Handbook of Tyranny portrays the routine cruelties of the twenty-first century through a series of detailed non-fictional graphic illustrations. None of these cruelties represent extraordinary violence — they reflect day-to-day implementation of laws and regulations around the globe.

Every page of the book questions our current world of walls and fences, police tactics and prison cells, crowd control and refugee camps. The dry and factual style of storytelling through technical drawings is the graphic equivalent to bureaucratic rigidity born of laws and regulations. The level of detail depicted in the illustrations of the book mirror the repressive efforts taken by authorities around the globe.

The twenty-first century shows a general striving for an ever more regulated and protective society. Yet the scale of authoritarian intervention and their stealth design adds to the growing difficulty of linking cause and effect. Handbook of Tyranny gives a profound insight into the relationship between political power, territoriality and systematic cruelties.

This new edition includes updated figures and eight additional pages.

For some time in the distant past, hand-lettering used to be a highly-regarded skill to master and was ubiquitous via publications and public signages. Although society relies heavily on keyboards and screens for communication today, a growing number of creative practitioners have been busy reviving the seemingly-lost art in recent years, in a bid to return the sincerity and warmth of the human touch to our predominantly digital lives. Brimming with character, hand-lettering serves as the bridge between old-school calligraphy and modern typography to bring nuance back into an age of uniformity.

As an update of the original release in 2017, the ‘Handstyle Lettering’ 2022 edition rereleased in conjunction with Victionary’s 20th anniversary is a delightful showcase of artworks from around the world that are anything but unvaried. With an additional selection of new projects, the book also features insightful interviews from the best calligraphers as well as an expanded, beginner-friendly guide/practice area.

Magnificent monograph celebrating the one-hundredth birthday of the great Danish designer

The name Hans J. Wegner (1914–2007) is inseparable from his unrivalled chairs, which helped Danish design to achieve its international breakthrough. Every design fan has his or her favorite from among Wegner’s approximately five hundred creations. Today, there is hardly a glossy interior design magazine that does not include an illustration of the elegant China Chair (1943) or the Y Chair (1950), and even John F. Kennedy sat on his Round Chair, which is now simply called The Chair (1949). Trained as a furniture maker, Wegner usually made his prototypes himself by hand, using traditional joinery techniques such as tongue-and-groove or finger joints. In the process he pushed the limitations of wood, giving his designs an unmatched elegance. His sense of humor did not fall by the wayside, either, as evidenced by his splendid Peacock Chair (1947) or the masculine Ox Chair (1960), that latter of which is available with or without horns.

Stepping bravely into the cyclone of 21st-century fashions, Harry Styles is more than weathering the storm. Whether he’s breaking the internet with his $7.99 frog-eyed yellow bucket hat or a pair of black fishnets, or fronting cult magazine The Beauty Papers, as he did in March 2021, Hazza’s sparkle knows no boundaries.

Gucci met Styles in 2014, and there was instant chemistry. According to designer Alessandro Michele, Harry is ‘a young Greek God with the attitude of James Dean and a little bit of Mick Jagger’ – and that effortless superstardom certainly radiates from the photos in this collection, which document the heart of Harry’s wardrobe, both on-stage and off.

Part fashion history lesson, pulling references from the rock and roll greats of the past, and part innovation, Harry’s style pays homage to Kurt Cobain and Marc Bolan, Prince and Little Richard, while developing into something authentic and entirely his own. This chic book fizzles with facts about Harry’s styling choices, presenting the star’s most revered looks alongside pictures that trace the roots of each design. With quotes from key designers, this is the perfect gift for any fan.

- A guide to the style of Harry Styles, a 21st-century fashion icon
- Over 100 pictures of Harry and the pop-idols who have influenced his sartorial taste
- The perfect gift for fans and fashionistas
- A luxurious cloth cover with quarter binding

Written by Steven Heller and Mirko Ilic
ID: 12508
Издательство: Rizzoli

A beautifully designed flexibound edition that comes in a slipcase, this is a first of it’s kind celebration featuring more than 600 examples of the human body as represented in graphic design, this innovative book will appeal to art directors, graphic designers, and design fans.

This groundbreaking volume investigates and illuminates a new generation of artists and the ways that they relate to one of art history’s most storied traditions: nude figure drawing and painting. This informative (and occasionally very cheeky) book demonstrates the ways in which new mediums and new technologies are pushing graphic designers to previously untold heights of artistic representation, thereby cementing the graphic designer’s place alongside more traditional mediums (drawing, painting) in art history and criticism.

From PETA’s infamous “I’d Rather Go Nude” ad campaign, to John Lennon and Yoko Ono posing nude on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine, Head to Toe features myriad examples of the nude figure and how it is altered and manipulated in the service of both art and commerce.

About the Authors:

Mirko Ilic teaches at the School of Visual Arts in New York City. He has previously served as art director for both the op-ed section of the New York Times and the international edition of Time Magazine. He has worked with almost every major publication, including Rolling Stone, National Geographic, the Wall Street Journal, and Sports Illustrated. He has received numerous awards and his work is featured in the permanent collections of both the Smithsonian and New York’s Museum of Modern Art.

Steven Heller is the author and editor of over 130 books on graphic design, satiric art, and popular culture. Heller is the cofounder and cochair of the MFA Designer as Author program at the School of Visual Arts, New York. He is also cofounder of the MFA in Design Criticism, MFA in Interaction Design, MFA Social Documentary Film, and MPS Branding programs. He has devoted much of his career to fostering design education venues, opportunities, and environments.

Anthony Jones

Издательство: Design Studio Press

The afterlife — a place that fills our hearts and minds with wonder as well as dread. What is in store for us there? Will there be suffering or redemption for our souls, or both? Who or what holds the power in the afterlife? And is there no escape?

Heaven’s Hell: The Art of Anthony Jones unveils one artist’s exploration of this shadowy realm and the beautiful and haunting beings battling over it. Meet the sultry and fearless sisters of Haliled, the scheming Crimson and Sapphire Sages, and the mighty brothers of Jisais — all of whom don the most sensual, imaginative attire — drawn and painted in striking detail that will captivate curious minds. Jones’s artwork is undeniably provocative and unsettling simultaneously — this effect is ultimately his intention — for the afterlife holds as much mystery as it does terror: it is both heaven and hell.

About the Author:

Anthony Jones has worked as an artist in the entertainment industry since 2008. He has worked for several notable companies over his career, including Sony, Blizzard Entertainment, Paramount, Western Costumes, Applibot, Wizards of the Coast, and Hasbro. But he is most proud of his role as a teacher, helping aspiring artists finesse their skills, as well as providing them a venue where they can showcase their work, through his company, Robotpencil.

Издательство: Thames & Hudson

A revised and expanded edition of the book described by Books Monthly as ‘an absolute gem. A bible, in fact’.
