Brick by Brick. The world’s most innovative brick buildings

Of all building materials in the world, brick is one of the most enduring and ubiquitous. Traces of brickmaking date back to 7500 BC and fired brick first made its appearance in about 3500 BC. Since then, the trusty brick has shown amazing resilience and remains one of the mainstays of contemporary architecture. Rooted in tradition in countries as different as China and the Netherlands, it is inexpensive, flexible in use, and can also be ecologically fabricated.

This comprehensive two-volume set tours the world to cover the most exciting and innovative brick buildings of the past 15 years, from Argentina to New Zealand. True to all TASCHEN architecture tomes, it includes new talents like Argentina’s Diego Arraigada and Vietnam’s Nguyen Hai Long as well as established starchitects such as Tadao Ando and Peter Zumthor. Featured buildings showcase the variety of brick applications across cultural, domestic, infrastructure, and leisure spaces, including Tate Modern Switch House by Herzog & De Meuron, Tidy Architects’ Amorio Restaurant in Santiago, and Mass Design Group’s Maternity Waiting Village in Kasungu, Malawi.

The editor and author

Philip Jodidio studied art history and economics at Harvard, and edited Connaissance des Arts for over 20 years. His TASCHEN books include the Architecture Now! series and monographs on Tadao Ando, Norman Foster, Renzo Piano, Jean Nouvel, Shigeru Ban, Oscar Niemeyer, and Zaha Hadid.

Functionally and esthetically compelling solutions for library building and spaces today that work for all users.

Libraries are spaces for learning, discovery, and also for interaction. Their architecture is currently the subject of much discussion, as the demands on these cornerstones of modern civilization have changed enormously since they have had to meet the requirements of the new multimedia and digital age. The library as an institution underwent a real image change from an introverted knowledge repository to a globally networked information provider and communication mediator.
The architectural expression of this expanded and constantly evolving profile of requirements makes library construction extremely multi-layered and complex. But this is also precisely the source of enormous potential for bold designs and ingenious aesthetic concepts. Whether involving new buildings, conversions or extensions, this volume shows the diversity of this building task with its interplay of state-of-the-art technology and cultural demands.

About the Author:

The core topic for Chris van Uffelen is the transfer of knowledge about design in all its manifestations. For more than twenty years the Dutch-German art historian has been publishing books as well as countless essays and articels on art, architecture, interior design and urban planning from antiquity to the present.

Beautifully illustrated with colour photographs throughout, this joyous exploration of the history of Western civilization showcases the cathedral’s central role in the European imagination. Centerbrook was conceived in 1975 as a community of architects working together to advance American place-making and the craft of building. Recipients of the AIA Firm Award, they are entering their fifth decade of designing buildings across the country. This stunning new monograph, edited by John Dixon, FAIA, illustrates in full-colour the wide range of projects completed throughout the last decade. In typical fashion of their sophisticated style and exercise in clarity, the in-depth texts and richly illustrated images communicate an indomitable focus on the architectural context of their ideas that are accessible to all. There is visual poetry in the work to be sure, but the book provides critical, concise and insightful descriptions of where the design ideas germinate. The reader will be engaged and informed by the way the shapes, materials, and details of these buildings are configured, and have a clear understanding of the works. The book’s title, Centerbrook 4, represents their fourth book on architecture, four decades of practice, and the four current partners – Jeff Riley, Chad Floyd, Mark Simon, Jim Childress – who are each recognised as AIA Fellows, in design. This wonderful new volume also showcases a range of projects currently in development by the firm’s next generation of designers.

- Showcases key projects from the four current partners - Jeff Riley, Chad Floyd, Mark Simon and Jim Childress - as well as works from other principal architects at Centerbrook
- Insightful text introductions by John Dixon
- Features innovative and award-winning projects from across North America, including residential homes, community villages, hotels, schools and universities, museums, corporate centres and laboratories, and sporting centres
- Very thorough full-colour imagery has been coupled with highly descriptive text, resulting in a rich resource for architects, designers, instructors and students

About the Author:

Founded in 1975, Centerbrook's work has received more than 350 awards for design excellent, and spans from planning and architecture to details that make buildings memorable. The firm's nineteenth-century compound of mill buildings on the Falls River in Centerbrook, Connecticut, is both the firm's home and its vital centre of experimentation where design in enriched by many streams of influence. A collaborative firm with an exceptional history of building, Centerbrook performs many other services such as project management, planning, interior design, furniture and lighting design, sculpture, landscape and site design, industrial design and graphic design. All are done from Centerbrook's historic compound. An architecture graduate of MIT, John Morris Dixon, FAIA, left the drafting board in 1960 for architectural journalism, eventually becoming editor-in-chief of Progressive Architecture (P/A) from 1972 to 1996. He has chaired the AIA's national Committee on Design, on which he remains active, and is involved in preservation of modern architecture as a board member of Docomomo New York/Tri-State. He continues to write and edit for a variety of publications, in print and online.

The design of open spaces around or within the premises of companies is an increasingly important focus area of landscape architecture. Their conceptual design depends on whether the company garden is open to the public or rather dedicated to employees only.

On the one hand, these projects are representative of the respective firm and constitute part of the corporate identity. On the other hand, in times of the increased awareness of work-life balance, flexible working and communication structures, as well as global networking, they are an integral part of innovative workplace concepts. This volume reveals the remarkable diversity of design possibilities for company gardens from around the world.

A comprehensive guide to container architecture with examples, historical context and practical how-to advice.

This book presents a wide range of projects in container architecture – a contemporary architectural phenomenon. It features container structures used as pop-up stores and temporary exhibits as well as sophisticated housing and office spaces that provoke and inspire while setting new standards in functionality and aesthetics. But the book is not only visually inspiring. Because it documents plans, describes associated costs and suggests concrete solutions for common problems, it is a practical reference for architects, planners, and cultural activists as well as event and marketing managers, to guide them in deciding what types of containers are best suited to their upcoming projects.

Shipping containers are modular, affordable, and virtually indestructible. More and more often they are being used to build temporary structures such as pavilions, offices, galleries, and bars that can be easily moved if necessary. This phenomenon has a name: container architecture.

Container Atlas presents a wide range of contemporary projects along with an in-depth investigation into the background and evolution of this topical field. The book illustrates how containers are being used as building blocks to accommodate the daily lives and special events of urban nomads. Because the structures that containers are used to build are not meant to be permanent, their architecture has a more short-term and playful character that often references current trends. Container Atlas features advertising, pop-up stores, and temporary exhibits that are built using this approach as well as sophisticated housing and office spaces. Found in both urban and rural settings, these container structures provoke and inspire while setting new standards in functionality and aesthetics.

With years of theoretical and practical experience in the fields of container architecture and modular building, architect and professor Han Slawik and his team have established themselves as international experts in these fields.

____________

Container Atlas seeks out luxurious remote hideaways, urban dwellings, community centers, and more, all showing how the humble container can put the fab into pre-fab.

Container architecture has become an essential part of our twenty-first-century surroundings, with it being used to create modular structures for pavilions, brand showrooms, retail premises, and even residential homes. Ten years after the first publication of Container Atlas, this eagerly anticipated follow-up charts how this movement has evolved into an essential part of today’s architectural vocabulary. Container Atlas serves as a practical and inspirational reference not only for architects and engineers but also for all creatives eager to learn about the rich and diverse language of container architecture and modular building.

About the Authors:

Architect and Professor Han Slawik and his team have established themselves as international experts in the field of container architecture. He is the author of the first edition of Container Atlas and has returned to the subject with refreshed insights into this burgeoning movement.

Over 3,000 churches were built in Poland between 1945 and 1989, despite the socialist state’s hostility towards religion. We call this Day-VII Architecture.

Built by parishioners from scavenged or pinched materials, the churches were at once an expression of faith and a form of anti-government protest. Their fantastic designs broke with the state’s rigid urbanism. Neither legal nor prohibited, the construction of churches during this period engaged the most talented architects and craftspeople, who in turn enabled parish communities to build their own houses of worship. These community projects eventually became crucial sites for the democratization of Poland.

Unearthing the history of these churches through photography and interviews with their designers, this publication sheds new light on the architectural dimension of Poland’s transformation from state socialism to capitalism.

_________

An exclusive tour through the breathtaking and inspirational interiors of Manhattan’s houses of worship

For the past 15 years, Michael L. Horowitz has been photographing the interiors of Manhattan’s historic churches and synagogues. Though their exteriors are often unassuming and overlooked by passers-by, their interiors are spectacular, uplifting worshippers and architectural devotees alike.

In this book, Horowitz takes us from Lower to Upper Manhattan, from the colorful wall paintings of Bialystocker Synagogue, to the jewel-like stained glass windows of Saint Patrick’s Cathedral, to the awe-inspiring wooden ceiling of the Holy Name of Jesus and Saint Gregory the Great Parish. A lively and informative text by Elizabeth Anne Hartman tells the stories behind each of the seventy-five houses of worship featured. These sacred edifices reflect the hopes and aspirations of the many different communities that helped build the metropolis, expressed in numerous architectural and artistic styles. And many of these interiors bear the imprint of notable personalities in Big Apple history, from Clement Moore of “The Night before Christmas” to pioneering Black philanthropist Pierre Toussaint.

This handsome volume, nourishing to the eyes and soul, offers a new perspective on the city to New York residents and visitors alike.

Publisher's note: In the first printing of Divine New York, the photograph on page 125 left is misidentified. It depicts the interior of St. Thomas More (65 East 89th Street), not Saint Thomas Church (1 West 53rd Street).

Craig R. Whitney is a former assistant manager of the New York Times and the author of All the Stops: The Glorious Pipe Organ and Its American Masters.

Elizabeth Anne Hartman worked for many years as a publishing executive and now runs the arts consultancy Hartman on Hudson. She writes for publications including the Wall Street Journal and Publishers Weekly.

A spectacular global survey of the new buildings merging architecture and nature to transform our cities for a sustainable future.

Concrete horizons, urban sprawl, high-density living: never have our cities and their buildings been in greater need of greening. Yet what’s required is more than an occasional vertical garden or living roof. Featuring seventy projects from around the world – some built, some ongoing, some from the future – Garden City looks at the increasingly inventive ways in which architects and designers are incorporating nature into the built environment, transforming the city for the benefit of all.

From office buildings that incorporate urban farms and exchange the CO2 produced by humans for food and oxygen produced by plants, to lightweight systems for growing gardens on vertical surfaces; from ‘tree houses’ the size of city blocks to civic buildings that are ‘plugged into’ existing water-management systems – there are rich and often unexpected ideas for every inquiring designer.

The future of our urban architecture is biologically alert, naturally self-sustaining and alive. Garden City is this future’s first manifesto.

A place that symbolizes freedom, traveling and the wind of change: It’s a Gas! is going in search of the most unique gas stations around the world

The first gasoline was sold in pharmacies — but this was to change in the 1950s. As the car experienced its great rise in popularity, gas stations began to pop up like mushrooms out of the ground. Futuristic and progressive, these modern temples of mobility became roadside reference points for young people hungry for independence, and to everyone who strove for a sense of freedom.

It’s a Gas! explores the surprisingly diverse world of the gas station — a functional high tech temple, a transit zone, a film set, a converted residence, or an abandoned ruin hidden in a backyard. The world of pumps is full of surprises, ready to be discovered in this book.

The preface was written by US-American talkshow legend and passionate car collector Jay Leno.

Co-editor Sascha Friesike is an Assistant Professor of Digital Innovation at VU University in Amsterdam, and associated researcher at Alexander von Humboldt Institute for Internet and Society Berlin, and passionate photographer of gas stations.

Their function as a link between two or more places over otherwise impassable obstacles distinguishes bridges from all other types of structures or buildings. In the history of mankind, they have evolved with a great variety of profiles and construction menthods. Today, new technologies allow the implementation of projects with previously unattainable shapes and sizes.

Link it! features projects that combine sophisticated engineering skills with demanding esthetic concepts. It includes the work of established specialists as well as designs that were created by architects who usually focus on other sectors. All bridges share one characteristic – their outstanding qualities turn them into symbols of a city or an entire region.

Книга Living Buildings: Architectural Conservation : Philosophy, Principles and Practice является итогом 50-летней теоретической и практической работы автора по реставрации старых зданий от самых маленьких до больших, и даже целых исторических районов.

______________

'Living Buildings' celebrates the 50th anniversary of Donald Insall Associates, the firm led by British architect Donald Insall. Responsable for the restoration of Windsor Castle after a fire in 1992, Insallís preservation architecture has given longevity to Britainís stately homes, town halls, churches, entire city precincts, hospitals, royal palaces, castles, public buildings and public spaces.

In 1958, Insall and several of his colleagues founded a famous architectural practice in England based on architectural conservation, that is, the salvation, restoration, and rehabilitation of historic buildings and neighborhoods. (In the United States, this practice is called historic preservation.) This book commemorates these 50 years of professional practice, mostly in England, involving some of the United Kingdom's most cherished historic resources (e.g., Windsor Castle, Somerset House, and Covent Garden).

Divided into two sections, the book covers assessing, analyzing, planning, and implementing individual restoration projects ("Organizing the Project") and daily maintenance through radical rehabilitation to contextual new construction ("Degrees of Intervention").

Containing over 600 luxurious color maps, photos, and plans of a wide variety of projects in England, this work could easily serve as a textbook for a beginner's course in historic preservation. Recommended for academic and large public libraries.

Author Ma Yansong, Preface by Paul Goldberger, Introduction by Philip Jodidio
ID: 14252

A seductive vision of the future from the most promising firm in China led by Ma Yansong, an important voice in the new generation of architects.

Conceived and designed by Ma Yansong, founder of MAD Architects, MAD Rhapsody documents the buildings of this avant-garde architecture firm and traces the development of their ideas through associated practice including art, research, and exhibition projects. With photographs, drawings, and models, the book highlights 23 projects from the past six years, both built and in process. Known for their “organic and dreamlike architecture” that creates a dialogue with nature, earth, and sky, MAD projects reach all over the globe.

At age 46, Ma Yansong is one of China’s best-known architects. His curvilinear, free-form, and futuristic designs are often compared to those of his mentor, Zaha Hadid. Ma’s greatest inspiration is nature; his opera house in the northern Chinese city of Harbin resembles a snow-capped mountain, while his master plan for the city of Nanjing calls for sloping buildings covered with vertical louvers that resemble waterfalls. Other projects include the Ordos Museum in the wilderness of Inner Mongolia, the Absolute Towers in Canada, and the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art in Los Angeles.

About the Authors:

Ma Yansong is founder and principal partner of MAD Architects. Paul Goldberger is a contributing editor at Vanity Fair. Philip Jodidio has written more than 100 books about contemporary architecture.

  • здание должно гармонично вписываться в городскую застройку и ландшафт;
  • при выборе материалов учитываются климатические и другие условия окружающей среды;
  • сооружение должно отвечать санитарным и экологическим нормам, быть удобным для подъезда транспорта и подхода посетителей;
  • при проектировании здания должны учитываться возможности его последующей реконструкции;
  • предполагаемые затраты на эксплуатацию должны соотноситься с планируемыми доходами от оказываемых услуг;
  • архитектурные и дизайнерские решения должны соответствовать предназначению помещений и способствовать их комфортной эксплуатации.

Узнать больше об архитектуре общественных пространств поможет специализированная литература. В нашем каталоге это книги с разной стоимостью:
