'More is more'. That is the motto of paster decorator Pieter Porters. His interiors are rich, full and cosy; even a little decadent. Interiors in which people can really live. The luxurious finishing of Elegance & Decadance also reflects that grandness.

What is the use of a lovely house or interior if you dare not live in it? If you are frightened of making something dirty or damaging it? In our eyes, a house should be a warm nest, a place where after a busy day, you can relax, and where family and friends are welcome.

Whether we help build up a house from cellar to attic, or add atmosphere to an existing interior with a few well-chosen accessories, at House of Porters we want to create a timeless world, in which people will feel comfortable. We aim for warmth, light, homeliness, comfort. Cold interiors or harsh colours are not our things. That does not mean that we never take on design or modern interiors, but even then we strive for that timeless atmosphere, regardless of trends or fashion fads. Our interiors are meant to grow and develop with their occupants throughout their lives.

The interiors illustrated in this book show perfectly what the House of Porters stands for: sumptuous, homely, warm and elegant, with here and there a touch of decadence.

Pieter Porters is a decorator and flower binder. His timeless interiors can be admired in an astonishing house in the centre of Antwerp, where he also gives workshops and has a hotel. His previous book Senses of Living was an international bestseller.

Recently awarded the Venice Biennale 2008 ‘Silver Lion for Most Promising Young Architect’, Elemental is a Chilean initiative creating innovative solutions for subsidized housing. The program’s urban projects aim to improve social housing for poverty stricken families. Elemental organized an international architecture competition which resulted in seven constructed projects throughout Chile as hybrids between house and building, pushing the limits of expansion and density. Built in central areas, these houses are half-constructed, offering inhabitants the infrastructure to extend the house to personal needs. This is a fascinating study of the successes and failures of the ‘Elemental Houses’. ELEMENTAL is a Do Tank affiliated with the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile and COPEC, implementing urban projects for social interests.

Dutch designer Eric Kuster has become a hot celebrity by designing interiors for famous international restaurants, hotels and clubs, such as Jimmy Woo and Suzy Wong in Amsterdam, but also private (pent)houses from Russian businessmen and sheikhs to soccer players. He has his own interior business B.inc. Interior stuff and has showrooms in Kazachstan, Dubai, Moscow and New York. Dutch designer Eric Kuster's designs are all about luxury. Despite the economic crisis, Kuster always creates a world of glamour, luxury and beauty. In Kuster's long-awaited second book, "Eric Kuster: Metropolitan Luxury II", the reader is shown some of the most spectacular projects of this famous designer. From the Netherlands to Dubai, London and Moscow, the interiors of the rich and famous are photographed beautifully by top Australian photographer Paul Barbera. Not only his country of origin, but also Asia, the Middle East and Russia have embraced Eric Kuster's designs. ZwD Living has started in 1968. Its challenge is to associate design with wood scent, touch, sounds and temperature. It looks good and, being natural, it is a pleasure to touch. ZwD projects go beyond design, meant for visual and two-dimensional purposes, which is made to communicate image and not substance. They transmit that sense of protection found in the warmth of wood. Their shapes are not abstract because they need a connection with reality, with man and his culture: in this way, not only the designer but also people can actually experience the design.

The London architectural firm Wilkinson Eyre Architects, founded in 1983, has been drawing attention since the 1990s with its wealth of innovative and imaginative designs – notably its spectacular and structurally ambitious bridges. The best-known and most highly acclaimed are the Gateshead Millennium Bridge (2001) and the Floral Street Bridge (2003). The firm has won many prizes, including the RIBA Stirling Prize twice. It has also demonstrated the increasingly international scope of its activities by entering the competitions for the Guangzhou West Tower in China and the Tensegrity Bridge in Washington DC, USA.

This book offers detailed documentation of some 15 structures and projects, with special attention paid to the context of each design. The projects presented include the Stirling Prize-winning Magna Centre in Rotherham, UK; the National Waterfront Museum in Swansea, UK; the Guangzhou West Tower in China; and the Gatwick Airbridge, UK, among others.

The Taubman College of Architecture + Urban Planning at the University of Michigan offers three fellowships in the areas of architectural research and design instruction. The exemplary work of 57 of these fellows is the subject of this book, and honors the history of design excellence at the University.

The Muschenheim Fellowship offers design instructors early in their career the opportunity to develop a body of work in the context of teaching. Muschenheim fellows play a significant role in the definition of studio culture while pursuing their own creative endeavors. Proposals for the Muschenheim Fellowship focus upon the development of a specific centering upon a particular set of pedagogical themes to be engaged in the studio context.

The Oberdick Project Fellowship facilitates the development and realization of a significant exploration into some aspect of architectural speculation and production. Projects may range from the exploration of emergent building, fabrication, and environmental technologies to the realization of architectural works and endeavors typically unsupported within conventional models of practice.

The Sanders Fellowship supports individuals with significant, compelling and timely research dealing with architectural issues. Research can encompass architectural, urban, landscape, or cultural history or theory; architectural or environmental technology; or design studies.

A celebration of the enormously popular Italian painter, sculptor and interior decorator

Piero Fornasetti established an enduring reputation as a designer with a style that was all his own – a style based on illusionism, architectural perspectives and a host of personal leitmotifs, such as the sun, playing cards and fishes, from which he spun seemingly endless variations.
