The colors black and white have for centuries represented inimitable luxury and unparalleled glamour. Think of tuxedos and little black dresses, or beautifully styled interiors featuring a mix of high white period ceilings and black, mid-century modern furniture.
Designers have known about the power of this impeccable pairing for years, and these monochromatic tones are again at the forefront of international design.

Stephen Crafti has always been drawn to black houses, irrespective of the materials they are constructed from be they zinc, timber or simply painted. Unlike many modern houses that scream for attention, black houses sit quietly in the landscape, accentuating the often verdant landscape. There is also a sense of calm and tranquillity about a black home.
Crafti doesn't live in a black house, but he recently upgraded a 1930s home. Everything I touched was changed to black, from the timber fences to the timber floorboards. I even added black curtains and planted black beared irises in his garden. Using black seemed to unify disparate elements in and around his home. While there are numerous black features in Crafti's house, his ideal would be to live in a contemporary black house, with black furniture and black walls. And maybe even a garden filled with black plants. This book, showcasing black houses, is the starting point towards this goal.

More than any other element of interior design, color sets the mood of a room. Once the palette is limited to a single color, the effect can be dramatic and powerful or sublime. Monochrome features projects by more than twenty internationally known interior designers who have created rooms based around one color. Included are a blue bedroom by Vicente Wolf, a silver dining room for Baccarat by Philippe Starck, an ivory loft apartment by Lee Mindel of Shelton Mindel, and a purple bedroom by Benjamin Noriega. Neutral shades - grays, taupes, and beiges - and crisp, contemporary whites are featured in projects by M Group, Anthony Todd, Noel Jeffrey, and Michael Gabellini.
John Saladino, who is renowned for his cool, subtle tones, has written an introductory text. He touches on the different approaches to color over time and describes the effects created by using a single color in different textures and patterns of fabric and finishes.
Scandinavian style has long been associated with light, clean-lined spaces or pared-down monochrome interiors. However, in recent years the colour palette has seen a dramatic shift away from pale, cool shades and dramatic, darker and more characterful hues have begun to appear in stylish Nordic homes. Why have the Scandinavians suddenly welcomed colour in this way and how is it being used?
As well as discussing the theories behind this shift and analysis of the most popular colour schemes, in New Nordic Colour interiors writer Antonia af Petersen offers expert advice on choosing colour for your home. She goes on to visit 10 Nordic homes that are divided into three different types. 'Dark Eclectic' schemes feature deep, intense hues: dusk blue, storm grey, forest green and indigo, all inspired by the more dramatic tones of the Nordic landscape. 'Bold Accents' focuses on the details that stand out and add character – think deep red berry bushes or the russet tones of the northern birch forests in Autumn. Finally, in 'Majestic Pastels' Antonia provides a glimpse into interiors decorated in strong but subtle pastels for a remarkably modern effect.
These unique Nordic homes all have one thing in common – plain white walls and monochrome palettes have been replaced with rich, complex and vibrant hues.
Expertly curated by Pantone, the international colour authority, these 35 palettes make colour selection for home decor easy for anyone.
Brief text describes and contextualises each palette, offering fun and practical application for colour combos. A follow-up to the beloved first fan deck, these palettes are the perfect go-to guide for decorating living rooms, kitchens, nurseries or any other room in the house.
