About the Authors:

Maria Hummer Tuttle practiced law for more than 25 years. She served as chairman of the Getty Board of Trustees and is on the board of numerous museums, arts foundations, and foreign policy, government, and education organizations. She is the co-author of Winfield House, written while her husband was American ambassador to the UK. She lives in Los Angeles and New York.
Edmund de Waal is a British ceramist renowned for his large scale installations of porcelain vessels and the author of award winning books, including The Hare with Amber Eyes: A Hidden Inheritance and The White Road: Journey into an Obsession. He lives in London.
Miguel Flores Vianna is a photographer and writer whose work appears regularly in a variety of leading international publications. His books include Haute Bohemians and A Wandering Eye: Travels with My Phone. He lives in London.

Dominic Bradbury is a writer and freelance journalist specializing in architecture and design. Rehabilitations of living spaces are often done to reanimate existing constructions that, over time, have become impractical, if not obsolete. AD100 and Elle Decor A-List Interior Designer Oliver M. Furth is principal of his eponymous studio founded in 2005, and a fixture in the Los Angeles design and cultural communities. He also consults for The Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) and is Chair Emeritus of their Decorative Arts and Design Council.

The glorious Connecticut property of Heide Hendricks and Rafe Churchill (of the architecture and interior design firm Hendricks Churchill) illustrates how a late nineteenth-century farmhouse can be adapted for stylish and comfortable twenty-first-century living.

Rafe and Heide discovered their true home in a late 1800s New England farmhouse after a decade of living in Brooklyn, New York. John Volk was one of the “big five” architects of Palm Beach. This book is about the Volks, and the part they played in conjuring the spell with which Palm Beach continues to enchant.

Palm Beach, among other things, is its architecture. Red tile roofs and cast stone columns hint of the Mediterranean. Evidence of inspirations from Spain and Morocco abound. After the economic collapse of 1929, the classical architectural orders began to appear on columns and porticos. The Bermuda style and Modernism made an appearance later. Yet there is no one style exclusively associated Volk; here he perfected many styles and his architectural legacy can be found on almost every street.

While this book honors John Volk’s architecture and his enormous impact, it also celebrates Jane Volk’s contribution to Palm Beach and her devotion to protecting the town and its historic character.
