Payette Associates' philosophy is centered on planning and designing spaces and enduring buildings for people. As evidenced in this book, the firm creates spaces in which to conduct research and teaching for science, technology, medicine and health; places for campus and cultural life; and places for healthcare. These facilities are designed to promote human interaction, facilitate the exchange of ideas and provide physical comfort. The firm's clients include colleges and universities, medical and health schools, hospitals, corporations, and cultural institutions. Payette Associates' history extends back to 1932, when architect Paul Nocka and Frederick Markus, an engineer and industrial designer, worked together on the landmark New York Hospital.

Even in this age of varied home entertainment and fast-paced mass media, immense creative energy is being directed towards new space for live performance. Profusely illustrated with photographs, computer renderings and architectural drawings, Performing Architecture explores fifty of today’s finest performance spaces, as well as recently refurbished, restored and transformed buildings. A brief introduction traces the post-war development of theatre and concert hall design, and sets out the circumstances today that have led to such a rich provision for performance. Buildings featured range from Frank Gehry’s landmark Disney Opera House in Los Angeles to the quieter Unicorn Theatre for Children in London; and from the Tenerife Opera House by Santiago Calatrava to the Guangzhou Opera House, China, by Zaha Hadid. A celebratory study, this book showcases some of the most exhilarating buildings of our time.

• The only book to bring together the world's finest twenty-first-century buildings for live performance
• Individual entries on fifty opera houses, theatres, concert halls and dance spaces in the US, Europe, Asia and Australasia
• Will appeal to architects, architectural students, engineers and anyone interested in architecture and the performing arts

Larry Perkins describes the firm's philosophy: 'While we enjoy recognition, the applause we seek is the quiet trust and satisfaction of clients and public who know that their interests have been thoughtfully served.' From its early beginnings more than 65 years ago, Perkins & Will has evolved into a firm characterised by its ability to transform commonplace building programs into uncommon designs and to work with clients in very successful ways. Perkins & Will's portfolio of buildings is vast in quantity as well as scope, and includes schools, hospitals, colleges and university facilities, laboratories, museums and corporate headquarters. Many of these are located around the world.

Success at Perkins+Will is measured by how imaginatively a client’s vision is translated into a finished product. The firm designs and strategizes with a philosophy that places people at the center of their work; collaboration is what propels their design process forward. This approach is a Perkins+Will legacy, dating back to one of the firm’s first and most prestigious projects, the 1930s Crow Island School, designed with the insight founder Larry Perkins gained from attending school with the children. This monograph explores the firm’s work through its rich history, examining a variety of completed and conceptually designed projects that promote the firm’s philosophy of ideas and buildings that honor the broader goals of society.

Since the earliest people lived as nomads, their buildings were portable, constructed in a way that allowed them to be rebuilt as they moved to new locations for better living conditions as the seasons changed.

This book discusses the forerunners, present context, and technology of portable architecture. It documents numerous international examples, organized by areas of application, and offers a broad array of suggestions for practical design.

In the Arts and Culture section, Shigeru Ban’s Nomadic Museum, made of shipping containers in the USA and Japan is examined, as is Mark Fisher’s event architecture for concert tours by the Rolling Stones and U2. Suggestions for flexible living include Richard Horden’s micro compact home and the Container Home Kit from LOT/EK.

The design of mobile structures used in extreme situations, such as the Antarctic or in the aftermath of natural catastrophes, is explored. Exhibition and entertainment facilities are other typical areas of application for light, mobile structures.

Demountable, temporary structures allow for exciting architectural experimentation which can then be prototyped for regular use.

Founded in 1999 by Joe Powers and Jeffery Brown, Powers Brown Architecture is still a relatively young firm. Still, it has achieved notoriety with an impressive aray of awards for architecture, urban design and interior design.

This book examines the firm's quest to explore the separation of form and image by exploiting the forces that produce the status quo. With each project, the firm strives to comment on, heighten reaction to, and question the perceived cultural landscape.

Among the featured projects are the METRO Light Rail Facility in Houston, the Resident Agents office building for the FBI and McAllen and the RTRON Corporate Headquarters in Stafford, all recently completed in Texas. Introduction by Michael Rotondi.

Contemporary goes Mainstream

We tend to divide buildings into two basic categories - private structures such as houses, and public buildings like railway stations, concert halls or museums. Public buildings have limits of their own: whether a courthouse or an airport, a stadium or college campus, questions of style, function or cost are clearly posed. Resolving such tensions is just one of many serious questions that arise when the definition of public architecture is at stake. This book explores the most creative responses to these and related issues, and shows how in recent years, public architecture has undergone a tremendous upheaval, an aesthetic awakening of sorts.

Where solidly classical and staid designs were the norm, aesthetic daring and innovation are now increasingly rewarded, as celebrated architects from Herzog & de Meuron to Jean Nouvel have blazed a trail for a new generation of truly public buildings - structures that combine access for the many, with quality once reserved for the few. Public Architecture Now! highlights the groundbreaking and breathtaking new public architecture now appearing around the world, from Spain to Norway, via Chile, China and the USA.
