Central to the work of Robert A. M. Stern is a commitment to architecture that reinterprets the past to serve contemporary life. About the Authors:

Rose Tarlow is an internationally acclaimed interior designer, antiquarian, designer of fine furniture and fabrics, and author. Her life and work have been featured in nearly every important publication on architecture, interior design, and style. A member of the Interior Design Hall of Fame since 1995, she was named to Elle Décor’s A‑List as a Grand Master of Design in 2010, and became a charter member of the AD100 Hall of Fame in 2018. Her company, Rose Tarlow Melrose House, has locations in Los Angeles and New York, with her furniture and fabrics featured in 11 additional showrooms across the country and international outlets in London, Melbourne, and Sydney.

Miguel Flores-Vianna, François Halard, and Fernando Montiel Klint are renowned interiors photographers whose work can be seen in magazines worldwide.

Since founding RoTo Architecture in 1991, Michael Rotondi and Clark Stevens have demonstrated that the applications of vibrant avant-garde style can be both wide-ranging and successful.

The presumptive post-Frank Gehry flag bearer of L.A. modernism, Roto has earned international recognition for its expertise in community planning in rural areas, city parks, and on campuses. Featuring essays by architecture critic Mildred Friedman and design theorist Michael Benedikt, RoTo Architecture illustrates the breadth and depth of the firm's commissions, including a memorial for the L.A. Roy Lichtenstein in His Studio is a portfolio of vivid and engaging photographs by Laurie Lambrecht, who was an administrative assistant to Lichtenstein for three years. She and the artist worked together daily, and the bond between them is evident in the photographs. Lichtenstein is shown working on two major series, Reflections and The Interiors. He is completely absorbed, oblivious to the camera, as he mounts ladders, assembles colors, composes, and steps back to consider the effect.

During this period Lambrecht assisted in gathering material for a major retrospective at the Guggenheim Museum in New York. As a result, the photographs include scrapbooks and sketchbooks and other archival material that document Lichtenstein’s entire career. There are stencils of Ben-Day dots, clippings from newspapers and comic books, Polaroid snapshots, rolls of tape, and boxes of colored pencils.

Lichtenstein encouraged Lambrecht to make photographs and was often pleased and amused by the results. These images offer fascinating insight into Lichtenstein’s working processes and source materials, as well as being vibrant works of art in their own right.

In her essay Dorothy Lichtenstein, wife of the artist, recalls the collegial atmosphere of the studios in New York and Southampton in the early 1990s, a time of extraordinary productivity. Edward Robinson, an associate curator at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, describes Lambrecht’s process and approach.

The most comprehensive and authoritative monograph to be published about the prolific master of art deco interior design. Jacques-Emile Ruhlmann (1879–1933) was one of the most celebrated art deco interior and furniture designers. A tastemaker and a style setter, he worked and associated with the best artists in the worlds of fashion, architecture, and the decorative arts, and catered to an international clientele of diplomats, wealthy businessmen, and artistocrats. Known as "The Master of Art Deco," Ruhlmann created opulent, exquisitely designed furniture, homes, and showrooms for the Parisian beau monde in the ’20s and ’30s, and was known for his use of rare woods with exquisite ornamentation provided by ivory, tortoiseshell, lacquer, mirrors, silk, and tooled metals. In addition to his interiors, Ruhlmann also designed lamps, rugs, wall coverings, cigar boxes, and unusually shaped beds and divans. Today, his objects are highly sought by collectors and connoisseurs. Encompassing examples from all areas of Ruhlmann’s output, this book expands upon the author’s previous work, originally published in 1984, and contains much new information, sketches, and drawings, and additional archival material never previously seen. This volume is the product of more than twenty years of research, and the author worked closely with the Ruhlmann family, art dealers, collectors, and curators in preparing this truly comprehensive and exhaustive monograph.

About the Author:

Florence Camard is the world’s foremost authority on the work of Jacques-Emile Ruhlmann and helped curate the recent 2004 Ruhlmann exhibitions at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts. She teaches at the Centre for the Study of the Art Object in Paris.

Eero Saarinen (1910-1961) was one of the 20th century's great visionaries, both in the fields of furniture design (he created the ubiquitous Knoll "Tulip" chairs and tables, for example) and in architecture. Among his greatest accomplishments are monuments that shaped architecture in postwar America and became icons in themselves: Washington D.C.'s Dulles International Airport, the very sculptural and fluid TWA terminal at JFK Airport in New York, and the 630 ft (192m) high Gateway Arch of St. Louis, Missouri. Marrying curves and dynamic forms with a Modernist aesthetic, he brought a whole new dimension to architecture.

Sanaa’s housing projects, both finished (House A, S House, House in a Plum Grove, Small House and Moriyama House), and unfinished projects (Flower House, Garden & House, Seijo Apartments, Ichikawa Apartments, House in China and Eda Apartments). SANAA's architecture embraces complexities within deceptively simple appearances. It has many elements that are impossible to understand unless actually “experienced”. In contrast with modern architecture, SANAA has many aspects that cannot be revealed in “representative” media such as plans, models, and photographs. The “representations” of their architectural works incorporate ambiguity and chronological elements. This characteristic makes Sanaa one of the most innovative offices in the current architectural panorama.

For their intervention, Sanaa decided to use acrylic to make transparent curtains. They imagined an installation design that left the existing space of Barcelona Pavilion undisturbed.

The acrylic curtains are standing freely on the floor and shaped in a calm spiral. The curtain softly encompasses the space within the pavilion and creates a new atmosphere. The view through the acrylic will be something different from the original with soft reflections slightly distorting the pavilion.

Feats of design and engineering.

Santiago Calatrava is not only one of the world’s most prominent architects but is also an engineer, sculptor, and painter. His reputation as an unparalleled architectural engineer was cemented with his numerous bridges for cities around the world. With recent projects such as the stadium for the 2004 Athens Olympic Games and the new railway station in Liège, Belgium, he has unarguably made his name in Europe and continues to look further ahead.
