Author Katia Lysy, Prologue by Benedetta Origo, Photographs by Simon Upton and Matteo Carassale
ID: 18300
Издательство: Rizzoli

Discover La Foce, the Renaissance villa and classically inspired twentieth-century garden, at the dawn of its hundredth anniversary — once a barren Tuscan estate brought to life through the extraordinary vision and determination of Iris and Antonio Origo.

In 1924, English-born biographer and writer Iris Origo (1902–1988) and her husband, Antonio, purchased La Foce, a sprawling estate centered around a half-ruined fifteenth-century villa with a dream that was as ambitious as it was audacious. Guided by a deep-seated desire to make a difference, the Origos dedicated their lives to transforming an impoverished terrain into a thriving landscape of wheat fields, olive groves, and vineyards. With English architect Cecil Pinsent, they refurbished the house and designed an elegant terraced garden with box hedges, a rose garden, fountains, and a wisteria-covered pergola.

The dramatic story of La Foce — from the taming of the wild valley and personal loss to wartime strife — is told by the Origos’ granddaughter Katia Lysy, with reminiscences by Benedetta Origo, the couple’s elder daughter. The letters and diaries of Iris Origo weave beautifully into a personal narrative of the creation of the property and the people behind it. Newly commissioned photographs by Simon Upton and Matteo Carassale, a foldout annotated view of the property, and a recently discovered cache of unpublished images of the creation of the garden in the 1920s bring to life the rich history of the magnificent property.

This is followed by an examination of project management and landscape management techniques. Finally, the book explores educational and employment opportunities and the future of the profession in the context of climate change and sustainability.

Illustrated with international examples of completed projects, Landscape Architecture provides an invaluable, one-stop resource for anyone considering studying or a career in this field.

The landscape architect visibly modifies land and open spaces with the objective of applying the most artistic transcription of architectural language by working with both animate and inanimate physical structures which arise from geographical and social structures, as well as various technical and economical situations. For this reason, the driving force behind any competent and creative planning solution is the imagination.

The landscaping projects featured in this book mainly illustrate designs adopted for new sites and the expert restoration of others, including some with very different uses.

This book represents an "account" interspersed with various projects, a theme which takes us from large landscaping projects in open spaces, whether on private properties or out in the wilds, to the more complex installations or structures such as landscape bridges.

Matthew Skjonsberg, Janet Parks
ID: 18878
Издательство: Park Books

Civic design: a practice in urban and landscape planning explicitly oriented towards the common good, maintaining healthy ecological habitats, and offering intergenerational and inclusive recreational opportunities through the creation of park systems.

The creation of park systems is a historically proven method for communities to stabilize and cultivate healthy ecological habitats in country dwellings as well as in dense urban areas. Park systems ensure clean soil, water, and air for all. Moreover, they offer intergenerational and inclusive recreational opportunities along ecological corridors. Between 1900 and 1950, civic design—a practice in urban and landscape planning explicitly oriented towards the common good—experienced a heyday. Park systems were successfully used as “green armatures” hosting public facilities such as playgrounds, schools, administrative buildings, hospitals, and gardens.

Living Cities offers a chronological survey of civic design based on more than 30 park systems on five continents. The examples range from Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's Park an der Ilm in Weimar (1778) and John Nash’s Regent Street in London (1806) to Chicago’s park system (1850), Albert Bodmer and Maurice Braillard’s plans for Geneva (1936), and Frank Lloyd Wright’s Taliesin Valley (1947), as well as to contemporary and future projects in Addis Ababa, Madrid, Medellín, New York, and Seoul. Matthew Skjonsberg’s book demonstrates the ecological and social impact of park systems and highlights the diverse challenges that communities face when implementing such projects. At the same time, it encourages a reevaluation of civic design as an intergenerational practice for creating human settlements.

About the Author:

Matthew Skjonsberg is a lecturer on the MAS in Urban and Territorial Design program at EPFL in Lausanne and the director of Praxis Institute, a Swiss-based trans-disciplinary experimental research initiative.

The stunning interiors and glorious gardens of New Orleans’s unrivaled jewel and architectural masterpiece. Longue Vue House and Gardens, accredited by the American Alliance of Museums and listed as a national historic landmark, was designed and built between 1934 and 1942 by landscape architect Ellen Biddle Shipman and architects Charles and William Platt for Edgar Bloom and Edith Rosenwald Stern, New Orleans’s foremost mid-twentieth-century philanthropists and civil-rights activists. The mansion and its surrounding eight acres of garden spaces, with varied designs ranging from the formal to the wild, draw upon Southern architectural traditions and native Louisiana flora, even as they echo the contemporaneous garden-design movement that set the stage for the creation of some of the most breathtaking garden estates in the country. Lush photography, supporting architectural drawings, and an informative text bring the main house and gardens to life and establish the estate as an enduring symbol to its creators’ contributions to building a just society.

About the Authors:

Charles Davey is the Design and Production Director for the Institute of Classical Architecture and Art’s magazine The Classicist, as well as a writer and independent book producer. His latest book, Fessenden House, about a house in Washington, DC, was privately published. Previous books include Carolands: Ernest Sanson, Achille Duchêne, and Willis Polk (San Mateo County Historical Association). He is currently reviewing other houses that deserve similar treatment to Carolands, Fessenden House, and Longue Vue. Carol McMichael Reese is the Favrot Professor in the Tulane School of Architecture, where she offers courses in architectural history and theory. Her books and articles focus on contemporary architecture and urban planning in the Americas. She has also served on the board of directors of Longue Vue since 2004.

His extremely varied career as a visionary garden artist, creator of spaces and atmospheres, painter, sculptor and landscape architect is far from ordinary.

If all the gardens of Michel Delvosalle have a strength and a particularism that make them unique, there is one hallmark: the search for harmony and the flexibility to adapt to places and people.

Features 20 gardens by contemporary Japanese garden design masters.

Introduction by lauded designer Chisao Shigemori, grandson of legendary garden master Mirei Shigemori.

A Japanese garden represents the essence of Japanese culture, embodying the country’s spirit and philosophy. It has a distinctive style, quality of materials and emphasis on details. Modern Japanese Gardens captures this spirit through the work of 20 contemporary Japanese garden design masters.

The gardens featured in Modern Japanese Gardens are drawn from a variety of locations in Japan, placed in different settings, from private houses and temples to cafés, restaurants and stores. Some are of traditional appearance; others have a distinctly modern aesthetic. In common, all the gardens have been influenced by Japanese culture and society, created by masters who are internationally recognised and lauded for their skills.

Modern Japanese Gardens includes insightful text on each garden, revealing the concept behind the design and the use of plants, alongside photography exploring both the detail and the overall aesthetic that shape the design.

Award-winning landscape architecture firm Nelson Byrd Woltz is celebrated for projects that, in addition to their sheer beauty, frequently trigger a cascade of positive ecological benefits: depleted landscapes brought back to life by reintroducing native plant species; the resurgence of local animals; and the restoration of damaged ecosystems made possible through unconventional, cross-disciplinary collaborations with scientists, sociologists, artists, biologists, and others who share their dedication to the stewardship of the land.
