The quality of light in Scandinavia has given rise to some of the most important and influential architecture of the modern period. This book celebrates established icons, newly discovered gems and contemporary masterworks that represent the highest expression of Scandinavian design and response to their environment.
Highly refined building techniques combined with the stark contrast between the scarcity of light in winter and the glow of long summer days have provided the context for architectural acts of genius.
Just under fifty projects are featured here in detail, ordered according to the way in which different light conditions have imparted particular qualities to the buildings.
Henry Plummer has a uniquely authoritative perspective and his words resonate directly with his own artfully taken images.
Books that give a true sense of the magical light that have shaped great buildings are rare: this is a publication to savour.
Norman Bel Geddes Designs America accompanies a landmark exhibition exploring the career of Norman Bel Geddes (1893–1958), one of the 20th century’s foremost theatrical and industrial designers. This companion volume explores Bel Geddes’s life and career in comprehensive detail through nearly 100 projects, ranging from streamlined airplanes, ships, and cars, to stage sets, appliances, and much more. Both the exhibition and the book bring together never-before-seen drawings, models, photographs, and films drawn from the Ransom Center’s Bel Geddes collection. He is perhaps best known for his Futurama display for the General Motors Highways and Horizons exhibit at the New York World’s Fair of 1939–40, which to this day remains a useful model for city planning and design. The exhibition is curated by Donald Albrecht, who contributed the book’s introduction and serves as its editor. In addition to Albrecht, who has written the introduction, twenty scholars have contributed essays.
Now in an updated and expanded edition, an invaluable guide to the work of one of the world's leading architects. Highlighting recent projects, Norman Foster: Catalogue traces the development of the Foster studio from its formation in the 1960s to the present. More than 70 buildings and projects are featured in stunning full-color photographs and complemented by architectural sketches and drawings. The book examines the distinctive features of Foster's work and shows the full range of the practice's achievements as urban planners, architects, and industrial designers. Underlying Foster and Partners' use of new technologies are concerns with sustainability and environmental issues in their designs.
Organized by themes, it includes the studio's latest buildings such as the Beijing Airport along with other important projects such as the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, D.C., the Hearst Tower in New York, the Great Court at the British Museum in London, and the distinctive new headquarters tower for Swiss Re- winner of the 2004 Stirling Prize. Including numerous current works, unbuilt projects such as Foster's design for the World Trade Center competition, as well as buildings that showcase the essential characteristics of Foster's distinctive design philosophy, this book presents a comprehensive overview of the renowned architect's career to date.
Nouvel vague. France's leading architect
Jean Nouvel, the winner of the 2008 Pritzker Prize, is widely regarded as France’s most original and important contemporary architect. From 1967 to 1970 he assisted influential architects Claude Parent and Paul Virilio, before creating his own practice in Paris. His first widely acclaimed project was the Institut du Monde Arabe in Paris (1981–87). Since then he has completed the Lyon Opera House and the Fondation Cartier, Paris.
His major completed projects since 2000 include the Culture and Convention Center in Lucerne, Switzerland, the spectacular Agbar Tower in Barcelona, the Quai Branly Museum in Paris, the Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and the Hotel Sofitel Vienna Stephansdom with shopping mall. Jean Nouvel was the 2001 recipient of the RIBA Royal Gold Medal for Architecture. In his citation, Peter Cook said of Nouvel: "In an age of blandness, imitation, or doubt, his work shines through as having both clarity and finesse, originality and lyricism."

With Casey Dunn’s stunning photography, Oasis will transport you to these relaxing refuges, where you’ll learn what elements create the balance of intentionality, ease, style, and function that these homes exude.

Josep Lluнs Mateo is one of Spain's most influential architects in architecture today. This book brings together his recent projects, his influences, his references together with material from interviews and a wealth of images. It is, in a nutshell, his work philosophy. Conversations, reflections and projects completed in the last five years are presented as realities and actions, interpreted through this concept, which can be contemplated as infinity of individual forms of contacting with reality and acting upon it. For Josep Lluнs Mateo, the crux of this work is to analyse, from the perspective of his unique work, the state of issues and situations today in architecture and to interact accordingly with exterior space.

Modern society has adopted the work space as a second habitation, although it can also be considered as the most important space of habitation, the first home for most of the population, who spend far more time in front of the computer and the telephone than sitting on the sofa in their true homes. For this reason some of the greatest advances in technology and construction concentrate on making the working environment more pleasant and favourable…
At the beginning of the 19th century, Charles Fourrier observed that citizens’ lives were marked not by the home but by the office; 200 years later, this somewhat eccentric statement expresses the reality of post-industrial society: In Western countries, one of the consequences of the globalization of the economy has been the concentration of workers in the tertiary sector; more than half of the population works in offices. Offices have become domestic, the relationship between workmates has become closer and their workplace seems increasingly like a club or house in which they spend the greater part of the day. All presented projects feature inspiring ideas of designing more efficient, modern and more pleasant working environments.
