switzerland (1998–2000), the spectacular Agbar Tower on Barcelona’s Diagonal Avenue (2001–03), the extension of the Reina Sofia Museum, (Madrid, 1999–2005), the Quai Branly Museum on the Seine in Paris (2001–06), and the Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Apart from receiving this year’s Pritzker Prize, Jean Nouvel won the RIBA (Royal Institute of British Architects) Gold Medal in 2001.

Jean Nouvel worked for five years with author Philip Jodidio on this prodigiously illustrated TASCHEN monograph, a book that will finally give the full measure of the architect’s talent. Two 400-page hardcover volumes give the most complete overview to date of Jean Nouvel’s career, including works in progress, such as the new Louvre in Abu Dhabi, the Philharmonie de Paris, and the extension of the MoMA in New York. The book’s graphic design and images were conceived and selected by the architect; in addition, the transparent printed dust jackets mimic the architect’s own tendency to play with contrasts and overlaid patterns. One can truly say that this publication is Nouvel by Nouvel, inside and out.

In many regards, the architecture of the 21st century has to fit a square peg into a round hole. It should be energetic and meaningful and yet be as sustainable as possible in all details. It should offer ample and proportioned space for its inhabitants, but also fit harmoniously into its environment. Architect Jean-Francois Koenig has been meeting these requirements for four decades. With the goal of improving the life quality of the inhabitants and users of his buildings, he sets out elaborate aesthetic designs that also include infrastructure and transport connections. The projects in Jean-Francois Koenig’s portfolio — including offices, private houses, hotels, public buildings, and schools — reflect his enhancement and integration of the many facets of urban life. When he won the third prize in an RIBA (Royal Institute of British Architects) competition in 1979, with Norman Foster as judge, Koenig was the only student amongst the winners. Even at that stage, his drawings for a pedestrian link between Trafalgar Square and Leicester Square demonstrated his sense for the city environment, not to mention his outstanding graphic talent. One of Koenig’s many esteemed projects is the Mauritius Commercial Bank on the island of Mauritius, Koenig’s native home, where he continues to reside.

JEAN-FRANCOIS KOENIG was elected one of the “100 Architects 2012,” a competition organized by the International Union of Architects (UIA) and the Korean Institute of Architects (KIA). In the 1980s, he worked with the RIBA Gold Medal Award architect, Sir Philip Dowson. At the 2011 UIA World Congress in Tokyo, under the heading “Sustainable by Design 2050,” his Mauritius Commercial Bank was amongst the best of the architecture of Africa. Koenig has worked in England, South Africa, India, United Arab Emirates, Australia, Madagascar, the Seychelles, La Réunion, and Mauritius for the last 30-plus years.

- An architecture book for all those excited by contemporary, innovative building design and development
- Richly illustrated with a broad spectrum of architectural photography, drawings, and sketches
- A look behind the scenes with one of the world’s leading architects

Jean-Michel Frank was perhaps the most influential Parisian designer and decorator of the 1930s and 1940s, inspiring such varied talents as Andree Putman and Bonetti and Garouse. Frank established his reputation and signature look with the design of the Paris apartment of the Vicomte Charles de Noailles. The Noailles were leading progressives of their day and patrons of the major painters of Paris.

Frank’s style of understated luxury — vellum-sheathed walls, bleached leather, lacquer and shagreen — perfectly complemented the Picassos and Braques on the walls. Frank’s blocky, rectangular club chairs and sofas have been endlessly copied and produced by many admirers. He is credited for the design of the modern Parsons table, a stark form that Frank embellished with the most luxurious finish.

Admiringly described by the French "le style Frank," his look continues to exert its influence through the powerful combination of the simplest forms and the most exquisite materials to produce objects that are truly noble and utterly modern.

Jeffrey Bilhuber returns with a second book after Design Basics, his successful debut volume. In a lavish new format, the media-savvy designer for tastemakers and celebrities presents his most recent projects from coast to coast. Bilhuber views luxury as essential to every life well-lived, a way of appreciating and sharing our joy in existence, not the exclusive purview of the few. The designer encourages the reader to seek, aspire, and revel in luxury at home, however simple or adorned: from the embrace of the perfectly tufted reading chair to an heirloom vase cradling freshly cut garden roses to a dazzling chandelier that makes light dance. In seven chapters filled with charming anecdotes and lovely observations, the designer - whom Hamish Bowles has likened to a twenty-first century Billy Baldwin - explores the idea of luxury as life’s abundance reflected in a home’s varied elements: Discovery, Passion, History, Ornament, Grace, Comfort, and Delight. Each project discussed evokes the many qualities of a distinctively American luxury practically expressed and fully enjoyed at home: beauty, family, refinement, and hospitality. Within these, the reader gleans insight from Bilhuber’s inimitable style and learns that luxury is about cultivating a state of mind as much as it is about the objects with which we surround ourselves.

John Fowler was an interior decorator who set fashions and changed tastes. The English country house style, which he developed with Sibyl Colefax and Nancy Lancaster, his partners in the firm of Colefax & Fowler, has proved a source of continuing inspiration to decorators and home-owners on both sides of the Atlantic and indeed across the world. Today, a hundred years after his birth, his influence is almost as powerful as it was in the mid 20th century, when he was working on many of Britain's finest and most famous houses, including Uppark, Chequers and Buckingham Palace, as well as dozens of more modest projects.

Fowler's style has been so widely imitated that it is easy to forget what an innovator he was. In the 1930s and 1940s his style was a breath of fresh country air, sweeping away heavy velvets and damasks in favour of crisp cotton chintzes, replacing glossy mahogany with painted Regency furnishings, elaborate porcelain and glitzy ormolu with modest pottery and painted tin. Even after the war, when he came to specialize in the decoration of architecturally important interiors, he continued to prefer 'humble elegance' and 'romantic disrepair' to pomposity.

John Portman and Associates is most famous for introducing the modern atrium to corporate design. But there is much more in this magnificent portfolio of outstanding architecture than atriums. From its inception in 1953, the firm has established a global reputation for combining vision with practical development in three key areas: urban architecture, community revitalisation and suburban mixed-use projects. In fact, John Portman and Associates is largely responsible for establishing the benchmark for urban revitalisation. Major areas of practice featured in this book include mixed-use architecture, hospitality, education and corporate - not just in the USA but around the world. The buildings designed by John Portman and Associates have received numerous accolades, and many of those designs feature in this attractive casebound volume.

Catalan architect and colleague of Gaudi.

Josep Maria Jujol (1879-1949) developed his unusual architectural style through many years of close, creative collaboration with Antoni Gaudi. Jujol’s work is characterized by a high degree of sensibility to the forms of nature, an emphatically anti-geometric aesthetic, attention to workmanship and detail, as well as the imaginative use of old and previously utilized material. It is an eloquent expression of his affection for the Catalonian landscape, his modesty, and deep religious faith.

Julius Shulman (Photographer)
ID: 4138
Издательство: Taschen

The buildings burned in our memories, which to us represent the spirit of fifties and sixties architectural design, were those whose pictures were widely published in magazines and books; but what about those that got lost in the process, hardly or never appearing in publication?

The exchange of visual information is crucial to the development, evolution, and promotion of architectural movements. If a building is not widely seen, its photograph rarely or never published, it simply does not enter into architectural discourse. Many buildings photographed by Julius Shulman suffered this fate, their images falling into oblivion. With this book, TASCHEN brings them to light, paying homage to California Modernism in all its forms.

The abandoned files of Julius Shulman show us another side of Modernism that has stayed quiet for so many years. Bringing together nearly 250 forgotten masterpieces, Modernism Rediscovered pays tribute to these lesser known yet outstanding contributions to the modern architectural movement. It's like sneaking into a private history, into homes that have rarely been seen and hardly appreciated as of yet.

About the photographer:
A resident of Los Angeles since 1920, Julius Shulman has been documenting modernist architecture in Southern California and across the globe for nearly eight decades. His images of Pierre Koenig's Case Study House No. 22 (1960) in Los Angeles and Richard J. Neutra's Kaufmann House (1947) in Palm Springs are among the most recognizable and iconic architectural photographs of the 20th century. Shulman's interest in photography developed into a career when he photographed Neutra's Kun Residence in Los Angeles with his Kodak Vestpocket camera in 1936. Neutra admired young Shulman's images and continued to commission his work. Other leading architects of the time followed suit, as did hundreds of magazines, newspapers, and book publishers. Shulman's numerous awards include the Architectural Photography Medal from the American Institute of Architects (1969), a lifetime achievement award from the International Center of Photography in New York (1998), and honorary doctorates from various academic institutions.
