A singular, personal celebration of the beauty and possibilities of nature

Amy Merrick is a rare and special kind of artist who uses flowers to help us see the familiar in a completely new way. Her gift is to revel in the unexpected — like a sunny spring arrangement housed in a paper coffee cup — and to overturn preconceptions, whether she’s transforming a bouquet of supermarket carnations into a breathtaking centerpiece or elevating wild and weedy blooms foraged from city sidewalks. She uses the beauty that is waiting to be discovered all around us — in leaves, branches, seedpods, a fallen blossom — to tell a story of time and place.

Merrick begins On Flowers with a primer containing all her hard-won secrets on the art of flower arranging, from selecting materials to mastering pleasing proportions. Then she brings readers along on her journey, with observations on flowers in New York City and at her family’s summer home in rural New Hampshire, working on a flower farm off the coast of Washington State, and studying ikebana in a jewel-box flower shop in Kyoto. We learn how to send flowers like a florist, and how to arrange them like a farm girl. We discover the poignancy in humble wildflowers, and also celebrate the luxury of fragrant blousy blooms. Collected here is an anthology of floral inspiration, a love letter to nature by an exceptional, accidental florist.

About the Author:

Amy Merrick is a traveling writer and stylist who started her career as a florist in New York City. Her flowers have been featured in Vogue and Architectural Digest and at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, MoMA PS1, and Bergdorf Goodman. She has written about her experiences with gardens, flowers, and design for the Wall Street Journal.

t is the purpose of Optic to attempt a survey of optical effects in graphic design and to help distinguish their various forms.

In 1962, when Peter Dixon joined the Sainsbury’s Design Studio, a remarkable revolution in packaging design began. The supermarket was developing its distinctive range of Own Label products, and Dixon’s designs for the line were revolutionary: simple, stripped down, creative, and completely different from what had gone before. Their striking modernity pushed the boundaries, reflecting a period full of optimism. They also helped build Sainsbury’s into a brand giant, the first real ‘super’ market of the time. This book examines and celebrates this paradigm shift that redefined packaging design, and led to the creation of some of the most original packaging ever seen.

Produced in collaboration with the Sainsbury family and The Sainsbury Archive, the book reveals an astonishing and exhaustive body of work. A unique insight into what and how we ate, the packaging is presented using both scanned original flat packets and photographic records made at the time. With an essay by Emily King featuring interviews with Peter Dixon and Lord Sainsbury of Preston Candover.

In our haste to consume the things we love, we often disregard or discard packaging without a second thought. While many would argue that they bear no significance or should be done away with in our quest to save the environment, there is a lot more to packaging design than meets the eye. On top of conveying a brand’s personality, purpose, or message meaningfully and embodying its contents in ways that catch the eye, a seemingly ordinary bottle or box can become an artist or designer’s canvas for extraordinary creative expression.

Packaged for Life: Chocolate features a delectable collection of creative packaging design work for one of the most popular snacks in the world today that even the ancient Mayans enjoyed! The projects serve as morsels of inspiration and visual treats as appealing as the sinfully delightful product itself.

Rather than be taken for granted, these feel-good goods deserve their time in the spotlight not only for the roles that they play, but also for the visual and aesthetic richness they add to our day-to-day just by sitting on our shelves. Packaged for Life is a simple ode to the products that punctuate our daily existence with joy and equip us with the calm to carry on, as they continue to shape our communities and cultures as indulgences, necessities, or vices.

Packaged for Life: Coffee & Tea highlights some of the most clever and delightful packaging design work for what the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organisation deems as ‘the most consumed beverage in the world’. It serves as a vessel of inspiration through which we can recognise, appreciate, and celebrate the unnoticed or overlooked tactile beauty in everyday product packaging.

The book comes with a booklet of fun facts about the beverages featured, including the unique ways they are enjoyed around the world, and the steps involved in a Japanese tea ceremony!
