An illustrated tour of the elegant entrances to New York City’s most celebrated apartment houses.

This handsome, oversized book introduces us to the grandest entrances of New York City’s residential buildings. These posh portals come in an array of forms and styles, such as the porte cochère, with a passage to admit carriages or motor cars; the classic awning, originally meant to be retracted in good weather; and Neoclassical, Romanesque, and Gothic revivals.

Architectural historian Andrew Alpern highlights approximately 140 entrances, from the nineteenth century to the present, including those of the Dakota, the first true luxury apartment house in New York; San Remo, one of Central Park West’s most impressive apartment houses; and the Ansonia, at one time the largest hotel in the world. Each entrance is accompanied by a description of its signal features and the history of the building that surrounds it. All are represented in splendid color photographs, and many by charming watercolor drawings.

These ornate entrances offer a glimpse into New York’s past, as well as its future—for today, once again, entryways have begun to feature heavily in the marketing of residential buildings. Posh Portals will be an inspiration for architects and a delight for city dwellers.

About the Author:

Andrew Alpern has a background as an attorney, architect, and architectural historian, and is the author of numerous books, most recently The Dakota: A History of the World's Best-Known Apartment Building.

Take an exclusive tour of three presidential residences in France — their histories, art, gardens, and architecture — discussed and photographed for the first time.

This volume offers a visit to the presidential residences of France: the Élysée Palace and its neighboring Hôtel de Marigny, the Lantern Pavilion hidden away in the park of Versailles, and the Brégançon Fort. These are the places where one can discover the excellence of French artisans, its art conservators and restaurateurs, and its famed gardeners. These sites of political theater and residences of the French president showcase France’s exceptional artistic heritage and present the great treasures of “French taste,” in perpetual reinvention from the eighteenth century through today, to diplomatic visitors from all over the world.

The text presents a new way of understanding these buildings and their history, one which puts in perspective their evolution in decor, public or secret, and which decrypts their symbolic power thanks to the author’s unprecedented access to the buildings and to archival documents.

About the Authors:

Adrien Goetz is an art historian and an acclaimed novelist, and a member of the Academie des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He currently teaches at the University of Paris-Sorbonne. Ambroise Tézenas has published several books and contributes regularly to magazines such as The New York Times Magazine, Architectural Digest, and W.

Robert A. M. Stern
ID: 6918
Издательство: Random House

At its best, the college campus is the representation of beliefs, of the specific character of a place, of a community, of an institution. It is the setting for the continually evolving interaction of people and ideas over time.
 -
Robert A. M. Stern

Ss an architect, educator, and architectural historian, Robert A. M. Stern brings special knowledge and expertise to issues of campus master planning and the design of academic buildings. This unique volume collects more than fifty projects by the firm for the most prestigious institutions in America - Harvard, Yale, Dartmouth, Georgetown, Stanford, University of Virginia - and focuses on the importance of the historic character of the place in charting the future.

In surveying the American campus, Stern begins with Thomas Jefferson’s Academical Village at the University of Virginia and then considers its many heirs. He organizes campuses into three principal paradigms: the Embedded Campus, those closely connected with the fabric of the cities and towns in which they sit; the Citadel Campus, those perched above and removed from the surroundings; and the Garden Campus, those whose buildings sit in a more casual configuration in the landscape.

Each campus is described in detail, with historic photographs and campus plans illustrating its development. Projects by Robert A. M. Stern Architects are placed in their context, providing a complete view of these distinguished places of learning.

Robert A. M. Stern is the founding partner of Robert A. M. Stern Architects and dean of the Yale School of Architecture. He is the author of the monumental five-volume history of New York’s architecture and urban development, culminating with New York 2000. Major current architectural projects include the new residential colleges at Yale University and the George W. Bush Presidential Center in Dallas.

Pamela Smart and Stephen Fox, Foreword by Christopher Rothko, Introduction by David Leslie
ID: 16326
Издательство: Rizzoli

A first look at the recently restored Rothko Chapel, a world-renowned destination for spiritual renewal, with all-new photography and scholarship of the renovated building and campus, published on the occasion of its 50th anniversary.

The Rothko Chapel -- home to 14 monumental modernist paintings by the pioneer Abstract Expressionist Mark Rothko--is an interfaith sacred space dedicated to global human rights, art, and spirituality, located in Houston. The Chapel was founded in 1971 by arts patrons and philanthropists Dominique and John de Menil, who placed their utmost faith in Rothko's vision to express the profound, the miraculous, and regard for the sanctity of the human spirit in this oasis for the intellect and the spirit.

Through photographic testimony and the insights of scholars, this large-format volume gives an intimate look at this sacred space, where visitors seek solace and inspiration within this truly ecumenical sanctuary featuring Rothko's iconic paintings. Pamela Smart discusses the spiritual side and Stephen Fox puts the architecture in the context of Houston.

The Chapel has been reworked within an expanded campus to enhance the experience for its many visitors. As viewers sit in stillness or move about the Chapel's serene octagonal enclosure, the reinstalled skylight better reveals the nuances of Rothko's powerful panels and allows for better connection to the outdoors as conditions shift, such as when clouds pass above.

About the Author:

Pamela Smart is Associate Professor of Anthropology and Art History at Binghamton University. Stephen Fox is an architectural historian and a Fellow of the Anchorage Foundation of Texas. Christopher Rothko is the second of Mark and Mary Alice Rothko's two children. He works to organize and present exhibitions of his father's work around the globe. David Leslie is the Executive Director of the Rothko Chapel.

School building architecture has greatly gained in pedagogical significance during the last years. Students of the 21st century have access to increasingly more workspaces customized for various studies, rooms for teamwork and cafeterias. Multi-functional communal spaces, exhibition spaces and sports facilities also play an important role in education.

Creating spaces that take into account both students' educational needs and their well-being is one of the most exciting and challenging tasks of contemporary school building design. School presents international projects which set themselves apart not only with their modern architectural vocabulary but also with their architects’ hope of being their contribution to the improvement of educational standards.

Richard Ingersoll, Photographs by Mario Ciampi

Senigallia Public Library is an in-depth analysis of a single project realized by Italian architects Massimo and Gabriella Carmassi in the historic center of Senigallia (located in the Marche region of Italy) to create the town’s library and archive. The renovation of this early nineteenth-century complex is an outstanding example of how the fabric of historic buildings can be used to make spectacular modern architecture. Rather than restore the buildings to some idealized original state and adapt them to a new purpose, the architects integrated existing pieces of the structures with new construction. The masterful use materials - metal, wood, concrete, glass, ancient brick - resulted in timeless spaces that have a unique combination of contemporary style and an appropriate reflective atmosphere. Echoing the architects’ creation, this handsomely produced book also uses a variety of materials - uncoated and coated paper stocks, vellum pages, and a sophisticated cloth jacket.

The book also includes an introduction by Richard Ingersoll that offers a complete description of the restoration.

This is the first book to document the highly innovative Terminal 3 at Shenzhen Bao'an International Airport in China, scheduled for completion in 2013.

Shenzhen is one China's most important industrial locations as well as a very popular tourist destination. The fast-developing city is located in the south of the Guangdong Province, neighboring the Pearl River delta and Hong Kong. In 2008 the Italian architects Massimiliano and Doriana Fuksas (M Fuksas) won the international competition for the extension of the airport with the design of Terminal 3. The book contains never-before-seen sketches, models, renderings, drawings, and all-new photography of the building, as well as an interview with the architect. Collaborating with Fuksas is the engineering firm Knipper Helbig, who contributes an essay on the engineering and structural approach of the project. The design of the terminal, which resembles an airplane from above, caters to the passengers' needs while taking account environmental and socio-economic factors. The sculptural, organically shaped steel structure incorporates an innovative two-layer honeycomb skin which reduces energy consumption and allows natural light to permeate the space. Specifically designed to make the most effective use of local resources and built by local contractors, Shenzhen is the first airport terminal certified to the National Green Building Star Label in China

Why wood?

Though it is one of the world’s oldest building materials, wood is still revolutionizing the way buildings are designed and constructed today. It is imperative that everyone considers how construction practices impact climate change. Timber buildings are not only environmentally responsible — they also make us feel measurably happier, healthier, and more productive, benefiting both individuals and organizations.

Shigeru Ban Architects has innovated in wood for over 35 years, creating inspiring spaces that have a positive impact on building inhabitants, communities, and the environment. The firm has built over 65 wood and mass timber projects, from prefabricated plywood houses to parametrically modeled glulam gridshells.

Timber in Architecture presents the trajectory of 45 works from concept through construction, demonstrating the challenges and merits of wood buildings through essays, technical drawings, and photographs. Featured projects include the Centre Pompidou-Metz (Metz, France, 2010), the Aspen Art Museum (Aspen, Colorado, USA, 2014), the Mt. Fuij World Heritage Centre (Shizuoka, Japan, 2019), and Swatch/Omega Campus (Biel/Bienne, Switzerland, 2019), as well as current works.

About the Authors:

Shigeru Ban is an architect, educator, and humanitarian with a global perspective. Upon completing his studies at the Cooper Union, Ban established Shigeru Ban Architects in 1985. In 1994, Ban founded the Voluntary Architects Network, an NGO through which he has provided a wide array of relief projects for nearly 30 years. Today, his multidisciplinary practice includes offices in Tokyo, Paris, and New York, with more than 150 projects constructed across six continents. In addition to his design work, Ban is dedicated to teaching the next generation of architects, and has taught at numerous institutions, including Tama Art University, Keio University, Harvard GSD, Cornell AAP, and Columbia GSAPP. For his architectural, cultural, and humanitarian contributions, Ban has been honored as a Pritzker Laureate, and the recipient of L’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres, the National Order of the Legion of Honor in France, the Thomas Jefferson Foundation Medal in Architecture, and the Mother Teresa Award for Social Justice.

More than thirty years ago Tadao Ando started to establish himself as one of the best designers on the international scene for the rigor and character of his works, and ever since his intense activity has moved tirelessly between private residences and public buildings.

Each of Ando’s museums has added a small piece to the construction of a cohesive path based on a strong and clear use of geometry, the employment of few materials in the right proportions, the harmony of the spaces, and a relationship with the landscape. From this point of view, his series of museums communicates the Japanese master’s design philosophy perfectly.

This book has been put together with the architect, who, through an important and exclusive series of study sketches, images, and models, tells us of his works and his way of seeing and conceiving architecture including the construction of the museum.

From the early buildings accomplished in Naoshima, Osaka and Oyamazaki, through the Pulitzer Center in Chicago, the Museum of Modern Art in Fort Worth, and the restructuring of Palazzo Grassi in Venice, readers will be guided into the reserved and rigorous world of Tadao Ando, gaining a sense of the "secret" of his project work.

Philip Jodidio, Tadao Ando
ID: 17258
Издательство: Rizzoli

An in-depth look at the modern sacred spaces in Japan, Korea, and France designed by the world-renowned Japanese architect, giving unprecedented access to his thought process through photographs, sketches, and plans.

Tadao Ando is one of the best-known and most influential architects of the contemporary age. His work is unmistakably spiritual, even for a nonbeliever. Heavily influenced by Japanese traditions and primarily interested in using concrete as a building material, Ando leverages simplicity in order to make it easy for people to experience the spirit and beauty of nature, leaving out ornament in favor of emphasizing the buildings’ surroundings and embeddedness with the natural world. To Ando, sunlight, wind, and rain are expressions of the natural world, and geometry is also part of the underlying reality of life.

Philip Jodidio provides insight into Ando’s unique way of envisioning spiritual spaces, which intermingle simplicity with mystery, rationality with wild nature. The volume features thirteen places in depth, many for the first time in glorious full-color — from the Hill of the Buddha in Sapporo, Japan, which is surrounded by thousands of lavender plants, to the Meditation Space in Paris, where one can pause for a moment of quiet reflection. The Church of the Light is marked only by a cruciform opening that leaves the spectator to contemplate the qualities of form, light, and space. At the Water Temple, an elliptical lotus pond appears behind a curved wall, and a narrow flight of stairs in the middle of the pond leads down to the inner sanctum. As Ando writes in his preface, the book reflects his lifelong study of spaces for worship, where people gather, and it represents a special period in his life where he has become more focused on his spiritual work.

About the Authors:

Tadao Ando is a world-renowned Japanese architect and recipient of the Pritzker Architecture Prize in 1995. Philip Jodidio was editor-in-chief of the French art monthly Connaissance des Arts from 1980 to 2002. Jodidio has written over 100 books about contemporary architecture and art including Tadao Ando: Living with Light, Tadao Ando: Houses, and I. M. Pei: The Complete Works for Rizzoli.

Photographs by Thomas R. Schiff, Text by Alberto Manguel
ID: 12518
Издательство: Aperture

In pre–Revolutionary War America, libraries were member-driven collections for the elite; it was not until 1790 that Benjamin Franklin helped to establish the first public lending library. Throughout the subsequent centuries the library has evolved, but always remained central to the cultural life of the nation. Thomas R. Schiff’s photographs trace the history of the library through aesthetic and style while featuring legendary architects such as Charles F. McKim; Shepley, Rutan and Coolidge; and I. M. Pei.

The Library Book beautifully captures the shifting architectural styles and missions of the library in sweeping 360-degree panoramas — from the very earliest American libraries to the modernist masterpieces of Louis I. Kahn and others. In his introductory essay, acclaimed author and library lover Alberto Manguel considers the story of the library in America, its evolving architecture and cultural role, and how the American model reflects the archetypal idea of the universal library. Including brief descriptions of each unique library, this book brings bibliophiles into one hundred libraries across the nation.

Thomas R. Schiff studied photography under Clarence White, Jr. and Arnold Gassan while earning a BBA degree from Ohio University in 1970. Schiff began experimenting with panoramic photography in the mid-1980s, making use of a Hulcherama 360 panoramic camera. He has published six books: Panoramic Cincinnati (2003), Panoramic Ohio (2002), Panoramic Parks (2005), Vegas 360 (2008), Wright Panorama (2010), and Prospect (2012). Schiff helped establish Images Center in Cincinnati in 1980 and he is the founder of FotoFocus, a lens-based art biennial held in Cincinnati. He has just completed a book about the architectural legacy of J. Irwin Miller and the city of Columbus, Indiana.

About the Author:

Alberto Manguel is internationally acclaimed as an anthologist, translator, essayist, novelist, and editor. He is the author of several award-winning books, including The Dictionary of Imaginary Places and A History of Reading. He was born in Buenos Aires, moved to Canada in 1982, and now lives in France, where he was named a Chevalier de l’Ordre français des Arts et des Lettres. His honors and awards include a Guggenheim Fellowship, McKitterick first novel award, and German Critics Award, among others.

James W. P. Campbell, Will Pryce
ID: 13415
Издательство: Thames & Hudson

The definitive worldwide architectural history of the library, with spectacular original photography by one of the finest architectural photographers at work today

Ambitious and wide-ranging, this is the first single-volume to tell the story of the library as a distinct building type, all around the world and from the beginnings of writing to the present day.

Book collections have always served to display their owners’ culture and learning and the word ‘library’ has come to mean not only the books themselves, but also the buildings that house them. Each age and culture has moulded them to reflect its own priorities and preoccupations – mirroring the history of civilization itself.

In its highest form the library became a total work of art, combining painting, sculpture, furniture and architecture. From their designs for the libraries of ancient Rome to those of the Bibliothèque Nationale in Paris, architects have sought to outdo each other by producing ever more spectacular settings.

The author and photographer have travelled the globe, documenting some eighty libraries. Architectural historian James Campbell contributes an authoritative and highly readable account. Will Pryce is one of the world’s leading photographers of interiors and architecture. Arresting and technically flawless, his photographs are both lucid and deeply atmospheric.

Издательство: Rizzoli

A book dedicated to the newly constructed expansion of the Kennedy Center that provides a new topology for performing-arts centers and a view of how art is made, designed by one of America’s most influential architects.

As the first major expansion in Kennedy Center history, the REACH breaks down boundaries between audience and art. Set adjacent to the Kennedy Center along the Potomac River in Washington, D.C., the REACH is set to open in 2019. As a “living memorial” for John F. Kennedy, the Center for the Performing Arts takes an active position among the great presidential monuments of the Jefferson and Lincoln memorials. Steven Holl Architects envisions the expansion of the building to fuse with the landscape and river, connecting the Kennedy Center to the Potomac riverfront for the first time: walk through a grove of thirty-five ginkgo trees, watch a free outdoor simulcast performance projected on a wall in a public park, or look out at the Potomac from a river pavilion café. The book offers a comprehensive look at the history of the project and includes programming initiatives by the Kennedy Center to memorialize President Kennedy and his significant contribution to the arts and American culture.

About the Author:

Steven Holl is the founder and principal of Steven Holl Architects in New York. Holl has won many awards, and his work has been presented at the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
