Chronicles the influence of the art poster in France and its rapid spread across Europe and United States

The lowly placard, a quick and efficient device used to spread news or advertise goods, ascended to the level of a respected art form in the late 1800s in France. The ‘art poster’ was born at the convergence of new aesthetic movements, technological advances and societal changes. Fine artists were swayed from their lofty perches to join the practical arts, influenced by the egalitarian spirit of the Arts and Crafts movement. Artist Jules Cheret, ‘Father of the Modern Poster,’ perfected a means of high-quality printing that produced large, colour-saturated images. An emerging middle class was the ready target for the consumption of newly manufactured goods, literary publications, theatrical events and leisure time entertainment. Thierry Mugler staged the most spectacular fashion shows of his time. He dressed many celebrities, including Diana Ross, David Bowie, Lady Gaga, Liza Minnelli, Céline Dion and Kim Kardashian. He created the costumes for many of Mylène Farmer’s and Beyoncé’s tours and videos. This book was published in conjunction with the exhibition and is organised into several main sections. Marc Stickdorn is a German entrepreneur and service design consultant. In 2010, Marc and Jakob published the award-winning book “This is Service Design Thinking”. He is a visiting professor at various business and design schools.
In 2012, Marc co-founded smaply, a web-based software to visualize personas, stakeholder maps, and customer journey maps. In 2013, he co-founded ExperienceFellow, a combination of smartphone apps and web-based software to research customer experience. ExperienceFellow is based on mobile ethnography; an approach Marc develops since 2008. Although he won several best paper awards for his academic publications on mobile ethnography, he still did not finnish his PhD.

Jakob Schneider is a visual designer and consultant. He is partner and creative director of design agency KD1 as well as co-founder and lead designer of startups Smaply and ExperienceFellow. Since 2006, he has worked for brands like VW, Siemens, MetaDesign and Deutsche Telekom. Jakob co-published “This is Service Design Thinking” with Marc Stickdorn in 2010 and speaks at universities, conferences and agencies. Besides his daily agency business, Jakob works on digital tools for Service Designers.

He has also become known for his highly conceptual runway presentations which have gained global attention for their thought-provoking themes and dramatic settings. in 2023 he became chairman of the CFDA.

Andrew Bolton is the Wendy Yu curator in charge at The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute in New York and has curated some of the Museum’s most visited exhibitions, including Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty (2011) and Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination (2018). He has written more than twenty books, lectures widely, and contributes to many publications. Prior to joining The Met in 2002, he worked at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London for nine years.
