Text by Vicente Gallart, Valentino Garavani, Christian Lacroix, Suzy Menkes, Mario Testino
ID: 16117
Издательство: Rizzoli

Model, muse, stylist, and fashion icon: this book explores the relationship between mirror, dress, designer, photography, and especially Naty Abascal as an inspiration.

The publication presents a handpicked selection of designs by Cristóbal Balenciaga, Oscar de la Renta, Eliee Saab, Yves Saint Laurent and Valentino, among others. Abascal has been part of the history of these haute couture masters, not only as a model, but also as a muse, inspiration, and companion of their most significant successes, in daily life and in the pages of fashion magazines.

This book marks the occasion of the exhibition Naty Abascal and Fashion! organized by Museo Jumex, Mexico City, from November 7, 2019 to January 5, 2020. Like the exhibition, it aims to evoke the big ateliers or couture studios, whose mirrors have witnessed the evolution of fashion, along with designers and models. Their reflections highlight the unique details of the cut and the proportion of the outfits that contribute to the transformation of the female silhouette, which testifies to contemporary times like any other art form. It features contributions by Valentino Garavani, Christian Lacroix, Mario Testino, Veronica Etro, Suzy Menkes and Fernando Rius and photographs by Lord Snowdon, Richard Avedon, Peter Beard, Frank Horvat, Jonathan Segade, Chantelle Dosser, Norman Parkinson, Mario Testino, Mario Sierra and Riccardo Labougle.

About the Author:

Domenico Dolce, Stefano Gabbana
ID: 17237
Издательство: Rizzoli

Black, the most powerful and overwhelming non-color, is the symbol of Dolce & Gabbana and encapsulates opposite feelings that attract: sensuality and rigor, tragedy and love.

In this large-format black-and-white book, the great masters of Italian and international reportage are contrasted with the most important fashion photographers, who have interpreted Dolce & Gabbana Black from behind their lenses since the 1980s. These include Helmut Newton, Inez & Vinoodh, Giuseppe Leone, Enzo Brai, Salvo Alibrio, Sergio Larrain, Bruno Barbey, Ellen von Unwerth, Gian Paolo Barbieri, Fabrizio Ferri, and Juergen Teller.

In these photographic masterpieces, which range from advertising campaigns to the most iconic editorials, the stars of cinema, entertainment, and fashion — featuring Monica Bellucci and Isabella Rossellini among others — will alternate with suggestive portraits of ordinary people, some never before seen by the general public and published here for the first time, in a constant dialog that puts Dolce & Gabbana Black at the center.

About the Author:

Domenico Dolce, born in Sicily, near Palermo, in 1958, started to work with his father in the family clothing business while studying fashion design. Stefano Gabbana, born in Milan in 1962, began to work in various fashion studios with a graphic design background. They met when Stefano Gabbana phoned the tailor’s workshop where Domenico Dolce was working; they became life companions and founded the Dolce & Gabbana company. Their debut dates back to October 1985, when the designers presented their first collection to great success. Since then, Dolce & Gabbana has experienced a constant, unstoppable ascendancy.

Author Jeffrey Banks and Doria de la Chapelle, Foreword by Ralph Rucci, Afterword by Kenneth Pool
ID: 15793
Издательство: Rizzoli

The first book dedicated to the career and creations of esteemed fashion designer Norman Norell, the man hailed as the “Dean of American Fashion” by the New York Times.

Norman Norell (1900–1972) — the first American designer to employ couture techniques, refined workmanship, and luxurious fabrics — made dresses, coats, and suits that critics deemed “the equal of Paris,” earning him the sobriquet “the American Balenciaga” and forever changing perceptions about New York’s Seventh Avenue garment industry.

Norell showed the world that American design could climb to great heights by producing collection after collection that was both elegant and practical. He singlehandedly shaped the character of the ready-to-wear industry and served as a role model to younger generations of American designers. Early jobs included creating costumes for film and stage and outfits for the stars themselves, as well as working for fashion entrepreneur Hattie Carnegie. Norell brought to the world a lean sophistication and American glamour in his daytime suits, jersey separates, swing coats, and his shimmering sequined “mermaid” dresses. Clients included Lauren Bacall, Babe Paley, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Lena Horne, Dinah Shore, Marilyn Monroe, and Lady Bird Johnson. Norell was the first thoroughly modern American designer — and his dresses are still prized by stylish women today.

About the Authors:

Jeffrey Banks is a Coty Award–winning designer of men’s and women’s apparel. Doria de La Chapelle is a freelance writer. She has written on fashion, beauty, and style for Mademoiselle magazine and other publications. Ralph Rucci is a fashion designer and artist. Stan Herman is a clothing designer and former CFDA president. Kenneth Pool is a bridal-dress designer and Norell collector.

Kaat Debo, Elisa De Wyngaert, Vanessa Friedman, Lydia Kamitsis, Wim Mertens
ID: 16279
Издательство: Rizzoli

The first complete monograph on Olivier Theyskens surveys his twenty-year career and documents the highly anticipated return of his eponymous label.

Olivier Theyskens’s refined sensibilities earned him international acclaim as the dark prince of late 1990s couture. From his first saturnine collections, to his new vision for Rochas, to his patterns and textiles at Nina Ricci, to his years designing for Theyskens’ Theory, the designer has proved himself a master of couture, semi-couture, and prêt-à-porter. Celebrated for his fine tailoring, romantic silhouettes, and gothic palette, Theyskens transforms each house he helms. This distinctive volume charts the twenty-year development of an extraordinary aesthetic vision, rendered across countries, cultures, and the shifting sands of the fashion landscape.

Newly commissioned texts connect the threads of the Belgian-born artist’s diverse practice. Drawings created for the publication accompany photography from each period of his career. At both Rochas and Nina Ricci, the designer crafted ethereal garments with unorthodox silhouettes, mixing sheer fabrics and old-world bustles with subtly subversive punk elements. Theyskens then broke ground in 2011 with his trailblazing partnership, Theyskens’ Theory. With a special focus on the designer’s return to the runway at the head of his own line, this is the definitive work on a fashion visionary who, like the girls he designs for, changes form, but walks in beauty wherever he goes.

Alexis Walker, Nicola Pelly
ID: 17335
Издательство: Rizzoli

A chronicle of the pioneering and subversive brand Parachute and its influence on the evolution of fashion in the 1980s and beyond.

From its beginnings inspired by New Wave subculture to its position as an international fashion sensation, the Parachute brand from Montreal was recognized for its visionary, bold apparel and innovative concept stores.

Avant-garde in attitude and design, Parachute brought together high and low, the establishment and the underground. The clothing was defined by androgynous looks, oversized silhouettes, elevated essentials, and graphic references to past and future, from exaggerated trench coats to “space samurai kimonos.” Together with a considered retail presence, which combined an industrial aesthetic in the stores with exuberant photography campaigns, the brand created a vision for street fashion that is keenly relevant today.

Walker explores the history of the brand through hundreds of images, many never published, including personal photography from the founders of the label alongside striking editorial and campaign imagery. A go-to label for stars like Madonna, Peter Gabriel, and David Bowie, Parachute both encapsulated the exuberance of the 1980s and signaled the future in clothing and retail.

Uniquely designed with ephemera layered over photographs as if in the founders’ own scrapbooks, this is a definitive insight into a highly influential cult 1980s brand, and a key reference for fashion historians and designers alike.

The text for this book is in both English and French.

About the Authors:

Alexis Walker is associate curator of dress, fashion, and textiles at the McCord Stewart Museum in Montreal.

Nicola Pelly is one of the co-founders of Parachute.

The history of the quintessential Parisian perfumer Guerlain both influenced and was shaped by Parisian life, savoir-faire, and culture.

The house of Guerlain is a Parisian institution. Guerlain aficionados — from royalty and empresses, to celebrities, writers, and artists — have been featured in novels, song lyrics, movies, and artistic creations, all while exemplifying Parisian savoir-faire and luxury. The Guerlain headquarters and laboratory on the rue de Rivoli in the heart of Paris feature a new scent laboratory and a rose garden, intrinsically binding the famous house to the city of light, which it so perfectly captures in each bottle of perfume.

Travelling through two centuries of history at Guerlain, this book highlights the inextricable links between the house and the city: Guerlain changed Parisian life with its cosmetics and perfumes, yet could have existed nowhere else but in Paris. Guerlain’s creations, especially its perfumes, are put into historical and cultural context through a combination of interviews, images, and portraits of the people and products that played a role in the house’s story. This celebration of Guerlain, the quintessential Parisian perfumer, combines fashion, Parisian life and savoir-faire, history, and the essence of beauty.

About the Author:

Laurence Benaim has written many books including Fashion and Versailles (Flammarion, 2018) and Lancel: Parisian Maison since 1876 (2016). She created the style supplement for Le Monde, contributed to Vogue and Marie-Claire, and is an editorial advisor for Le Figaro.
