Author Wendy Moonan, Foreword by Robert A.M. Stern
ID: 16421
Видавництво: Rizzoli

Design authority Wendy Moonan takes the reader on a tour of some of New York City's finest residential rooms -- past and present.

The selection of interiors is about the "wow" factor -- New York residential spaces that elicit gasps of pleasure and surprise when first seen. Some are very grand, others sparingly modern or eclectic. All are exceptional and, Moonan promises, unforgettable. Groundbreaking rooms include Brooke Astor's elegant library by Albert Hadley; Gloria Vanderbilt's sublime patchwork bedroom; Donald Judd's dramatically spare art-filled loft; Adolfo's opulent and magnificently red entrance hall; a Peter Marino-designed penthouse with sweeping midtown views; and Jamie Drake's stunning dining room for the mayor's residence, Gracie Mansion. Other illustrious interior designers and architects represented in the book include Mario Buatta, Robert Couturier, Albert Hadley, Denning & Fourcade, Mark Hampton, Philip Johnson, Charlotte Moss, Thomas O'Brien, Paul Rudolph, Bunny Williams, and Steven Gambrel.

New York is the epicenter of interior-design innovations. Residents embrace myriad styles -- from pure period historicism to bracing modernity. Moonan investigates the city's best residential spaces and presents them here, a book for the libraries of design lovers and professionals in the field.

Mark Foster Gage, Foreword by Peter Eisenman, Introduction by Robert A.M. Stern
ID: 16280
Видавництво: Rizzoli

Gage, Yale theorist, architect, and pioneer of the digital avant-garde in architecture and design, presents here a phantasmagoria of ideas and built work in his first monograph.

Architect to Lady Gaga and Nicola Formichetti, Mark Foster Gage has spent 20 years leading the digital architectural avant-garde, pushing the boundaries of what is possible in architecture and design and exploding expectations. This volume features built and unbuilt work from around the globe, from a penthouse in downtown Manhattan to retail stores in Hong Kong. The work shown goes beyond traditional architecture to the realm of fashion and fine art, and includes Gage’s celebrated Valentine’s Sculpture for Times Square, a 3-D-printed outfit for Lady Gaga, as well as designs for Google Glass, Solar Flowers, and robotic tulips.

Mark Foster Gage, whose work Harper’s Bazaar has called “effortlessly chic” and who has been labeled a “boundary breaker,” is a visionary for today. Filled with surprises and creations of wonder, such as a tower for New York’s 57th Street with mouthlike balconies on giant wings or a retail space bedecked with a hundred-faceted mirror, Gage’s work at once challenges expectations of what architecture might be and, as well, frequently fills one with a sense of excitement. Gage’s work is further elucidated in the book by the critical musings of eminent architects and cultural touchstones Peter Eisenman and Robert A.M. Stern.

About the Authors:

Mark Foster Gage is the principal of Mark Foster Gage Architects and the assistant dean of the Yale School of Architecture. Peter Eisenman is principal of Eisenman Architects. Robert A.M. Stern is founder and senior partner in the firm of Robert A.M. Stern Architects.

The house is the architect's favorite form: an opportunity to work collaboratively with clients on design that shapes and enhances life and gives pleasure over time. Here the "House Partners" at RAMSA, four distinguished architects, present 25 houses and apartments the firm has completed in the past ten years, each a unique design and collectively a stylistically diverse group reflecting deep knowledge of history and precedent.

Located in dramatic settings across North America -- from Napa and Sonoma to the Michigan lakefront to the spectacular coastline of the Hamptons and New England -- these remarkable houses reveal the architect's emphasis on the importance of context and his dedication to exploring the nature of space. Each house invokes the vernacular architectural heritage particular to its region while gracefully reflecting its unique natural surroundings. Whether they are shingle style "cottages" by the sea, colonial Georgian country estates, or elegant Regency designs, these houses are unique both for their timelessness and their ability to evoke a conversation with the past--a dialogue Stern and his partners believe lies at the heart of architecture. Also featured are apartments in the many residential towers the firm has designed in New York, Philadelphia, Toronto, and Los Angeles. Foremost among them, of course, is 15 Central Park West, acknowledged as the most successful condominium in New York. To give insight into the design process and client goals, each of the partners describes his own designs, focusing on the plannng and interior finishes. Stern is contributing an overview essay on the overall direction of the firm and linking the projects together.

About the Authors:

Randy M. Correll, a RAMSA partner since 2000, has designed elegant houses across the United States, from Martha's Vineyard and East Hampton to Aspen and Los Angeles, and in Canada and the Caribbean. He has received high praise for the adaptive reuse of nine vernacular farm buildings as the Town Hall of East Hampton.

Gary L. Brewer has been a RAMSA partner since 2008. His design portfolio includes both residential and institutional projects, most notably the new Nelson Fitness Center at Brown University. Brewer lectures regularly on the work of the firm and is a board member of the Institute of Classical Architecture and Art. Born in Australia,

Grant F. Marani came to New York to study architecture at Columbia University and joined RAMSA on graduation in 1984, becoming a partner in 2000. Marani is currently working on a number of residential developments in China. Over a thirty-five-year tenure at RAMSA, partner Roger H. Seifter has focused on residential design, with houses across the United States and Canada and in London and New Delhi. His work is widely published; most recently a penthouse at 15 Central Park West was featured on the cover of Architectural Digest.

At its best, the college campus is the representation of beliefs, of the specific character of a place, of a community, of an institution. It is the setting for the continually evolving interaction of people and ideas over time.
 -
Robert A. M. Stern

Ss an architect, educator, and architectural historian, Robert A. M. Stern brings special knowledge and expertise to issues of campus master planning and the design of academic buildings. This unique volume collects more than fifty projects by the firm for the most prestigious institutions in America - Harvard, Yale, Dartmouth, Georgetown, Stanford, University of Virginia - and focuses on the importance of the historic character of the place in charting the future.

In surveying the American campus, Stern begins with Thomas Jefferson’s Academical Village at the University of Virginia and then considers its many heirs. He organizes campuses into three principal paradigms: the Embedded Campus, those closely connected with the fabric of the cities and towns in which they sit; the Citadel Campus, those perched above and removed from the surroundings; and the Garden Campus, those whose buildings sit in a more casual configuration in the landscape.

Each campus is described in detail, with historic photographs and campus plans illustrating its development. Projects by Robert A. M. Stern Architects are placed in their context, providing a complete view of these distinguished places of learning.

Robert A. M. Stern is the founding partner of Robert A. M. Stern Architects and dean of the Yale School of Architecture. He is the author of the monumental five-volume history of New York’s architecture and urban development, culminating with New York 2000. Major current architectural projects include the new residential colleges at Yale University and the George W. Bush Presidential Center in Dallas.

History is the lens through which Robert A.M. Stern and his fifteen design partners envision an architecture for today. Robert A.M. Stern Architects: Buildings and Projects 2010–2014 is the seventh volume in a series that encompasses the breadth of the firm’s work since Stern’s earliest projects in the mid-1960s.

Emphasizing the output of the office over the past five years, this volume covers the most globalized period of practice so far. Featuring profiles of well over 100 designs built domestically and abroad, Robert A.M. Stern Architects: Buildings and Projects 2010–2014 includes significant projects in Asia, from China to India. In the United States, the firm’s educational, cultural, commercial, religious, and residential work continues to broaden its exploration of traditional and contemporary architectural expression.

This volume presents the firm’s continued influence on campuses across the United States, reflecting the position that education holds in its ethic, with new additions to Drexel University in Philadelphia, Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, and the University of Colorado Boulder. The office also remains key to the ongoing development of its home in New York City, with new residential towers on the High Line and in Greenwich Village.

In Designs for Living, Roger H. Seifter, Randy M. Correll, Grant F. Marani, and Gary L. Brewer, who lead the residential practice at Robert A.M. Stern Architects, present fifteen houses the firm has completed over the past ten years. From contemporary interpretations of the shingle style to robust Mediterranean designs, the houses are stylistically diverse reflecting RAMSA’s deep knowledge of history and precedent. Each partner provides insight into the design process and his individual approach to working with clients.

Houses are located in dramatic settings from Napa and Sonoma to the spectacular coastline of the Hamptons and New England. Whether overlooking the ocean or nestled into the mountainside, these remarkable houses reveal the architects’ emphasis on the importance of context and their dedication to exploring the nature of place and environment. Each house invokes the vernacular architectural heritage particular to its region while gracefully reflecting its natural surroundings.

Connecting contemporary lifestyles to traditional American aesthetics, these residences are exceptional both for their timelessness and their ability to evoke a conversation with the past — a dialogue the RAMSA partners believe lies at the heart of architecture.

"While many architecture firms curtail the residential side of their practices to take on more commercial and institutional commissions, AD100 stalwart Robert A.M. Stern Architects (RAMSA) has maintained an enduring commitment to houses. From a Malibu compound modeled on a Mediterranean hill town to a Shingle Style manse in the Hamptons, their work displays not only a mastery of historical styles but also real dexterity in marshaling traditional idioms to the beat of the contemporary world."
— Architectural Digest

"The volume tours readers through fifteen houses completed by the RAMSA partners over the last decade. Stylistically diverse, historically informed, contextually appropriate, and functionally up to the moment, each offers its own lesson in timelessness." —New York Spaces

"Most people will never own home by Robert A.M. Stern. Most people will never even see a home by Stern, the dean of the Yale School of Architecture and a favorite architect of the tasteful privileged. His houses, all of them extravagantly detailed and rooted in the architecture of centuries past, are hidden behind high hedged or at the ends of long driveways in places like Montecito, East Hampton, Martha's Vineyard and Kiawah Island. But now there is a bit of democratization going on, at least in how Stern's houses are presented." — 1st Dibs Introspective

Robert A. M. Stern Architects, over its forty-year history and across a wide range of building types, has defined principles common to all projects. Stern articulates the ideas that govern his design process through this rich visual presentation of all types of his work: museums and cultural institutions, colleges and universities, commercial and residential developers, and, famously, private residential clients throughout the United States and Europe.

Evidence serves as a visual synthesis of Stern's methodologies, revealing the firm's vision through juxtapositions of building, material and landscape: "We never think of just the building. We like to think of the next bigger thing—what other buildings will come next to it, but also the siting and landscaping. Abstract compositional principles do interest me but not when I begin a design. I begin with a cultural assessment of the building as a type, the place it is set in, and lastly its obligations to its particular moment in time."

Through 400 illustrations, Stern illuminates key architectural concepts by examining components: stunning windows harmonizing with their views, elegant entryways, meticulous stonework, homes conversing with their settings. On each page, Stern pairs images that challenge the idea that tradition means statis. Rather, tradition can be interpreted to suit all situations in an increasingly complex world.

Designs for Living: The Houses of Robert A. M. Stern Architects

Written by Robert A.M. Stern, Peter Morris Dixon, Paul Goldberger

Видавництво: Monacelli Press

I think that all architecture comes from what went before. And how carefully one hews to precedent or how many liberties one takes, in my view, is part of a larger set of judgments as to what is, or could be called, “appropriate.” Appropriate from every point of view, especially from the site, the cultural expectations of a community and of the specific client. — Robert A. M. Stern

Central to the work of Robert A. M. Stern is a commitment to an architecture that reinterprets the past to serve contemporary life. This monograph, the fifth volume since Stern opened his practice in 1969, explores the application of this principle to a wide range of building types, including libraries, university buildings, cultural centers, offices, towers, and private residences.

Focused on the years 2004 through 2009, an exceptionally productive period for Stern’s firm, this volume includes designs for the Miami Beach, Jacksonville, and Clearwater Public Libraries in Florida, the vast Zubiarte retail complex in Bilbao, Spain, two new residential colleges at Yale University, the widely acclaimed 15 Central Park West condominium in New York, Comcast, a crystalline addition to the Philadelphia skyline, and the George W. Bush Presidential Center in Dallas, Texas.

In a conversation with renowned architecture critic Paul Goldberger, Stern discusses the principles that have guided the firm since its inception, focusing on the collaborative nature of the work and the importance of precedent and context. He also describes his own role as an educator, as dean of the architecture school at Yale University, and his deep interest in the history of architecture, first awakened during his student days at Yale.

Central to the work of Robert A. M. Stern is a commitment to architecture that reinterprets the past to serve contemporary life. Buildings and Towns explores the application of that principle to a wide range of building types, including libraries, university buildings, cultural centers, offices, health care facilities, courthouses, and recreational complexes completed throughout the world over the past twenty years. The sequel to the highly successful Robert A. M. Stern: Buildings (1996), this volume also incorporates master plans for towns and campuses.

Among the sixty-five featured projects are the Miami Beach Public Library, the new campus for the Darden School of Business at the University of Virginia, multiple projects for Disney including the Ambassador Hotel in Japan, and a range of apartment towers culminating with 15 Central Park West, the largest residential structure in New York City, opening in fall 2007.

Robert A. M. Stern is dedicated to the synthesis of tradition and innovation. In more than thirty-five years of practice, he has produced a wide range of building types with a variety of stylistic influences, all inspired by the great legacy of American architecture. His firm, Robert A. M. Stern Architects, was first recognized for its distinguished houses, and residential design remains the cornerstone of the practice. This beautifully illustrated monograph - a companion to the best-selling Robert A. M. Stern: Houses - presents twenty-six of the firm's most memorable houses.

Located in diverse settings across North America - from a valley in Colorado with sweeping views of the Aspen mountains to a bluff overlooking Long Island Sound to an island off the coast of British Columbia - these remarkable houses reveal the architect's emphasis on the importance of context and his dedication to exploring the nature of space. Each house invokes the vernacular architectural heritage particular to its region while gracefully reflecting its unique natural surroundings. Whether they are Shingle Style "cottages" by the sea, colonial Georgian country estates, or elegant Regency designs, Stern's houses are unique both for their timelessness and their ability to evoke a conversation with the past - a dialogue he believes lies at the heart of architecture.
