China has a long history of cloth making and silk products were already available as early as the Yin Dynasty. The patterns selected for this book have been collected from clothing patterns of dynasties past. To give these special patterns contemporary relevance, the patterns have been adapted, recreated and refined with Adobe Illustrator and kept in a vector format, and can be easily used by designers of any discipline, be it in fashion, textile, graphic or interior design. All of the files are contained on the enclosed CD.

The art of faience tile making had found its way from Arabic North Africa from where it had slowly progressed northward via Spain, Italy (mainly the city of Faenza, hence the French “faïence”) and Antwerp to arrive about 1570 in the northern Dutch province of Friesland. The Royal Tichelaar Makkum from which the designs in this book originate is the oldest enterprise in the Netherlands and indeed ranks it among the oldest companies in the world. Many of the designs this factory has been using over the years have been compiled in an ancient volume kept in the historical collection of their archives, along with many examples of actual antique tiles. For the first time a selection of these has now been made available for publication in this book.

This is a sister book of “The Traditional Japanese Color”, and focuses on the beauty of Japanese traditional color combination. This book explores the aesthetic of color combination in the traditional Japanese art works, which show its various aspects and constitute the exquisite world of color. About 100 examples of two, three or more color combinations in various fields from painting to annual events in the Japanese art and culture will be included.
