About the Authors:

Joanna Hardy is a gemologist, offering consultancy and evaluation. She brings her substantial knowledge of the field to this book, having worked for De Beers, Philips and Sotheby's. With Thames & Hudson, she has previously published Collect Contemporary Jewelry, Emerald and Ruby. She is a regular guest on Antiques Roadshow. 

Claire Wilcox is the Chair in Fashion Curation at the London College of Fashion as well as Senior Curator of Fashion at the Victoria & Albert museum since 2004. Among the exhibitions she curated at the V&A are Vivienne Westwood (2004) and From Club to Catwalk: London Fashion in the 1980s (2013) and Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty (2015). 

Vivienne Becker is a jewellery writer, historian and journalist, having authored several books on the subject. She is a Contributing Editor to How to Spend It magazine (Financial Times), and her list of published books include Art Nouveau Jewelry, Fabulous Costume Jewellery and Read My Pins: Stories from a Diplomat's Jewel Box, which topped the NY Times bestseller list

Through archival drawings and photographs, and newly shot sheer silhouettes designed by Yves Saint Laurent from the collections of the Musée Yves Saint Laurent Paris and the Museum for Lace and Fashion, Calais, Sheer: The Diaphanous Creations of Yves Saint Laurent highlights the couturier’s pioneering work in lace and other sheer fabrics, uncovering how he was able to overturn codes of unveiling the body to present a new, powerful and sensual feminine figure.

The book shows how he worked to ‘reveal’ the body of the woman wearing his clothes with both elegance and audacity: the Nude Dress of 1968, for example, made entirely of transparent chiffon, provided ‘modesty’ in the form of ostrich feathers. Original outfits, sketches, collection boards and fabric swatches give an intimate window into the designs, while photographs of models and clients such as Catherine Deneuve and Naomi Campbell bring to life the designer’s creations in a way that still shocks even now.

Twentieth-century Japanese printmaking has come in for relatively little attention up to now. This publication sets out to change that. Shin hanga (new prints) are harmoniously balanced designs, printed on the highest-quality paper using the finest pigments and in small editions. They are the fruit of a traditional yet successful collaboration between artist, publisher, block cutter and printer. It is not so much in their subject matter as through their visual language that shin hanga prints set themselves apart from their traditional precursors.

This book presents a unique selection that lets us explore Japanese printmaking in the 20th century. The prints it reproduces are mostly drawn from two large private collections, supplemented by works from the Royal Museums of Art and History in Brussels and several exceptional items from the family collection of the publisher Watanabe, the person who started it all.
