Lloyd Kahn
ID: 16510
Издательство: Shelter Publications

From the publishers of a popular series of building books comes Small Homes, which is highly relevant for these times. Getting smaller, rather than larger. Some 75 builders share their knowledge of building and design, with artistic, practical, and/or economical homes in the United States, Canada, England, Scotland, France, Germany, Spain, New Zealand and Lithuania.

This is the seventh in a series of highly-graphic books on homemade building, all of which are interrelated. The series, "The Shelter Library Of Building Books", include ShelterShelter II (1978), Home Work (2004), Builders of the Pacific Coast (2008), Tiny Homes (2012), and Tiny Homes on the Move (2014). Each of these books has over 1,000 photos, and each 2-page spread is carefully laid out with respect to balance of graphics and clarity of information.

A running theme with them is that people have been inspired by one book to build their own home, and this will be included in a subsequent book. For example, many of the homes in Home Work were inspired by Shelter. And so on.

The underlying theme with Shelter's books, which has continued for over 40 years, is that it's possible for you to create your own home with your own hands, using natural materials.

Some of these homes are in the country, some in small towns, and some in large cities.

About the Author:

Lloyd Kahn started building his own home in the early '60s and went on to publish books showing homeowners how they could build their own homes with their own hands.
He got his start in publishing by working as the shelter editor of the Whole Earth Catalog with Stewart Brand in the late '60s. He has since authored six highly-graphic books on homemade building, all of which are interrelated. The books, "The Shelter Library Of Building Books", include ShelterShelter II (1978), Home Work (2004), Builders of the Pacific Coast (2008), Tiny Homes (2012), and Tiny Homes on the Move (2014).
Lloyd operates from Northern California studio built of recycled lumber, set in the midst of a vegetable garden, and hooked into the world via five Mac computers.

Teddy Cruz, Fonna Forman
ID: 16660
Издательство: Hatje Cantz

At the intersection of architecture, art, public culture, and political theory, Socializing Architecture urges architects and urbanists to mobilize a new public imagination toward a more just and equitable urbanization. Drawn from decades of lived experience, Teddy Cruz and Fonna Forman engage the San Diego–Tijuana border region as a global laboratory to address the central challenges of urbanization today: deepening social and economic inequality, dramatic migratory shifts, explosive urban informality, climate disruption, the thickening of border walls, and the decline of public thinking. Following Spatializing Justice, Socializing Architecture is the second part of a two-volume monograph. It continues to build a compelling case for architects and urban designers to intervene in the contested space between public and private interests. Through analysis and diverse case studies, the authors demonstrate strategies for altering exclusionary urban policies and advancing instead a more equitable and convivial architecture.

Professors Cruz and Forman are principals in Estudio Teddy Cruz + Fonna Forman, a research-based political and architectural practice in San Diego. They lead a variety of urban research agendas and civic/public interventions in the San Diego–Tijuana border region and beyond. They also direct the University of California, San Diego’s Center on Global Justice, which focuses on community-based solutions to poverty and environmental crisis.

Jorge S. Arango and Orlando Diaz-Azcuy
ID: 15823
Издательство: Rizzoli

The second monograph — the first having been published in 2009 — on one of today’s most celebrated designers, renowned for being one of the earliest creators of a modernism that is soft, warm, and lyrical.

San Francisco–based Orlando Diaz-Azcuy’s mastery of the home interior has made him one of America’s most renowned designers. Regarded by professionals as a “dean of interior design” and a pioneer of minimalist design since the early 1980s, Diaz-Azcuy has been a major influence in the worlds of interior architecture and design. Bringing soul to modernism is Diaz-Azcuy’s greatest legacy, as well as the subject of this book. Each residence featured in these pages is essentially simple, functional and beautiful, achieved with exactitude, attention to detail and craftsmanship.

Diaz-Azcuy’s elegantly composed rooms speak volumes for his spare, intelligent, and disciplined touch. His interiors—located in Miami and New York as well as San Francisco — combine architecturally clean lines and an urbane sensibility with smart flashes of bold color or a pedigreed period statement piece to balance a curated look. By orchestrating textural richness, honest materiality, and judiciously deployed global artifacts and art in perfectly calibrated measure, Diaz-Azcuy transforms modernism into something eminently livable, pioneering a new style that has become ubiquitous today.

About the Author:

Orlando Diaz-Azcuy has been a designer for fifty years and founded Orlando Diaz-Azcuy Design Associates in 1987. He is a member of Interior Design magazine’s Hall of Fame. Jorge S. Arango is a design writer, editor, and producer whose work has appeared in Metropolitan HomeRobb ReportArt & Antiques, and Country Living.

Roberto Conte and Stefano Perego
ID: 13032
Издательство: Fuel

A fantastic collection of Soviet Asian architecture, many photographed here for the first time

Soviet Asia explores the Soviet modernist architecture of Central Asia. Italian photographers Roberto Conte and Stefano Perego crossed the former Soviet republics of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan, documenting buildings constructed from the 1950s until the fall of the USSR.

The resulting images showcase the majestic, largely unknown, modernist buildings of the region. Museums, housing complexes, universities, circuses, ritual palaces – all were constructed using a composite aesthetic. Influenced by Persian and Islamic architecture, pattern and mosaic motifs articulated a connection with Central Asia. Grey concrete slabs were juxtaposed with colourful tiling and rectilinear shapes broken by ornate curved forms: the brutal designs normally associated with Soviet-era architecture were reconstructed with Eastern characteristics.

Author Pamela Skewes-Cox and Robert Sweeney, Introduction by C. Ford Peatross, Photographs by Matt Walla
ID: 15979
Издательство: Rizzoli

An ode to the classic Spanish-style houses of Santa Barbara. Spanish Colonial Style celebrates an extraordinary tradition in architecture whose hallmarks include whitewashed stucco and plaster walls, wood-beamed ceilings, dramatic fireplaces, and, above all, mystery and romance. Homes in this much-loved style of architecture welcome the visitor and embrace the resident, and architects James Osborne Craig and Mary McLaughlin Craig, early proponents of the style and influential disseminators of it, were masters of the form. Their work, until now, has been largely underappreciated and little seen.

The Craigs played pivotal roles in the development of the Spanish Colonial Revival and of other styles of architecture in Santa Barbara, and the influence of their work spread much beyond that. In addition to shining a long overdue spotlight on the rich career of these tremendously influential architects, Spanish Colonial Style also heralds Santa Barbara as the small city of international importance that it became in the first half of the twentieth century.

About the Author:

Pamela Skewes-Cox is an artist and writer based in Massachusetts. Robert Sweeney is the author of Casa del Herrero: The Romance of Spanish Colonial. C. Ford Peatross is founding director of the Center for Architecture, Design, and Engineering at the Library of Congress. Matt Walla is the photographer of Casa del Herrero.

Introduction by Paul Goldberger
ID: 15827
Издательство: Rizzoli

Beautiful, bespoke, environmentally sensitive houses by the award-winning architecture firm known for clean, modern, soulful design. This is the first book on the firm’s work.

Modern houses that are timeless, thoughtfully detailed, marked by innovative and environmentally friendly design, and inevitably situated close to nature — by the sea, on the bluff, upon the dunes — are the hallmark of Stelle Lomont Rouhani.

From Casa Loma and Lazy Point to House on the Point, mere mention of the homes is enough to inspire visions of some contemporary Xanadu. But it is the specifics, the careful use of materials, the very close attention to place, bespoke furniture and fixtures, and above all a sensitivity to those who will live in the spaces created that make these extraordinary works of architecture such beloved dwellings.

With thought to an ultimate experience of comfort, to space and light, to views, and to a way of living beside nature that is considerate of nature, the architects open walls toward the sea and position decks to allow for the enjoyment of morning sunlight and scented breezes redolent of bayberries and pine. Ultimately it is a kind of harmony the architects are after and doing more with less, a Zen-like quality that renews the spirit, offering serenity and repose — and which, in the houses featured here, they so warmly, so quietly find.

About the Author:

Paul Goldberger is contributing editor at Vanity Fair and former architecture critic for The New Yorker and holds the Joseph Urban Chair in Design and Architecture at The New School. He was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Criticism in 1984 for his work with the New York Times.

Written by Stephen Sills, Foreword by Karl Lagerfeld, Photographed by François Halard
ID: 10458
Издательство: Rizzoli

The first book to focus on the solo residential work of the visionary interior decorator Stephen Sills.

Simultaneously classical and modern, Stephen Sills’s design work is a dialogue between past and present. Filled with luxurious fabrics, furnishings from across centuries, and unusual finishes, his work is polished, seemingly effortless, and quietly rich, with a muted colour palette that serves as a brilliant foil for modern art.

In this striking, meditative volume, the follow-up to his best-selling book Dwellings, Sills presents sixteen breathtaking homes, gorgeously photographed by the legendary François Halard, in locations as varied as a penthouse on Manhattan’s Fifth Avenue, a modern Aspen retreat, an estate on the North Shore of Long Island, and his own country house in Bedford, New York (dubbed the "chicest house in America" by Karl Lagerfeld).

Common to them all is a sense of atmosphere, point of view, and soul — the sense of a master craftsman at work.

About the Authors:

Stephen Sills is one of the most lauded interior designers working today. Originally a partner in the formidable team Sills Huniford Associates, his clients have included Vera Wang, the Newhouse family, Tina Turner, Anna Wintour, and the Rockefeller family. His designs have been featured in Architectural Digest, Elle Décor, House & Garden, Vogue, Maison & Jardin, W, New York Magazine, and the New York Times, as well as in numerous books. He is a member of the AD100 and was included in AD’s "30 Deans of American Design." He was recently included in Elle Décor’s list of the top 25 designers and received the Creative Spirit Award from the Pratt Institute in 2012.
