This beautiful volume features 103 superb pieces of European furniture dating from the Renaissance to the late nineteenth century from the collection of The Metropolitan Museum. Examples by many outstanding European designer-craftsmen, such as Andre-Charles Boulle, Thomas Chippendale, David Roentgen, and Karl Friedrich Schinkel, are included, as well as important works by unknown makers. In detailed texts, which incorporate new archival and technical information, the authors discuss the history and significance of each piece. An introduction by Danielle Kisluk-Grosheide presents the history of the Museum's distinguished furniture collection. Colour reproductions of the furniture are presented in overall views and many details, all of which were made specifically for this book. Three hundred fifty-eight additional colour images are included on a CD-ROM at the back of the book.

Europe in the nineteenth century was a region of great political and industrial change, so it was inevitable that the period would be responsible for a wide variety of different styles. In addition, other influences filtered into Europe from Turkey, Africa, and the Far and Middle East, having a notable impact on design and decoration throughout the century.

This is the first book to celebrate the life and work of Grant Featherston (1922–1995), the Melbourne-based industrial designer best-known for his Contour chairs. This collection was designed and developed in the early 1950s and remains highly sought after by mid-century modern collectors in Australia and overseas – often fetching $10,000 or more at auction.

Featherston, later joined by his second wife, Mary, designed hundreds of chairs over the next thirty years; however, this astonishing Australian industrial design partnership has gone largely uncelebrated until now. Featherston focuses on the chairs produced between 1947 and 1975 and presents a new biography of the designer, drawn from archival research and interviews with his peers. Franco Albini (1905-1977) was an original creator in the fields of furniture, product design, architecture, urban planning and interior design. He was incredibly successful during his career, receiving numerous awards and prizes in recognition of his remarkable aesthetic that challenged traditional design structures. Among his most famous objects are Poltroncina Luisa (1950) and the series on pets, the Cicognino table (1952) and the Fiorenza chair (1952).

François Linke (1855-1946), born in Pankraz, Bohemia, is considered by many as the greatest Parisian cabinetmaker of his day, at a time when the worldwide influence of French fashion was at its height.

The ancien régime has always been the greatest source of inspiration for artistic design in France and, influenced amongst others by the de Goncourt brothers, the Louis XV and Louis XVI styles were revived to wide popular appeal. During the Second Empire these styles were so eclectic that they became debased. Linke wanted to create a fresh new style and his association with the enigmatic sculptor Léon Messagé resulted in a highly original series of designs, based on the rococo style fused with the latest fashion in Paris, l'art nouveau. This style, known as le style Linke, was received with critical acclaim at the 1900 exhibition and remains popular today amongst the worldwide clientele for Linke's exquisitely made furniture.

The book, with 140,000 words of text and over 700 unique photographs, many previously unpublished and drawn from Linke's own archive and private collections, has ten chapters showing the development of this exacting and prolific man's life work. It traces his early life and apprenticeship and his comfortable family life in Paris, culminating with the award of the Légion d'honneur. Anton Pössenbacher (1842–1920), cabinet-maker to the Bavarian court in Munich, was head of one of the largest late 19th-century German makers of luxury furnishings. His furniture, especially those for King Ludwig II of Bavaria (1871–1886), represent German Historicism at its zenith. Pössenbacher created almost all the furniture for the royal apartments at Linderhof, Herrenchiemsee and Neuschwanstein. Intricately carved and lavishly upholstered in gold brocade and dazzling embroidered pictures, these furnishings are highlights in the sumptuous interiors of Bavarian castles. In 2009 she established her own studio. Sean Kelly is a British, New York-based gallerist, contemporary art dealer, and owner of the Sean Kelly Gallery, New York. Jay Merrick is an architecture critic of The Independent and a regular essayist for the Architects Journal. He also contributes to leading magazines such as Blueprint, ArtReview and the periodical London Magazine.
