An inspiring showcase of masterpieces of the Shingle Style.

A richly photographed presentation of some of the most important Shingle Style houses built in America, this book gives readers a privileged view into the splendid interiors of these late-nineteenth- and early-twentieth-century masterpieces of domestic design. Shingle Style traces the path of shingle-clad residential architecture from its Romantic beginnings to the current dizzying variety of architectural ideas — from modern to historicist, green to organic — expressed in the Shingle Style.

David Duncan Livingston’s full-colour photographs exquisitely capture these architectural masterpieces, complete with delightful original interior details, and authors Lucia Howard and David Weingarten place these houses in their proper historical context as examples of the best American Shingle Style design.

Since signage systems are created to provide orientation, they must be universally legible and understood by people of all ages and culture. Signs must show the way, and also present the proper information at the proper location. By making effective use of graphics, colors and shapes, a signage system helps to create an identity for spaces.

Signage Designs showcases a great variety of current examples from across the world, indoor and outdoor, ranging from individual buildings like museums, hospitals and stadiums, to larger contexts like subway systems, town districts or entire cities. This title is an essential reference for designers involved in communications, architects, interior designers and indeed for creative persons in all sectors.

Text by Chiara Dal Canto, Photographs by Lorenzo Pennati

Издательство: Rizzoli

This inspiring volume takes readers on a tour of luxurious interiors that showcase the best of Italian design and architecture.

As part of the series dedicated to “Made in Italy” architecture and design (Carlo Scarpa, Piero Portaluppi), this latest book features a stunning collection of interiors by acclaimed Italian designers and architects from the second half of the twentieth century. Each of these exquisite spaces perfectly embodies the designer’s unique creative spirit, encapsulating both the essence of the designer’s personal style and taste with the trends of the era.

The ten projects, all specially photographed for the book, include such names in Italian architecture and design as: Carlo Mollino, Carlo Scarpa, Ettore Sottsass, Gae Aulenti, Osvaldo Borsani, Piero and Barnaba Fornasetti, among others. Ranging from residential to office spaces, each of these unique spaces has remained largely unchanged, and decades later they still speak for those who conceived of and inhabited them: Casa Fornasetti provides a unique testimony to the world of Piero Fornasetti, and now that of his son, Barnaba, who carries on his work and brand with strength and innovation; Casa Mollino represents the peak of architect Carlo Mollino’s ideas, beautifully serving as his aesthetic and conceptual legacy; and the vibrant, ironic, colorful Casa Quarestani perfectly sums up the poetic vision of Ettore Sottsass.

This book will be a must have for lovers of bold design and stylish Italian interiors.

Like in the past the towers of the cathedrals, skyscrapers became the defining features of cityscapes with the advent of the 20th century. Since the turn of the millennium, they are again among the most prestigious and coveted architectural challenges. The design freedom of contours and the plastic volume of blobs have long since superseded the purely orthogonal towers of the past.

Most current projects are being implemented in the Arab-Asian realm, such as the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, the world's highest building. At the same time, in the USA, the native home of skyscrapers, new towers are also under construction – and also in Europe buildings are reaching for the sky. In addition to the key projects of this remarkable skyscraper renaissance, this volume presents the most spectacular towers still under construction as well as future-oriented experimental designs.

Enthralling room concepts and convincing spatial solutions for the efficient use of limited space

By living in a large ceramic tub, Ancient Greek philosopher Diogenes was one of the first people to promote a simple lifestyle as a protest against a corrupt society – one could call him an unwitting pioneer of the current tiny-house movement.

However, today small living is not necessarily connected to an alternative or even anarchic lifestyle – it simply makes things easier, more economical and eco-friendly to focus on what is really needed in life without compromising quality.

This volume presents a large variety of sophisticated solutions for mini houses in terms of architectural style, construction method and interior design. Whether portable or prefabricated, newly built or reused, rural or urban, they all meet the highest technological and sustainable standards to literally reduce their owners’ ecological footprint.

Lloyd Kahn
ID: 16510
Издательство: Shelter Publications

From the publishers of a popular series of building books comes Small Homes, which is highly relevant for these times. Getting smaller, rather than larger. Some 75 builders share their knowledge of building and design, with artistic, practical, and/or economical homes in the United States, Canada, England, Scotland, France, Germany, Spain, New Zealand and Lithuania.

This is the seventh in a series of highly-graphic books on homemade building, all of which are interrelated. The series, "The Shelter Library Of Building Books", include ShelterShelter II (1978), Home Work (2004), Builders of the Pacific Coast (2008), Tiny Homes (2012), and Tiny Homes on the Move (2014). Each of these books has over 1,000 photos, and each 2-page spread is carefully laid out with respect to balance of graphics and clarity of information.

A running theme with them is that people have been inspired by one book to build their own home, and this will be included in a subsequent book. For example, many of the homes in Home Work were inspired by Shelter. And so on.

The underlying theme with Shelter's books, which has continued for over 40 years, is that it's possible for you to create your own home with your own hands, using natural materials.

Some of these homes are in the country, some in small towns, and some in large cities.

About the Author:

Lloyd Kahn started building his own home in the early '60s and went on to publish books showing homeowners how they could build their own homes with their own hands.
He got his start in publishing by working as the shelter editor of the Whole Earth Catalog with Stewart Brand in the late '60s. He has since authored six highly-graphic books on homemade building, all of which are interrelated. The books, "The Shelter Library Of Building Books", include ShelterShelter II (1978), Home Work (2004), Builders of the Pacific Coast (2008), Tiny Homes (2012), and Tiny Homes on the Move (2014).
Lloyd operates from Northern California studio built of recycled lumber, set in the midst of a vegetable garden, and hooked into the world via five Mac computers.

Teddy Cruz, Fonna Forman
ID: 16660
Издательство: Hatje Cantz

At the intersection of architecture, art, public culture, and political theory, Socializing Architecture urges architects and urbanists to mobilize a new public imagination toward a more just and equitable urbanization. Drawn from decades of lived experience, Teddy Cruz and Fonna Forman engage the San Diego–Tijuana border region as a global laboratory to address the central challenges of urbanization today: deepening social and economic inequality, dramatic migratory shifts, explosive urban informality, climate disruption, the thickening of border walls, and the decline of public thinking. Following Spatializing Justice, Socializing Architecture is the second part of a two-volume monograph. It continues to build a compelling case for architects and urban designers to intervene in the contested space between public and private interests. Through analysis and diverse case studies, the authors demonstrate strategies for altering exclusionary urban policies and advancing instead a more equitable and convivial architecture.

Professors Cruz and Forman are principals in Estudio Teddy Cruz + Fonna Forman, a research-based political and architectural practice in San Diego. They lead a variety of urban research agendas and civic/public interventions in the San Diego–Tijuana border region and beyond. They also direct the University of California, San Diego’s Center on Global Justice, which focuses on community-based solutions to poverty and environmental crisis.

Jorge S. Arango and Orlando Diaz-Azcuy
ID: 15823
Издательство: Rizzoli

The second monograph — the first having been published in 2009 — on one of today’s most celebrated designers, renowned for being one of the earliest creators of a modernism that is soft, warm, and lyrical.

San Francisco–based Orlando Diaz-Azcuy’s mastery of the home interior has made him one of America’s most renowned designers. Regarded by professionals as a “dean of interior design” and a pioneer of minimalist design since the early 1980s, Diaz-Azcuy has been a major influence in the worlds of interior architecture and design. Bringing soul to modernism is Diaz-Azcuy’s greatest legacy, as well as the subject of this book. Each residence featured in these pages is essentially simple, functional and beautiful, achieved with exactitude, attention to detail and craftsmanship.

Diaz-Azcuy’s elegantly composed rooms speak volumes for his spare, intelligent, and disciplined touch. His interiors—located in Miami and New York as well as San Francisco — combine architecturally clean lines and an urbane sensibility with smart flashes of bold color or a pedigreed period statement piece to balance a curated look. By orchestrating textural richness, honest materiality, and judiciously deployed global artifacts and art in perfectly calibrated measure, Diaz-Azcuy transforms modernism into something eminently livable, pioneering a new style that has become ubiquitous today.

About the Author:

Orlando Diaz-Azcuy has been a designer for fifty years and founded Orlando Diaz-Azcuy Design Associates in 1987. He is a member of Interior Design magazine’s Hall of Fame. Jorge S. Arango is a design writer, editor, and producer whose work has appeared in Metropolitan HomeRobb ReportArt & Antiques, and Country Living.

Roberto Conte and Stefano Perego

A fantastic collection of Soviet Asian architecture, many photographed here for the first time

Soviet Asia explores the Soviet modernist architecture of Central Asia. Italian photographers Roberto Conte and Stefano Perego crossed the former Soviet republics of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan, documenting buildings constructed from the 1950s until the fall of the USSR.

The resulting images showcase the majestic, largely unknown, modernist buildings of the region. Museums, housing complexes, universities, circuses, ritual palaces – all were constructed using a composite aesthetic. Influenced by Persian and Islamic architecture, pattern and mosaic motifs articulated a connection with Central Asia. Grey concrete slabs were juxtaposed with colourful tiling and rectilinear shapes broken by ornate curved forms: the brutal designs normally associated with Soviet-era architecture were reconstructed with Eastern characteristics.
