As a carrier of human cultural information, the museum is a global cultural facility, which evolves into new functions and forms during the endless social development and gradually develops into a multi-functional cultural complex. The age of traditional collecting and exhibiting functions has passed by; the contemporary museum architecture needs to meet more requirements.

The book selects excellent competition entries and design proposals for art museums, science museums, history museums and local complex museums all over the world since 2007. To some extent, it is from museums that we learn about the past and present of a city. A museum is a materialised history; there, with the historical relics on display, we have dialogues with history. As we have realised that a museum would be a useful tool for the publicity of a city, museums have become projects that architects and designers most long for. In the book we selected 50 world-top museums, including history museums, art museums, science museums, etc. Each project is illustrated with pictures, plans and a brief introduction. While appreciating the museums, readers would learn more about the distinguished concepts and the distinct features of them.

In this book, the world’s most exciting new museums are shown to be as inspiring as the works they display.

The twenty-first century has seen a boom in museum construction, both in new buildings and renovations or additions to existing ones. Nearly thirty museums are given close inspection in this generously illustrated volume. Each entry includes a discussion of the building’s cultural and geographic environment, complemented by color photographs, sketches and architectural plans. The book encompasses four continents and highlights the designs of Frank Gehry, Renzo Piano, Steven Holl, Zaha Hadid, Mario Botta, David Chipperfield, Tadao Ando, Yoshio Taniguchi and Daniel Libeskind. In addition, the authors provide thoughtful commentary on the relationship between architecture and the fine arts and an assessment of museum functionality in modern times.

Much of modern architecture has been conceived using glass to create minimal structures, to extol the notion of lightweight construction solutions and to allow maximum daylight into buildings. However, it is only in the last 15 years that the full potential of glass architecture has been realised. Brent Richards demonstrates that a new aesthetic in glass architecture has arrived, one that emphasizes opacity, depth, discovery, mystery and shadow and uses glass to generate a multi-sensory experience. The book begins with an introduction that traces the history of the key moments of glass in architecture and describes developments in glass technology over the last 20 years. It goes on to feature 25 recent examples of glass architecture, with specially commissioned colour photographs by the renowned architectural photographer Dennis Gilbert. It includes the work of such well known names as Steven Holl, Toyo Ito and Herzog & de Meuron.

Presented in this publication is a compilation of recent work, by a diverse selection of prestigious architects, on hospitals, health centres and other buildings of medical utility. Projects have been selected for the new interpretations, fresh points of view and innovation that have gone into their design. The book is lavishly illustrated with vivid photographs and architectural drawings, as well as information - from conception to completion - on the materials and construction processes necessary to execute the designs. Furthermore, the fine architects concerned have contributed their own explanatory texts, comments and anecdotes. Carles Broto, an architecture scholar and one of the founders of the IAC (institute for alternative culture). Following a successful period at the Atrium Group (Barcelona), he has now joined Grupo Links - Structure as the publishing director of various contemporary architecture collections. He is currently investigating the evolution of new American housing, as part of a multi-country project. He lives in Barcelona.

Off the Grid confronts the ecological and cultural problems associated with the way we get and use energy, and explains how it is possible to live in a beautifully designed home using much less--no matter where your home is located. Our homes are connected by a nearly invisible grid of infrastructure that binds us together.
