Phillip James Dodd
ID: 15466
Издательство: Images

In the follow-up to the critically acclaimed The Art of Classical Details, Phillip James Dodd continues his look at some of the finest examples of contemporary classical architecture in Great Britain and the United States, while also examining how collaboration is the key to their successful design. In reality, collaborative relationships are rare, especially amongst designers, where each is often focused on their own individual objectives and unable to transcend their own egos. Often used as a catch phase, but not often realised, true collaboration requires an understanding – and an appreciation – of the role that all parties play in the design and construction of a home. An Ideal Collaboration includes the work of some of the most notable names in contemporary residential design. Architects, decorators, landscape designers, consultants, builders, craftsmen, artists and vendors, all address the design process and the pivotal role that collaboration plays in creating cohesive timeless designs.

- The most definitive book on 'classical detailing' in years
- Covers all the fundamentals of classical architecture
- Features a foreword by Ellie Cullmann
- Includes projects by Quinlan Terry, perhaps the most well-known classical architect practising today
- Other UK architects include Robert Adam and Hugh Petter, Julian Bicknell, Robert Franklin, Digby Harris and John Simpson

“Showcasing 25 residences by today’s leading classical architects, this wonderful new book also addresses the fundamental issue of collaboration between architect, decorator, landscaper, and the enormous cast of characters who bring their formidable talents to the realization of every project. An Ideal Collaboration is an important addition to the literature of architecture and design.” – Ellie Cullman

An Ideal Collaboration shares a place in my library next to volumes on great 20th-century Classicists. It is essential as a visual reference to the continued evolution of timeless style.” – Steven Gambrel

About the Author:

A native of Manchester, England, Phillip James Dodd attended the prestigious Prince of Wales' Institute of Architecture in London - where he was taught by many of the architects featured in this book. He received a Degree in Architecture from his hometown university, before moving to America, where he gained a Masters in Architecture from the University of Notre Dame. As a well-regarded expert on classical architecture and interiors, Phillip has worked for some of the most recognized residential architectural firms in America. He is a Fellow Emeritus at the Institute of Classical Architecture (ICA), and Classical America (CA), where from 2006 to 2009 he served as the jury coordinator for the annual Arthur Ross Awards. He has taught classical design at the ICA & CA and at Notre Dame, and has been a guest critic for the Interiors Departments at Parson's School of Design and the Fashion Institute of Technology.

Michael Webb
ID: 12170
Издательство: Thames & Hudson

Thirty pioneering houses designed by architects for themselves over the past decade, revealing the ingenious ways they have addressed the challenges of creating a contemporary living space

Thirty of the world’s leading architects, including Norman Foster, Thom Mayne, Tod Williams and Billie Tsien, talk about the houses they designed for themselves over the past decade. What inspired them, what were the constraints, how did their concepts take shape? Michael Webb explores the creative process and traces the influence of architects’ houses over the past two hundred years, from Jefferson’s Monticello to the creations of Charles and Ray Eames, Toyo Ito and Frank Gehry.

Texts, images, sketches and plans are interwoven to illustrate houses that differ widely, in size, material, character and location. There are urban infills, rustic retreats, experiments, and fusions of new and old. They all make a statement, modest or ambitious, and each reflects the personality and tastes of its owner. These architects have accepted the challenge of doing something out of the ordinary, turning constraints to advantage. They give different answers to a crucial question: how can a house enrich lives and its surroundings? Spacious or frugal, refined or rough-edged, daring or reductive, these adventurous dwellings will inspire other architects and everyone who would like to design or commission a house that is one-of-a-kind.

About the Author:

Michael Webb is a Los Angeles-based writer who has authored more than twenty books on architecture and design, most recently Architects' Houses, and Building Community: New Apartment Architecture, while contributing essays to many more. He is also a regular contributor to leading journals in the United States and Europe. Growing up in London, he was an editor at The Times and Country Life, before moving to the US. He was awarded an honorary membership in the Los Angeles chapter of the American Institute of Architects, and made a Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres for his services to French culture.
