The author:

Philip Jodidio studied art history and economics at Harvard, and edited Connaissance des Arts for over 20 years. His books include TASCHEN's Architecture Now! series, and monographs on Tadao Ando, Norman Foster, Richard Meier, Jean Nouvel, and Zaha Hadid. He is internationally renowned as one of the most popular writers on the subject of architecture.

Public Architecture: The Art Inside spans the 30 year history of Denver, Colorado-based Fentress Architects, an international design firm that passionately pursues the creation of sustainable and iconic public architecture. This monograph examines the creative working process, tracing artistic influences and references fashion, poetry, music, dance and related disciplines. Fentress is internationally known for an innovative, award-winning design portfolio of international airports, national museums, world-class convention centers, courthouses and government buildings, high-rise office and mixed use towers, laboratories, higher education facilities, and luxury multi-family residences.

About the Authors:

Curtis Fentress was born in North Carolina, and graduated with honors from North Carolina State University with a Bachelor of Architecture degree. After leaving a position with I.M. Pei, Fentress joined the newly formed firm Kohn Pedersen Fox to continue his pursuit of large-scale public projects while striving to bring humanism to civic buildings. In the late 1970s, KPF sent him to Denver as project designer for a 36-story tower in Denver. In 1980, Building Design and Construction magazine named Fentress “Young Professional of the Year.” Also that year, Fentress founded his own firm and later was awarded the opportunity to design Denver International Airport, which propelled him into the international realm. DIA, Incheon International Airport and numerous museums, convention centers and other civic buildings have earned Fentress Architects more than 300 awards for innovation and design excellence. Curtis Fentress, FAIA, RIBA, is the 2010 winner of the American Institute of Architects’ Thomas Jefferson Award, the highest honor in public architecture worldwide.

Mary Voelz Chandler has pursued a long career writing for newspapers, magazines and books. She worked as an editor at The Miami Herald, covered the Rocky Mountain West for People magazine, and for more than 20 years was art and architecture critic for the Rocky Mountain News in Denver. Her interest in the relationship of art, architecture, preservation and people inspired coverage that has won numerous awards for reporting and criticism. A native of St. Louis, Mo., Chandler is a graduate of the journalism school at the University of Missouri.

What makes a good schoolhouse? Beyond the basics of classrooms and library, a good school inspires students and teachers and enhances the learning environment through its architecture and its art. Nowhere is this principle better demonstrated than in the New York City school system, the largest in the United States, where a collection of more than 1,500 artworks has been assembled over nearly 150 years. Research building is a very comprehensive architectural structure, and it must meet requirements on aspects of functional area, technical equipment, economic cost and law. They represent innovative means of production - that is why the design of research building is always changing.

According to the changes in the field of scientific research, the challenges faced by research architecture are how to make the high-tech equipments merged into the environment with better communication and how to integrate the institution itself into the atmosphere of communication and interaction through design. The former strictly functional organization is bound to be replaced by the beneficial communication cycle.

This book presents us that technical improvements are not necessarily the key to the design of great research buildings. The best research buildings position the researchers as the most creative agents in the process of scientific experiments. Since streets become increasingly crowded, living on the top of a building promises privacy and distance. Rooftops have become the symbol of a new lifestyle - an extension and exclusive enjoyment of an area traditionally unused: the architectural crown of a building has been transformed into a new area for work or living. Architects, designers and town planners have seen in this final section of a building their last chance to let their fantasies run free and to dramatically shape the cities' skylines with extensions, attics and unique tops. The building of religious structures represents a rare opportunity for the architect to concentrate on the creation of volume, space, and form. Sacred architecture is far less determined than other building tasks by functional requirements, norms, and standards. As a rule, it is free to unfold as pure architecture.

Thus in design terms this building task offers enormous freedoms to the architect. At the same time, however, the special atmospherics of sacred spaces call, on the part of the architect, for a highly sensitive treatment of religion and the relevant cultural and architectural traditions.

In a systematic section, this volume introduces the design, technical, and planning fundamentals of building churches, synagogues, and mosques. Malalysian-born Soo Chan (Chan Soo Khian) is among the new breed of Southeast Asian architects whose architecture is not only modern and refreshing, but also reflects the spirit of Asia. Having studied and trained in the US, Soo Chan returned to Asia in the 1990s to establish his own multi-disciplinary architectural practice, Soo Chan Design Associates (SCDA) in Singapore. Since then, his reputation and office have grown and he now undertakes commissions worldwide. Soo Chan is blessed with the ability to conceive masterful architecture with apparent ease. His work often combines references to traditional Asian architecture, while simultaneously striving to refine a modern architectural style of its own. This book brings to light many of his latest, exciting projects with captivating photographs, and authoritative text by well-known writer and critic Robert Powell.
