Ros Byam Shaw
ID: 2274
Издательство: Ryland Peters & Small / CICO books
350 colour photographs
Most of us live in an old building. It may not be very old, but it is more than likely to be older than we are. Updating and inhabiting an old building brings both pleasures and challenges. In Old House New Home, acclaimed interiors writer Ros Byam Shaw looks at the many different ways we can furnish and arrange an old building to suit todays needs, whether it is a country cottage, a terraced townhouse or a converted factory. Exploring properties as diverse as a small Victorian townhouse and a former country dairy, she reveals how the design of each home has been reinvented for the 21st century. The book is divided into a series of key styles: Period Piece, Urban Chic, Rustic, Recycled Spaces and Country House.

Stained glass has long been a part of domestic architecture, but in the late 1800s its popularity soared. In part, this was due to new manufacturing techniques and distribution networks, but also it caught the imagination of Victorian, Art Nouveau, and Arts and Crafts designers around the world.

Here over 350 examples of architectural stained glass span several countries and many years. The styles range from Victorian intricacy to the geometry of the Prairie School. This second edition includes etched glass and beveled constructions, in addition to leaded windows.

Each piece is illustrated in color, with dimensions and current market values. Today, stained glass, both old and new, is again finding its way into the home. It makes a delightful accent in a transom or a glorious complete wall.

This book will help readers understand and appreciate many varieties of old stained glass, and will inspire new work by artists.

David Naylor
ID: 4036
Издательство: Gibbs Smith Publishers

Interior designer David Naylor embraces the broad range of possibilities presented by a world of materials old and new, of objects both found and manufactured.

He calls his approach "infusion design," by which he means capturing the ideas of the Old World without forgetting about the present, stirring melting pots of cultures and allowing opposites to coexist, and pulling together objects from around the world. The timelessness, natural warmth, and adaptability of the popular Southwestern style aesthetic provide an appealing backdrop for his interpretations, which eschew the clichés while retaining the essence.

The architectural elements of the region-round beams, adobe walls, natural wood finishes-create a versatile aesthetic that can embrace an infinite variety of designs, while the nomadic nature of Americans generally, who move freely about the country bringing their favourite decor items with them, makes for limitless opportunities to infuse designs with intriguing juxtapositions and unexpected placements.

With increased attention to sustainability and environmental concerns, landscape architects now lead teams of urban planners and architects in developing new outdoor space and reconfiguring existing designs. As the preeminent landscape architecture firm in the United States, Olin is at the forefront of this movement with completed projects across the country and in Europe. The firm was awarded the gold medal of the American Society of Landscape Architects, the profession's highest honor, in 2006.

Well-known for the restorations of Bryant Park behind the New York Public Library and the landscape of the Washington Monument, Olin is also recognized for the dramatic transformation of a derelict, brownfield site into the vibrant Canary Wharf, now the financial center for all Europe, and for the landscape design of the J. Paul Getty Center in Los Angeles and Columbus Circle in New York. The firm has also designed sculpture gardens for the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., and the Toledo Museum of Art in Toledo, Ohio.

In dialogues with noted colleagues and collaborators, each of the partners articulates a personal vision and philosophy of landscape and design. Laurie Olin, founding partner, speaks with the poet Michael Palmer, while Susan Weiler reflects on her collaboration with artist Jenny Holzer. Other dialogue participants are Kim Tripp, former director of the New York Botanical Garden; Niall Kirkwood, chair of the landscape architecture department at Harvard; Sean Timmons, founder of Simmons Design Engineering; and Charles Waldheim, a leading proponent of landscape urbanism. Taken together, these conversations provide a unique window into the creative process.

Edited by Thomas Messel with an introduction by Lord Snowdon, an epilogue by Anthony Powell and texts by Stephen Calloway, Keith Lodwick, Jeremy Musson, and Sarah Woodcock

Яркая и насыщенная жизнь одной из знаковых фигур дизайна XX века – архитектора, декоратора Оливера Меселя. Более 200 страниц эксцентричного творчества, включающие не публиковавшиеся ранее снимки.

A vibrant study of one of the iconic figures of twentieth-century design, whose Romantic, whimsical, and wholly original style influenced a generation of architects and decorators. Oliver Messel was one of England’s foremost interior designers of the twentieth century, whose work also spanned the worlds of the stage design, film, and architecture. Born into a creative family of wealthy bankers, his career began in 1925 designing for Sergei Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes. He eventually became an internationally celebrated designer, branching out into drama, film, opera, interior design, textiles, and architecture. Romanticism and eccentricity were hallmarks of Messel’s style. His sets were famed for their exquisite delicacy, impossible detail, subtlety of color, and inventive use of materials. From the 1930s to the postwar period, Messel explored the fields of interior design and architecture, eventually designing numerous houses built on the islands of Mustique and Barbados for the jet set of the 1960s and ‘70s, among them Antony Armstrong-Jones (Earl of Snowdon) and Princess Margaret. Oliver Messel is filled with previously unpublished images that chronicle a unique, eccentric, and, until now, largely overlooked oeuvre that reached across several mediums and continues to influence insiders from the worlds of interior design, architecture, and fashion.

About the Authors:

Thomas Messel, the nephew of Oliver Messel, is a furniture designer and is responsible for the refurbishment of two of Oliver Messel's design projects: Dorchester Hotel, Flaxley Abbey. Antony Armstrong-Jones, Lord Snowdon, is a photographer and filmmaker. Anthony Powell is a costume designer for stage and screen. Stephen Calloway is the author of Obsessions: Collectors and Their Passions and The Elements of Style: A Practical Encyclopedia of Interior Architectural Details from 1485 to the Present. Sarah Woodcock is a curator at the Victoria and Albert Museum's Theatre Museum. Jeremy Musson is an architectural historian, writer, and broadcaster.

The People's Republic of China is currently the largest market for architectural services in the world, and its cities - sites of the greatest economic migration in modern history - are rapidly being transformed into rival centers for global trade and commerce. On the Edge: Ten Architects from China is an unprecedented critical anthology on new architecture in China, the first book of its kind devoted to the development and maturation of an indigenous approach to modern architecture and urbanism in China. Focusing on the work of ten young design firms based in mainland China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan, On the Edge documents the rise of a new aesthetic, the evolution of contemporary architectural practice, and the irresistible, global aspirations of an emerging avant-garde.Included in the book are completed buildings, proposed projects, and urban master plans by Gary Chang of Edge HK, Rocco Yim, Zi and Ming Zhang of Original Design Studio, Li Hu of Open Architecture Studio, Ai We Wei, Qingyun Ma of MADA, Jiakun Liu, and Yung Ho Chang, who is the present dean of the Architecture School at MIT.

A porch can change the way you live in your house--it can entirely change the way your house looks--it can change the way you relate to your neighborhood. There is, simply, something magical about a porch. It slows you down, it tells you to take some time, to read the paper, to sip a glass of lemonade, to watch the weather roll in. For those dreaming of a front porch or those with porches in need of redesign, On the Porch will be their bible, the only book to cover the topic from porch types to planning and design, to tips on good construction, to maintenance and porch adornment (lighting, overhead fans, rockers, hanging plants, trellising). An important component of the book will be showing, using before and after photos, how adding a porch can entirely change the look of your home.

The urge to create an individualized shopping experience is a major trend around the world and consequently a new generation of independent shops has grown up. Mostly small, they set up against the odds and have to make an effort with their exteriors, interiors and branding to attract customers. Some are a triumph of ingenuity on a low budget, while others are as glamorous as their big-name counterparts. The interiors and graphics are either created by professional designers or by the owners themselves. This trend is now so widespread that the corporate retailers who sparked the reaction in the first place are getting in on the act, commissioning one-off outlets and short-term guerrilla stores to appeal to a more savvy, funky young clientele. One-Off is the first book to address this important retail trend. It covers food, home and lifestyle, fashion and accessories, random gems and pretenders and guerrilla stores.
